Omaha brothers swinging for the fences

    - June 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Omaha native brothers are making headlines in the baseball world, professionally and at the college level.

Conor and Casey Gillaspie both played baseball at Millard North High School. Now, Conor Gillaspie is having a great season playing third base for the Chicago White Sox. Casey Gillaspie is generating a lot of talk approaching the MLB draft.

The younger Gillaspie granted KETV a recent interview, just wrapping up what could be his final season at Wichita State. As a junior, he finished with a .402 batting average, hit 11 home runs and had a perfect stolen base percentage (8 for 8).

"Looking back at the season, I didn't really look at my numbers, just tried to go out and play the best that I could to help my team win, Gillaspie told KETV.

Wichita State didnt make a regional, but Gillaspies excitement continues. He is nominated for the 2014 Golden Spikes Award and is projected to be a highly touted first baseman in the upcoming Major League draft. The Millard North alumni said hes not picking favorites, he just wants to be picked.

I just want the opportunity to go to the right club thats a good fit for me, said Gillaspie. I know how it works, you never know who's going to pick you, when or where. Whatever will happen's going to happen and I'm looking forward to the opportunity to play professional baseball.

Gillaspie has seen the process before; his older brother Conor Gillaspie, who also played baseball at Millard North, now plays third base for the Chicago White Sox. Monday he had four hits, including three doubles, the first White Sox player to do it since 2012.

Sometimes its weird when I turn on a ball game and see my brother playing, said Gillaspie. It's fun to watch. I still think about the days when we were both in Omaha, hitting in our backyard and stuff. I don't think about him in Chicago, playing for the White Sox.

Conors advice to his younger brother, is the same advice Casey has for kids dreaming of playing in the majors.

Id just tell them to enjoy it, said Gillaspie. Have fun. You never know when your time is up, when you cant play the game anymore.

    Boom in tattoo laser removal

    - June 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Jimmy McManus slides up his shorts and points a laser at his inked thigh to show how he can blast off unwanted tattoos.

The part-time electrician began offering the service at Chapel Tattoo in Melbourne eight months ago to address a byproduct of the global body art boom: tattoo regret. Removing the skin designs has become a roaring trade, with one in seven people expressing misgivings -- some enough to spend thousands of dollars for several searing laser sessions.

Its a painful reminder to choose your tattoos a bit more carefully, McManus, 30, says of the procedure hes just demonstrated on his leg.

Chapel Tattoo isnt the only studio to begin offering to undo its handiwork, entering a new line of business as ultrahigh-powered lasers pioneered by dermatologists make the procedure safer and more bearable. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery estimates its practitioner-members did about 96,000 removal procedures last year, 52 percent more than in 2012.

Tattoo removal is big business, said Andrew Timming, an associate professor at the University of St Andrews school of management in Scotland. Tattoo parlors doubling as removal shops are a brilliant business model because it creates its own demand.

It also drives growth in laser devices. Revenue from sales of aesthetic equipment by publicly traded companies expanded 20 percent annually from 2009 to 2012 and is now worth about $1.25 billion, according to Cutera Inc. (CUTR), a supplier of laser and light-based medical devices from Brisbane, California. Israels Syneron Medical Ltd. (FDG) says its the industry leader, with 28 percent of the global market.

One in five U.S. adults has a tattoo, according to a 2012 online survey of 2,016 Americans by the Harris Poll. Thats up from 16 percent in 2008. Many may end up changing their mind. Thirty-seven percent of people with inked skin regretted it after about 14 years, according to a survey of 580 people in the U.K. published in a letter to the British Journal of Dermatology last December.

Tattoo-regret seems to take about 10 years to set in and, since tattoos were widely popular in the early 2000s and still are today, my suspicion is that we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg, said Will Kirby, a dermatologist and medical director at Dr. Tattoff Inc., which runs a 10-store chain of tattoo-removal centers in the U.S.

Stephanie, who works in Melbournes film industry, expects to pay about A$2,000 ($1,850) for as many as 10 laser sessions to remove an orange-sized tattoo around her navel. The red, yellow and black stylized sun cost her about A$150 17 years ago.

I am happy to spend anything to get rid of it because I have to look at it every day and it makes me cringe, said the 35-year-old, who asked not to be identified by her last name to protect her privacy. I dont really want a tattoo. And I dont have the stomach I had when I was 18.

Area man says he fell victim to a scam, costing him thousands

    - June 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Stanley (WQOW) - A Stanley man has a warning for you. After he said he was recently taken by a scam, a quick sales pitch cost him a $30,000 car and his peace of mind.

Scott Bokath, who says he fell victim to a scam, said, "When they were doing it, my gut was telling me, 'This isn't right.'"

Looking at his poorly paved driveway Bokath knows now, he was swindled. The offer came after a knock on the door.

Bokath said, "They asked if they could do a test panel, I said, 'Ok'. Within five minutes, they had all their equipment here, which I thought was kind of strange, but in the same hedge, they just finished up another job in the area. I then asked them, 'Where was the job? Who's place was it at?' 'Oh, around town.' They wouldn't give me any names."

When the test strip was complete Bokath told the crew from A&S Asphalt Paving Company he didn't like the work and wouldn't be hiring them for the job. They insisted he'd have to pay for the labor that had already been done, $500 worth.

Bokath said that's when A&S made him a deal. They'd repave and seal his driveway, a job they claimed was worth $20,000 in return for a street rod car parked outside. Bokath said he wasn't thinking clearly and agreed.

"Every vehicle that has been in the driveway since, you can see the impression of the tire tracks in the driveway because they put the asphalt right over mud, water puddles, they did no preparation beforehand, they just started pouring."

The Better Business Bureau said scams, like the one Bokath was involved with, come and go like clock work.

Kimberly Hazen, Madisons regional director at the Better Business Bureau, said, "Door to door asphalt pavers are typically a perennial concern for us at the BBB. It's a way of selling that puts the consumer, you know, off balance and you're not ready to talk to somebody at your door, you're not ready for that high pressure sales pitch,"

Bokath said, "As they were doing the work, I was questioning them, on the way they were doing it, and I was not getting any answers, and the only answers I was getting was, 'This is the way we do it.'"
