    Palm Beach fences block oceanway

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PROPERTY boundaries stretching out onto the sand will stop an oceanway from ever being built at Palm Beach according to local councillor Daphne McDonald.

Cr McDonald made the comment after it became clear that several homeowners on exclusive Jefferson Lane had fenced off parts of Palm Beach because their property extended beyond the high-water mark and onto what people thought was a public beach.

OPINION: PETTY LINE IN THE SAND

NEWS: PALM BEACH RESIDENTS CLAIM THE SAND FOR THEMSELVES

This week Cr McDonald said one of the downsides to the situation was the fact that council could not build a boardwalk along Palm Beach for the general public to enjoy.

We would have to put it in front of the private land and that would place it too close to the ocean, she said.

If it was there, it would soon be washed away and council would be criticised for wasting public funds.

A string of blocks on Jefferson Lane, many of which are home to prestige properties, have fences and gates around the section of beach in front to stop the general public from accessing the area.

Krauthammer: If Fences Dont Work, Why Is There One Around the White House?

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer detects some hypocrisy in President Barack Obamas reluctance to build a fence along the entire border between the United States and Mexico. After all, he asked on The OReilly Factor Tuesday night, If fences dont work, why is there one around the White House?

Krauthammer argued that if America could fully secure its border, then the American people would be far more willing to legalize the 11 million undocumented immigrants who are currently living in this country.

But how would Krauthammer secure the border, OReilly asked. You start with a fence, he replied.

People say, Oh, fences dont work, you make a ladder. Well, then you build two fences, triple-strand fences, Krauthammer continued, stopping short of a Herman Cain-style electrified fence with a moat full of alligators.

If fences dont work, why is there one around the White House? he asked. If they dont work, why is it that the Israeli fence, which separates Israel from the West Bank, has cut down terror attacks within Israel by 99%. Fences work.

Krauthammer admitted that its not entirely practical or even possible to build a fence that covers all 1,989 miles of the U.S. border with Mexico, but said we should be covering as much of it as we possibly can.

    Mayor: Hands off Palm Beach

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

MY BEACH: Some property owners at Palm Beach have put up fences on the sand to where their boundary stretches. Picture: David Clark Source: News Corp Australia

GOLD Coast Mayor Tom Tate is determined to knock down the fences erected on Palm Beach by residents marking out the boundaries of their prestige oceanfront properties.

Yesterday Cr Tate described the fences, put up by some of the citys richest residents, as ad hoc.

Safety is the main issue for me, he said.

OPINION: FENCING OFF BEACH PLAIN WRONG

    MORE GOLD COAST NEWS

If a (Cyclone) Oswald visited again and knocked out those fences, it would be unsafe. (The debris) could take out property and people.

Cr Tate said that the fences would have be removed anyway after new State Government legislation was passed this year guaranteeing beach access.

Those fences are going to be classed as illegal and they will have to come down, Cr Tate said.

Man gets three years in prison for casting a single vote

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    HOUSTON --

His sentencing in a Montgomery County court capped a four-year journey that began with Heath's plan to bring more oversight to a special utility district and ended with Heath a convicted felon.

Heath's interest was in The Woodlands Road Utility District, a 2,400-acre taxing body that weaves through the suburb. The district was collecting taxes to pay off bond debt and Heath wanted a say. He argued that even though his home wasn't exactly in the district -- few residences were -- it imposed taxes indirectly on him because he did much of his shopping and dining there.

"We learned there was an election pending," Heath said. "Three seats open. So we said, 'Why don't we just get some people to run for those seats?'"

In May 2010, Heath, along with a handful of his neighbors booked rooms at a Residence Inn inside the Road Utility District.

Heath and his friends claimed residency inside the district despite staying only one or two nights at the hotel. They did so to elect three of their colleagues and take over the district.

Heath's argument was the way he read Texas' voting law, which defines "residence" as a place "to which one intends to return after any temporary absence" and leaves "intent" of residency up to the voter.

Heath's friends won the election, but their victory was short-lived. The district's incumbents soon got their seats back after a judge overturned the election.

And then Attorney General Greg Abbott, now running for Texas governor, charged Heath and his friends with illegal voting, a third-degree felony charge.

The Attorney General's Office contends that they intentionally changed their addresses and claimed false residency for political gain, with no real intention of living in a hotel.

