    Would-be architects, rejoice!

    - June 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Austin Oakley works in the studio spaces at the NewSchool of Architecture and Design downtown.

Architectural students, your time in the trenches may be coming to a quicker end.

A new plan has been endorsed by key industry groups to give students a license to practice architecture when they graduate from college -- not years later after interning at architectural firms.

Architecture grads have to earn a certain number of hours practicing in the field before they can take a state exam and apply for a license.

Architecture students typically study for five years to gain a bachelor or master's degree and then intern for two or three years to gain enough experience to take the exams. Some states have reciprocal agreements to honor each other's licenses. Others require out-of-state licensed architects to take certain exams that deal with design issues specific to their states before they can practice locally.

The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards -- NCARB -- endorsed the fast track to licensing after the National Architectural Accrediting Board, American Institute of Architects and other industry organizations studied the concept.

A task force plans to identify schools interested in participating and start an approval process later this year.

NCARB spokesman Chris Sullivan said the new system would integrate internships with academic work and make it possible for students to take their state architectural licensing exams at graduation.

He said several universities and states already operate this way. NCARB provides guidance to states on the regulation of architectural practice..

"A lot of architecture students want this," he said. "They want to be an architect when they get out of school - it's an expensive degree. This is an idea that groups have considered for a long time but never pursued it. It's a big shift for a conservative organization."

High potential for shopping malls in southwest Bangkok

    - June 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This area focuses on four main types of retail businesses - shopping centres, hypermarkets, community malls and specialty stores.

A shopping centre is a large building consisting of various types of retail businesses conveniently connected by walkways.

A hypermarket is an integrated format that fuses qualities of a department store and a supermarket.

A community mall is new type of format that reflects an adjustment to the changing lifestyles of most consumers who want to shop in a place that has everything near their home.

Retail shop spaces in community malls are rented easily due to the ease of access of customers who only have to drive two to five minutes from their home.

A specialty store is a retail business that sells a specific group of products with many subcategories. These stores will have to stock a lot of supply and the operators will have service expertise in relation to the product.

Surasak Limpa-arayakul, executive director and head of consulting and valuations, said last week that the southwestern outskirts house many residences, encompassing single family homes, townhouses and most recently, many condominiums that have been completed or are under construction.

This area features many work locales, such as manufacturing facilities, so it is densely settled.

The purchasing power of this populace is not as high as in the eastern part of the city, but well-known brands are expanding their presence along with the expansion of the capital, and the public infrastructure and transport network is improving.

These factors are encouraging more and more people to move to the suburbs, distancing themselves from the crowded city. Other economic issues include the high cost of living in the city and the increasingly high cost of gasoline. This has encouraged people to buy goods and services close to their homes.

Loss of childhood home a body blow

The Paradise Homestead was reduced to ashes and rubble by the fire. Photo Christina McDonald

The Paradise Homestead, which had undergone a near $1 million restoration to reopen in 2010, was reduced to ashes and rubble after the fire on May 23 but a firewall saved the bedroom wing from total devastation.

Ms Miller was in Invercargill on the day of the fire and first received an email informing her of a 6am lightning strike which caused a surge of electricity in the homestead's power system, resulting in a shock so violent pictures were jolted off walls.

Power to the house was lost and so, too, was the phone line.

    But that was manageable.

''You learn pretty quickly that if there's lightning strikes you can't be talking on the phone,'' Ms Miller said.

But later, word came that a fire was ripping throughthe 131-year-old category one Heri tage New Zealand-listed homestead.

The property had been bought by new immigrant Hugh Miller in 1949 and remained in the Miller family until his son, David (Marijke's father), died in 1998 and the Paradise Trust was established to run the property.

''I just felt so helpless,''Ms Miller said.

''I knew that there would be no saving it because of the length of time that it takes to actually get anybody up here and being such an old building.''

Fire spread quickly in Pavilion building even as firefighters poured water on the flames

    - June 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

After nearly an hour on scene in Pavilion yesterday, I told a chief things seemed under control and I was heading back home to my yard work.

At that point, the two-story commercial and residential structure at the corner of Ellicott Street Road and West Park Street looked fine. There was a faint whiff of smoke in the air, but no smoke showing and certainly no visible fire.

"You might want to stick around," the chief said.

A firefighter told me a few minutes later as he laid out hose from a tanker truck, "this could get really interesting really fast."

Later the chief would tell me, "see, my worst fears came true."

The origin of the fire was in the crawl space of the attic. An area covered in hard wood, spray-in installation and only 18 inches of space in any direction.

First Assistant Chief Sean Vogt said his crew was poking through the ceiling, trying to find the right access point to the smoldering fire and Le Roy's crew had punched a ventilation hole in the roof, then the fire took on a life of its own.

"If we we could have gotten up there, gotten our hose lines up there, wetted it down, maybe we could have saved a little more of the building, but with it going through the roof, it just flashed over on us too fast," Vogt said. "It was just rough."

    Portsmouth Season Review 2013/2014: January

    - June 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

New recruits but a familiar story.

There wasn't much time to dwell on 2013 as New Year's Day saw Pompey fans travel to a wet and windy Southend-on-Sea to take on Phil Brown's team.

Richie Barker's men took the lead after dominating the first half thanks to a Sonny Bradley strike and there were enough chances created to have the game won by the break. Instead, Southend equalised with Ryan Leonard's speculatives hot taking a huge deflection to beat Trevor Carson.

Pompey continued to play well in the second half with Jed Wallace hitting the crossbar yet again but to the visitors' dismay Leonard won it in stoppage time with an unstoppable strike from range to inflict a cruel defeat on the away side.

Highlights: Southend United 2 Portsmouth 1

The performance gave Portsmouth supporters hope for the future but with the home game with Accrington Stanley called off due to a waterlogged pitch, Richie Barker went about strengthening his squad.

Daniel Alfei was loaned from Swansea and Nicky Shorey was picked up as a free agent having been released by Bristol City along with striker Ryan Taylor. Jake Jervis finally signed after a long wrangle with old side Elazigspor and John Sullivan was allowed to join Cambridge United on loan, with Ryan Bird joining him later in the month.

The new additions, Jervis excepted, would all be included in the side that travelled to Oxford for one of the most boring football matches you will ever have seen. Still, it was another clean sheet for Barker's side which showed more steel than his predecessor's.

Highlights: Oxford United 0 Portsmouth 0

Marcos Painter signed a new contract keeping him at Pompey for another month and the much anticipated signing of Wes Fogden was finally completed in time for the home match with Mansfield Town.
