KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Demolition of nine buildings that were part of the state's Lakeshore Mental Health Institute campus in Knoxville is slated to begin July 7.

A spokesperson for the City of Knoxville says crews from NEO Corp. will raze nine surplus buildings over the course of the next nine months.

As part of the project, the city will begin renovating the historic Lakeshore Administration Building. The project will cost $1.1 million and restore 14-thousand square feet of space.

All combined, the city is expected to spend about $5.2 million this year on infrastructure, demolition and other improvements at Lakeshore Park.

A spokesperson says Knoxville hopes demolition will remove unsafe buildings often used by vagrants and trespassers as well as bring aesthetic improvements to the park.

Five former state-owned buildings will remain at Lakeshore Park: Two cottages, the Administration Building, the chapel and a central services warehouse.

To be razed, in this order, will be the upholstery building, smoke stack, laundry building, Waterside Building, Department of Health Building, Chota Building, Village Mall, Baker Building, Keller Building, and the boilerhouse.

This is a huge step in transitioning the park to be an even greater community asset, said David Brace, the Citys Public Service Director, whose crews maintain City park properties.

The long drought of home construction is finally breaking.

Contractors built nearly 5,000 homes in the nine-county metro area last year, up 20 percent and the highest levels since the housing bust of 2007, according to the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis. And through the first four months of 2014, construction is up 4 percent from last year.

Buyer tastes have changed since the drought set in. Heres a rundown of whats hot and whats not in custom-home construction, defined by BAGI as priced above $425,000.

Kitchen nooks

Nooks are replacing what for decades had been a mainstay in scores of higher-end homesthe dining room.

Whats different now is the increasing use of open spaces in which a kitchen and nook, still big enough to fit a table into, are

connected and essentially one big area without a wall to differentiate a traditional dining room.

One of the main reasons for the change to nooks: Younger homebuyers arent interested in purchasing expensive dining room sets, said Joe Garcia, owner of G&G Custom Homes Inc. in Westfield.

Why put that 15-foot-by-15-foot room in there when you dont have the fancy furniture that you might only use twice a year, he said.

Garcia was one of five custom builders featured earlier this month at BAGIs Home-A-Rama in Westfield.

This is the mother of all hacks, the genius device that saved the Apollo XIII crew from dying in their emergency return to Earth, as photographed during that trip using one of their Hasselblad cameras. Here are the actual step-by-step instructions that helped turn this mission into NASA's most successful failure ever.

After Mission Control decided to cancel Apollo XIII's moon landing following an explosion of an oxygen tank in the Service Module, the astronauts moved to the Lunar Module in order to save power that was going to be needed later for re-entry.

The only problem with this plan was that the Lunar Module was designed for only two people for a 36-hour period, not three astronauts for 96 hours. They quickly discovered that carbon dioxide was building up fast, putting their lives in extreme danger. They had to change the circular CO2 scrubbers in the Lunar Module for clean ones, but they only had spare square CO2 scrubbers from the Command Module.

In record time, the Crew Systems Division put together an improvised adapter using all sort of weird and random parts, like a flight manual cover, suit parts, and socks. CAPCOM (Capsule Communicator) transmitted the instructions to the astronauts in order to assemble this "mailbox" rigas they called itworking against the clock and trying to surive fight the effects of the poisonous gas which was quickly asphyxiating their brains.

This procedure, which takes approximately one hour to complete, will allow the fitting of a square Odyssey Command Module (CM) scrubber filter through the Aquarius Lunar Module's (LM) round mounted filtration hole and will modify the Environmental Systems scrubber unit. The material is for astronauts to use when CO2 scrubbers fail in the CM, all CM filters are used or in other situations where additional scrubbing of CO2 is required. Crew Systems Division assembled and tested this information.

All required equipment is contained onboard within the Apollo 13 CM and LM.
