Amazon ruins await adventurous World Cup visitors

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PARICATUBA, Brazil (AP) If Hollywood were to set a psychological thriller in the Amazon rainforest, the haunting Paricatuba Ruins would be the perfect backdrop.

Massive root structures poke through the foundations of the once-stately neo-classical edifice, across the Rio Negro from the jungle metropolis of Manaus, one of the cities set to host World Cup matches.

Tourists arriving for soccer's premier event are unlikely to stumble upon the ruins. There is virtually no signage pointing toward the site. It can be reached only by boat or by car for those who cross a new bridge spanning the Rio Negro and endure an hour-long ride over bumpy dirt roads.

Those living near Paricatuba, however, hope the jungle enshrouded villa will attract the more adventurous travelers among the 52,000 or so foreigners expected to descend Manaus for the matches featuring the U.S., England, Italy, Switzerland, Croatia, Cameroon, Portugal and Honduras.

Tree trunks braid around crumbling bricks and shards of fancy tile work. Pythons and iguanas make their homes in the carpet of waist-high brush.

It was built in 1898 at the height of the region's rubber boom, which briefly transformed Manaus into one of the richest cities in the world. The sprawling villa was initially intended to house the Italian immigrants who arrived to work in the rubber trade.

The building's decline over the next century mirrored that of Manaus, which after the rubber boom went bust, slipped into a long period of decadence and decay.

After the Italian migration dried up, the villa housed an art school run by French priests. Then it became a penitentiary. Then a leper colony, before simply being abandoned to the tropical elements.

The roof caved in, and the vegetation took over. During mango season, the ground becomes slick with the fruit's rotting pulp. The thud of falling watermelon-sized jackfruits punctuates the eerie silence of the place.

Today, it is open for all who wish to visit. There is no charge to roam the ruins. The cost of a boat or car ride to the spot depends upon the whim of the captain or driver.

    Dundee United

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dundee United are splashing out 50,000 on a new sprinkler system and new pitch at Tannadice.

Work is set to start to make sure the new playing surface will have taken root in time for the new Premiership campaign kicking off in August.

The club has invested a substantial five-figure sum to ensure the players have the best possible surface to play the type of football encouraged by our manager Jackie McNamara, said director Derek Robertson.

A 6000-gallon water tank is also being fitted under the Jerry Kerr Stand to support the system. It utilises rainbird sprinklers around the perimeter of the pitch, as well as throughout the pitch itself.

In total, 26 sprinklers will be installed. The installation comes complete with a roam facility, allowing remote capability for operating the system at all times.

The system replaces conventional watering methods that have been rendered inadequate since Scottish Water reduced the water pressure in the Tannadice area last year.

Away from the playing side of the club after eight years at Tannadice, commercial manager Keith Haggart is leaving.

Keith has made a valuable and lasting contribution to Dundee United in his time with us and leaves with our sincere thanks and best wishes for his new career, added Robertson.

Meanwhile, Paul Reid has been promoted to Head of Commercial Sales. As well as his duties at Tannadice, Paul is well known as an impersonator on the after-dinner circuit and for his work on radio and television shows like Only An Excuse and Soccer AM.

United, meanwhile, have been encouraged by the level of sales of season tickets for next term.

Book on Murray Gleeson sheds light on Fine Cotton comedy

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Unknowing participant: Bold Personality had a role to play in the Fine Cotton affair. Photo: Barry Chapman

Perhaps cross-examination by Murray Gleeson, a legend of the Australian legal system, sheds light on Bill Waterhouses role in the Fine Cotton comedy of errors.

Waterhouse, a betting-ring giant, has been cast by some as an innocent bystander, far too clever to be involved in such a mugs caper.

However, Gleeson unravelled the relevance of ''blinking'', regarding the bookmaker, in Murray Gleeson The Smiler(The Federation Press), by Michael Pelly.

In a legal career spanning 50 years, Gleeson had a ringside seat for the political, legal and social events that shaped Australia as well as the Fine Cotton substitution.

Hardly a punter, Gleeson came into serious racing in 1983 when jockey Bruce Compton and Ernie Smith, stable foreman for champion trainer Tommy Smith, were suspended for six months.

Chief steward John Schreck was on the boil over riding tactics, claiming the favourite was given no chance. Both appealed.

Smith had Michael McHugh, QC, a regular racegoer and AJC member, in his corner and the Australian Jockey Club engaged Gleeson, looking for another heavyweight.

Smith beat the rap but Gleeson obviously impressed, being offered a retainer first claim on his services in any action involving the club.

    Fertilizer on hiatus

    - May 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A worker spreads fertilizer at the Venice Golf and Country Club.

With Saturday the effective seasonal deadline for yard fertilization in Southwest Florida, many homeowners might wonder if the restrictions imposed by local fertilizer ordinances are really necessary.

A recent study by the Charlotte Harbor National Estuary Program should reassure them: By obeying limits on fertilizer use, they've helped make a dramatic improvement in the health of bays, rivers and other waterways critical to our economy and environment.

Lisa Beever, director of the Charlotte Harbor NEP, reported May 21 on a study she conducted on the impact of fertilizer ordinances passed by local governments -- including Sarasota, Charlotte and Lee counties -- since 2007.

The Charlotte Harbor estuarine system makes for a comprehensive and critical study area. It extends from Venice to Bonita Springs on the Gulf, and inland as far north as Winter Haven in Polk County. It covers about 4,500 square miles and includes the Peace, Myakka and Caloosahatchee river basins and coastal waters such as Lemon and Estero bays as well as Charlotte Harbor.

Using data from throughout the system, Beever compared the readings of nitrogen and phosphorus -- two major ingredients in most fertilizers -- in 2005-2006 to those in 2010-2011. The first two-year period came before the adoption of most fertilizer ordinances, and the second came after. Both periods had similar total rainfall.

Between the two time periods, Beever found, on average, a 21 percent reduction of total nitrogen and a 27 percent reduction of total phosphorus.

Given the size of the Charlotte Harbor system and the relatively recent adoption of fertilizer ordinances, Beever told us, the reductions "are significant."

    Ordinances get the credit

Beever credits the reductions almost completely to the ordinances. No major expansion of central sewer systems occurred in the study area between the two time periods, and any storm-water projects to reduce runoff to the water bodies were too few and too dispersed to make much of a difference.
