Border Demolition fined for night demolition work in Downtown El Paso (update)

    - June 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Demolition of a building at San Antonio and Mesa in Downtown is underway. It's one of five buildings River Oaks Properties is demolishing on a Downtown block for possible future development. Preservationists had tried to get the city to stop the demolitions because they said the buildings are historically important for El Paso. ( Rudy GutierrezEl Paso Times)

Border Demolition & Environmental Inc., the company hired by River Oaks Properties to demolish five Downtown buildings, was ordered to pay $1,700 by the city for violating its demolition permits, city officials said.

Demolition began Tuesday night on a building at the corner of San Antonio and Mesa, one of five buildings River Oaks is demolishing on a Downtown block for possible future development.

Border Demolition's city-issued permits require demolition work be done between 6 a.m.-10 p.m. But the city received video evidence that demolition went beyond 10 p.m., Tuesday, Javier Camacho, a spokesman for the city Development Department said Thursday.

Mathew McElroy, director of the city Development Department, said Friday that initial information that River Oaks was fined was wrong. And the money Border Demolition has to pay is not technically a fine, he said. It's money Border must pay for city costs associated with the permit violation, he said.

Border Demolition officials have indicated the company will comply with all demolition permit requirements, McElroy said.

River Oaks officials did not respond Thursday to requests for comments.

A building at 109 S. Mesa has been torn down, and demolition continued Thursday on the adjacent building at 218 E. San Antonio. Three other adjacent buildings on San Antonio remained standing Thursday.

Meanwhile, historic building preservationists have turned their attention from fighting the River Oaks' demolitions to trying to get City Council to declare a moratorium on future demolition of Downtown buildings until a preservation plan can be put together.

"Ideally we would like a moratorium on the demolition of buildings over 100 years old Downtown until the city can appoint an independent commission" of experts who could review the city's Downtown historic district boundaries and buildings outside that district and devise a preservation plan, said Max Grossman, vice chairman of the El Paso County Historical Commission, a County Commissioners Court appointed body, and an assistant professor of art history at UTEP.

Demolition of Bradleys Murphy terminal to begin

    - June 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

WINDSOR LOCKS The demolition of the old Murphy terminal at Bradley International Airport is scheduled to begin this summer and cost $7.2 million more than originally budgeted, Connecticut Airport Authority Executive Director Kevin Dillon told the authority at Mondays meeting.

It will start in August, and its on an 18-month timeline to complete the demolition, Dillon said. You should start to see sections of the building starting to come down by the end of the year.

The project first will need a few months of site remediation to remove hazardous asbestos and lead, he said. What will add almost $7 million to the project cost is removing recently discovered cancer-causing PCBs in window and door caulking. The project cost will now be $19.6 million, funded by airport revenues.

    Asbestos removal worried family

    - June 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Christchurch community board chairwoman has got into a spat with a demolition company over her concerns about their handling of debris from a house containing asbestos.

Last week Avondale resident Andrea Cummings wrote on her Facebook page that she was shocked to see workers wearing hazardous materials suits and masks loading demolition material into a bin next door to her home.

No-one had told her what was happening and she feared the material contained asbestos, potentially putting her family "only 3 metres away" at risk.

A WorkSafe New Zealand spokesman told The Press it visited the demolition site last week and reviewed a video posted online by Cummings.

"On the basis of the information that we've got, we're satisfied that the work is being undertaken appropriately," he said.

Cummings said the company had tried to bully her into withdrawing her concerns.

She is the chairwoman of the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board, but said her comments were made "as someone who wants to advocate for the community".

The posts were made on her personal Facebook page but were visible to the public.

Pro Tranz Ltd owner Gerard Daldry said the company had not bullied Cummings but wanted her to apologise for making public comments that were "completely not true".

"We've bent over backwards to help her. What she has done is actually quite detrimental to the whole thing."

Back home: St. Augustine in Jeffersonville reopens following renovations

    - June 11, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JEFFERSONVILLE A procession of a few hundred red rose-bearing parishioners followed the Knights of Columbus guard to the front steps of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Jeffersonville Saturday.

With only a ribbon guarding the door, the church members were ready to discover the extensive renovations that had been completed to the circa-1904 structure.

The man who cut the ribbon and was the first inside was 102-year-old St. Augustine member Tom Horn, and the members followed him inside.

Most hadnt seen the interior of the church since renovations began in February.

Broad work to the ceiling of the church was performed, and Masses were held at Sacred Heart Church in Jeffersonville during construction.

The procession launched from the Parish Hall, and the Rev. Anto Peterraj, priest and administrator at St. Augustine, announced that it was a historic day for the church.

We have come together to bless this church by offering within it the sacrifice of Christ, he said. Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.

And with that, about 200 people lined up to proceed to the church building for the Pentecost Mass.

While exiting the building, they were handed roses by Steve and Ann Northam to carry inside the church.

Steve Northam, 70, represents the fifth of seven generations of a family line that has and continues to attend St. Augustine.
