Major Sewer Project Planned In Old Lyme

    - July 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

OLD LYME The town and its beach communities are close to an agreement on a major project that would install sewers for the town's thousands of summer homes.

Small lots in each beach community are packed densely along the Long Island Sound shoreline, and most have inadequate septic systems.

Plans call for each of the town's beach communities to build its own sewer network, and the town would provide the main sewer line that would travel generally along Route 156 to East Lyme, said First Selectwoman Bonnie Reemsnyder.

From there, the line would link to existing lines in East Lyme and Waterford, and then to the regional sewage treatment plant in New London. Town officials have been told by the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection that the New London facility can likely handle the additional sewage from Old Lyme.

"Each beach community would have their own project going within their association, and they would tie in to that main trunk line," Reemsnyder said. "This is a real collaboration between a lot of entities to accomplish resolving a lot of issues."

Old Lyme has five chartered beach communities that operate as independent taxing districts within the town. A few more beach communities, in addition to the five chartered associations, operate more like homeowners' associations and fall under the jurisdiction of the town's water pollution control authority.

Engineers are still working on cost estimates, but the project is expected to cost "tens of millions" to accomplish, Reemsnyder said. Engineers for the town and the beach communities are also working on construction timetable estimates that would lay out how to approach the project.

"It's a major undertaking," she said. "We're going to make this as painless as possible but with a project like this there will be some pain involved. Hopefully working together we can make it more cost efficient."

Old Lyme like many shoreline towns has a "sewer avoidance" ordinance that requires homeowners to have their septic systems maintained frequently. The sewer avoidance practice is common on the shoreline as small seasonal homes are only used sparingly throughout the year.

But Reemsnyder said since that ordinance was passed in the 1990s, the town has revisited the issue and has decided to pursue sewer lines so it can better handle wastewater management in the environmentally-sensitive shoreline area.

When a bear departs on its own, 'It's safer for the bear and safer for the people,' Easton police captain says

    - July 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A particularly curious bear scaled Easton's College Hill this morning, ambling across porches and yards before retreating into the woods.

The adult black bear made its way along Hillside Avenue and nearby streets, before heading into the woods and down the other side of the ridge that separates the city from suburbs, anEaston police captain reports.

The bear's journey would eventually take it to Forks Township Community Park and beyond before it left humans behind for the day.

Capt. Scott Casterline was one of five Easton police officers who responded about 8 a.m. to find the large bear checking out the homes in the exclusive neighborhood, including one where former Easton Mayor Tom Goldsmith once lived.

The goal, Casterline said, was to limit human interaction with the bear, which was made particularly difficult when the animal walked onto several porches and got near the front doors.

Police had Northampton County dispatchers calling residents of the street and nearby terraces, warning them to stay inside, Casterline said. People who were walking nearby or working in their yards stayed away from the bear, which showed little interest in them, Casterline said.

"The bear seemed very bold and comfortable" around people's homes, Casterline said. "Our concern was that people would open their doors and startle the bear."

Police were also worried that people, not realizing the danger, would let out their dogs, which often become excited indoors with a bear nearby.

"It was one of the larger bears we've encountered," Casterline said.

Each year, the Pennsylvania Game Commission sends city police a pamphlet advising authorities what to do when a bear enters a neighborhood, Casterline said. It is distributed to all officers, he said.

New churches to rise from ashes in Morrow County

    - July 4, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

More Religion stories More Religion Stories By JoAnne Viviano The Columbus Dispatch Thursday July 3, 2014 2:05 PM

While two church communities in Morrow County continue to recover from the sting of losing their buildings to fire last fall, both are looking forward with hope as they forge ahead with rebuilding efforts.

Gethsemane Baptist Church in Marengo is preparing to raze whats left of the burned-out structure and begin rebuilding in August, with the hope that a new church will be ready by the new year.

Meanwhile, Sacred Hearts Parish, a Catholic church about 10 miles away, is almost halfway to a $1 million fundraising goal about a month after kicking off a capital campaign.

Sacred Hearts member Andy Ware said people are still suffering from the Thanksgiving Day destruction of a building that held memories and many irreplaceable items, including a wood altar crafted by the father of a parishioner.

Thankfully, folks are channeling that into praying hard, he said. That we were able to raise the amount we have so far is remarkable for our small country church. Were confident we can keep moving forward.

Since the June 8 campaign kickoff, $427,000 has been raised for a building that will look more like a traditional Catholic church than the previous structure dating to 1973, Ware said.

The new 242-seat church and attached parish hall is expected to cost about $2.3 million, to be funded by the donations along with about $1.2 million from insurance money and $100,000 in parish reserves.

We want to put together a facility and a church that glorifies God but will last for the parish for generations, Ware said. We think building a proper church reflecting modest but traditional values would certainly be a boost to the parish and give us the ability to engage more with the community.

Sacred Hearts, with about 200 members, is the only Catholic church in the county. It continues to hold weekend services at the closed Cardington Lincoln Intermediate School.
