Rentokil Pest Control to Launch Post-Pest Disinfection Service in South Africa
Madrid city hall has received a surge in calls from residents requesting the collection of contaminated mattresses.
We had to stand guard for two hours over the mattresses when they were in the street, said one resident who suffered a recent infestation. People kept trying to take away the mattresses even though we had labeled them as containing bedbugs, she said.
Madrids public health department has denied that there is a public health problem but admitted that bedbug infestations have been reported in several buildings in Lavapies, one of the capitals more multicultural districts.
A recent report by Madrid City Hall said the prevalence of bedbugs in some parts of the city had reached near epidemic proportions.
There has been a 70 per cent increase in pest control services, said Milagros Fernandez de Lezeta, director of Spains Pest Control Association, who warned that bedbug infestations are very difficult to control and spread very easily.
Bedbugs, which bite humans and suck their blood, were considered virtually extinct in western Europe for at least fifty years. Their reappearance across Spain over the last ten years has been blamed on the increase in mass tourism.
They can occur anywhere, even the most luxurious hotel, said Ms Fernandez de Lezeta. Their presence is not linked to poor sanitary conditions but to the movement of people.
The pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, which attracts more than 100,000 faithful each year, has in recent years had to tackle outbreaks of bedbugs at hostels along the route.

Loose change, wallets and purses, iPads, bicycles and even an SUV have been stolen in a recent rash of residential break-ins plaguing southern Calgary.
In nearly half of those cases 49 of a total of 102 since the beginning of March intruders got in through an unlocked home or garage door, or an unlocked vehicle that contained a house key or garage door opener.
Thats why city police are reminding Calgarians across the city to ensure their vehicles and homes are secure at all times.
One of the possibilities is with the changing of seasons, people are more in and out of their patio doors, in and out of their garages, and out of the routine of making sure everything is locked up, said Insp. Scott Boyd with District 8.
Particularly concerning is that more than 60 per cent of the incidents 65 out of 102 took place at night, when people would likely be home, Boyd said, adding a small percentage of cases involved homeowners encountering or confronting intruders.
These types of incidents happen year-round in communities across the city. But there has been a spike in cases in southern communities, he said.
According to statistics provided by city police, from March 1 to May 30, 2013, District 8 saw a total of 58 residential break-and-enters, of which 20 (34 per cent) involved entry through an unlocked door.
From March 1 to May 30, 2012, there were 73 break-and-enters in District 8. Twenty-one of those cases (29 per cent) involved an intruder getting in via an unlocked door.
In the most recent incident, officers were called to the 12200 block of Canfield Road S.W. in Canyon Meadows shortly after 3:30 a.m. Friday after a culprit broke into a home, stole some keys, and made off in the familys black SUV.
Its believed the suspect found a house key in an unlocked van on the property, which was used to get into the home.

Lock your doors: Police issue warning after rash of break-ins in south Calgary
An undercover sting operation resulted in the arrest of 12 illegal contracting suspects in San Mateo County on Thursday, according to a statewide agency that oversees licensed contractors.
The sting took place at a commercial property in Belmont, and was carried out by the Statewide Investigative Fraud Team, who posed as property owners.
SWIFT members asked suspects to bid on painting, drywall and flooring projects ranging from $1,000 to $14,000, according to Rick Lopes, a spokesman for the California Contractors State License Board.
In California, all home improvement jobs valued at $500 or more must be conducted by a company or person with a CSLB-issued license, Lopes said.
All 12 suspects were cited for contracting without a license, and one, an East Palo Alto man, was also cited by CSLB on an unrelated $5,000 warrant for driving with a suspended license.
In addition, 10 of the 12 suspects were cited on a misdemeanor charge of illegal advertising. Lopes said seven suspects were contacted through ads on craigslist.org, while five were called from business cards and newspaper ads.
The 12 suspects are Dardo Osmar Romano and Dino Joseph Landucci III, both of San Mateo; Edwin Francisco Zavala Valdivia of Sunnyvale; Hugo De Leon-Garcia of Hayward; Rafael Vicente Andrade Villalta, Concepcion Flores and Rossemberg Emmanuelle Hernandez, all of Redwood City; Loni Taaniela Maama and Filino Sokai Masifilo, both of East Palo Alto; Louie Graciano Ortiz of San Jose; Mario Ramirez Reynoso of South San Francisco; and Daniel Aaron Dayton of San Francisco.
The suspects are scheduled to appear in San Mateo Superior Court on July 15 to answer to illegal contracting charges.
CSLB officials encourage consumers to verify that a potential contractor is licensed before hiring them.
