ARCHITECTS who redesigned Crown Casinos eating area to design Mount Buffalo chalet's $7.5 million revamp.

Mount Buffalo Chalet is set to undergo major changes with two Melbourne firms given the task of revamping the historic accommodation house. The chalet has been closed since 2007.

ARCHITECTS who redesigned Crown Casinos eating area and steered university projects will design a $7.5million revamp of the Mount Buffalo Chalet.

MGS Architects will combine with a fellow Melbourne company, project manager Accuraco, to bring the grand old building back to life, Victorian Environment Minister Ryan Smith announced yesterday.

MGS has worked on the Crown foodcourt, the redevelopment of Bendigo library and masterplans for Monash and Victoria universities.

Accuraco has been involved in managing works at Melbourne Zoo and the Shrine of Remembrance.

The member for Benalla, Bill Sykes, backed the involvement of two well-credentialled companies.

Dr Sykes said he expected well-priced expert North East subcontractors to win work on the mountain.

He also expected the bulk of work to begin in spring with the project not expected to be completed for up to two years.

Approval has been given to demolishing basic accommodation, a staff recreation hall and a woodshed, while the facade, ballroom, dining room, main lounge and billiard room will be restored.

The Blairs Urban Redevelopment in Silver Spring will begin a 20-year transformation late this summer with the demolition of four mid-rise buildings constructed in 1959.

The redevelopment consists of about 450,000 square feet for retail and commercial space and 3.4 million square feet for residential living.

Twenty percent of the area for the project bounded by Colesville Road, East-West Highway, Blair Mill Road and Eastern Avenue is set aside for public space and urban parks.

On June 10, The Tower Companies and the Abramson family presented new renderings and talked about the future of the Blairs community.

We certainly have our own community on our own grounds, but at the same time, we are going to have an open green space, we are going to have dog parks and we will allow the community [non-Blairs residents] to come in and hopefully have community events, said Gary Abramson, a partner at The Tower Companies and son of the original developer, Albert Sonny Abramson.
