MILWAUKEE-- Before the bounce houses, and food trucks by the sign at Veterans Park, there were the Lemmermanns.
"For the prime real estate 6:30-7:00 AM is when it starts to fill up," said Jeff Lemmermann.
The Lemmermanns have spent the last 15 years in the exact same spot at Veterans Park.
"Everyone should come down and try to experience it, at least once," said Kim Fox-Lemmermann, Jeff's wife, "and then you'll be hooked there on out, it's a great time."
Armed with tents, gazebos, a portable grill, and lots of food-- the Lemmermann's section of the park becomes an outdoor living room.
"It's a big pot luck," said Kim.
Just one of thousands of families who enjoy the Lakefront fireworks show each year.
"We wouldn't trade the day for anything, it's our favorite holiday," said Jeff.
A holiday weekend tradition they'll continue for years to come.
"15 years strong and we're going to keep on going," said Kim.

Letter-writer S. Cunningham suggests this photograph demonstrates that gates and fences do little to protect people.

The submitted photo (above) demonstrates the futility of erecting gates and fences to protect the public on White Rock beach.
On a daily basis you can see people standing on the tracks in front of an oncoming train or dashing across the tracks just before the train reaches the point of crossing.
S. Cunningham, Surrey
In the past 45-plus years of going to the beach as a child and adult, Ive realized the more fences, gates and railings they put up, the more people are going to hustle and bustle to achieve access to the beach by the quickest means possible.
When we were kids, there were no barriers, yet a constant warning alarm, a ringing bell on the trains and drop-down barriers at crossings.
When there was not this convoluted rat maze of impediment of barrings, the majority 98 per cent of people getting hit by the trains were the drunk, drugged, the unaware. Less is more.

'Rehabilitation robots' are being trialled at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University The machines, developed by MIT, work by supporting a patients arm and letting them move it between targets on a computer screen Patients receive as much help as they need form the robot to build up their strength and improve their coordination Stroke victims report seeing improvements with just a few sessions

Robots are helping stroke victims to regain the use of their arms.
The machines work by supporting a patients arm and letting them move it between targets on a computer screen, to build up their strength and improve their coordination.
Rehabilitation robots, which have been seen in a number of studies are being taken more and more seriously, with a major trial underway at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Newcastle University.
The stroke patient sits at a table facing a computer screen and places their arm on to the robotic device.
A therapist then asks the patient to undertake some arm exercises, such as moving between targets on the computer screen.
If the person is unable to move their arm, then the robot moves the patient's limb for them.

With the Internet of Things (IoT) revolution underway, consumers want the ability to control devices in an automated and easy manner. The home automation market has also received a fillip recently, thanks to efforts from some high-profile vendors. Ubiquiti Networks is tackling the IoT market from the enterprise / SMB side. Due to the nature of that market segment, Ubiquiti's building automation product line (mFi) is loaded with features, and is quite flexible too. We had reviewed the mFi mPower and found it to actually present great value for the money despite being targeted towards business users.
Today, Ubiquiti is launching a couple of additions to the mFi family. The mFi-MPW is similar to the mFi mPower in terms of providing electrical outlets with remote switching (over Wi-Fi) and energy monitoring capabilities. The only difference is its in-wall design which allows users to replace the existing wall outlets while gaining automation aspects. The industrial design allows for blending of the device into the current setting (no odd protruding contraptions out of the wall / loose power strip hanging off the outlet). The mFi-MPW comes in black, with a white colored option (mFi-MPW-W) also in the mix.
The second device provides new functionality by acting as a switch / dimmer. Unlike traditional switches, the mFi-LD and mFi-LD-W come with touch panels. Toggling the lights is achieved by tapping while dimming control is provided by sliding the fingers on it (similar to a mouse pad). Obviously, the device can be controlled via Wi-Fi and energy monitoring is available. More details about the switch / dimmer can be found here.
While basic control and monitoring can be achieved via the web-interface, the usage of the mFi Controller Software allows for setting up scenes and other home automation aspects. SSH access is available (similar to what power users have enjoyed with the other mFi devices), opening up a host of possibilites for developers of home automation integration systems. In terms of hardware installation, many home users might prefer the services of a licensed electrician for installation (but, this is quite similar to what one had to do for the Belkin WeMo Light Switch, a play aimed purely at the residential market). The other issue is that all the Wi-Fi circuitry takes up some space, and the outlet is actually 1.6" deep (which might be too big for some gang boxes).
Retail availability is still a bit of a hit-and-miss, as Ubiquiti tends to operate through a distributor network. However, on the basis of my previous experience, I believe we should be able to grab these on Amazon pretty soon.