Flood repairs almost done at Hillsborough County Center

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TAMPA Repairs are nearly finished on flooded sections of the Frederick B. Karl County Center, where a gasket joining two water pipes blew out on Fathers Day.

County workers were replacing drywall this week in Commissioner Mark Sharpes office on the north side of the building where the flooding occurred overnight June 15. Sharpe is out of the office on vacation but will be able to move back into his second-floor headquarters next week.

Sobiks Subs, a favorite lunchtime spot for county workers and visitors on the first floor, reopened last week.

The flooding occurred when a gasket on the fire suppression sprinkler system burst on the third floor of the 28-story building at 601 E. Kennedy Blvd. The county had to open up the walls in Sharpes office to fix the pipes.

In addition to Sharpes office and the cafe, there was some damage to Commissioner Al Higginbothams outer office, also on the second floor.

The County Center was closed for a day, but employees continued to answer central phone numbers as well as emails.

The fire suppression system underwent a five-year inspection in April by Piper Fire Protection. A number of gaskets were replaced during that inspection, said Joshua Bellotti, interim director of Real Estate and Facilities Services.

That includes removing some of the valves to inspect them and when they do, they replace the gaskets, Bellotti said. A lot of gaskets were replaced.

But one of the gaskets replaced in April failed on Memorial Day causing a leak, though without the extensive flooding that happened several weeks later.

Bellotti said it hasnt been determined whether the leaks were caused by faulty gaskets or bad workmanship during the installation.

    Paving Business Banned From Kansas

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

TOPEKA, Kan. A door-to-door paving company has been banned from doing business in Kansas and ordered to refund three customers.

The business operated under a variety of names including All Star Asphalt, All Star Paving, Asphalt Solutions and All Star Asphalt Paving. According to the Kansas Attorney General's Office, the business violated the state's Consumer Protection Act by failing to provide customers with a completed receipt, failing to advise of their three day right to cancel and cashing checks in less than five business days.

George and James Swartz were ordered to repay $8,500 to a Lawrence resident and two Topeka residents for the violations, and banned from doing business in the state.

With the summer construction season in full swing, consumers should be on the lookout for these fly-by-night operations looking to make a quick buck, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said. Consumers who are in need of driveway repairs should seek out local, reputable contractors and get multiple written estimates before having any work done.

Organizations Join Forces To Build Lovettsville Home For Wounded Vet

    - July 3, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Close to 100 people gathered near Lovettsville Wednesday morning to witness U.S. Marine Corps Corporal Ronny Porta in breaking ground at the future site of his custom home provided by the Building for Americas Bravest program.

While serving in Iraq in May 2007, two years after enlisting in the Marine Corps, Porta, 27, sustained major injuries when his vehicle was hit by an IED. He lost his right arm and two fingers on his left hand. Severe burns covered 35 percent of his body.

Through the program, a joint initiative of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers and the Gary Sinise foundations, Porta and his family will receive a brand new Smart Home equipped with the most advanced technology designed to help him live independently.

The energy efficient home comes completely furnished and will be tailored to fit Portas individual needs. Every room will have fully accessible features, such as movable countertops and cabinetry that can be electronically operated by an iPad or smartphone.

The house will be just under 3,000 square feet. Construction costs alone may reach the half a million range.

John Hodge, vice president of operations for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, said the builders go the extra mile to design the homes that do not look as if a disabled person lives there.

Several people involved with the project participated in the groundbreaking ceremony, which also was attended by State Sen. Dick Black (R-13) and Del. Dave LaRock (R-33).

On behalf of the state of Virginia, and as a member of the Marine Corps League myself, Id like to thank [Ronny] for everything hes done for us, Black said. This was his sacrifice and Im really pleased that people can give back.

Actor and foundation founder Gary Sinise was not able to attend but sent a message for Porta that Hodge read aloud. It is the Gary Sinise Foundations true privilege to help Ronny reclaim his independence and freedom, the very things that he fought to protect for us. I only wish I could be there today to thank you personally Ronny. It is our hope that his home represents in some small way the sincere gratitude that we feel.

An elated Porta, who has undergone more than 100 surgeries, thanked the crowd and shared his story of struggling to adapt to life after the incident.
