From recycled glass to concrete, countertops get colorful and creative

From recycled glass to concrete, countertops get colorful and creative

The concrete countertops in Eleanor Zuckerman's San Francisco kitchen are hand-crafted works of art.

Custom-designed by Fu-Tun Cheng of the Berkeley, California-based Cheng Concrete, they feature colours like brick, flowing lines and pictures of nautilus shells.

"With concrete there is a lot of room for creativity, to say nothing of colour," says Zuckerman, a retired psychologist. "It gives you flexibility."

Homeowners looking to spice up their kitchens can install a variety of countertops that go beyond the traditional laminate and tile. Today's options include concrete and butcher-block-style wood, and a range of custom-designed colours and shapes. IceStone countertops use recycled glass from broken bottles.

"So many different materials are used in countertops these days," says Tony Izzo, Curtis Lumber's corporate kitchen and bath manager in Albany, New York. Until about 25 years ago, he says, roughly 90 per cent of countertops in U.S. homes were laminate, and the rest tile.

Then DuPont's Corian hit the market, followed by granite and quartz, which are current favourites, he says. Today, just half of countertops are laminate, Izzo says.

The burgeoning interest in alternative countertops is the natural extension of that trend. And they are becoming more affordable.

"Slowly, over the years, the market has really grown," says Mike Heidebrink, president of Cheng Concrete. When the company opened in 2002, it catered mostly to well-heeled dot-commers willing to spend more to bring an artisan's touch to their kitchens.

Where US manufacturing jobs are growing

    - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This is fueling confidence in Chinese consumers

Robert Rennie, Global Head of FX and Commodities Strategy at Westpac Bank, discusses the findings of the bank's latest consumer sentiment survey.

While steadily declining across New York state and the U.S., apparel manufacturing has been able to make inroads in New York City and other smaller cities. Fueled by rising production costs overseas, more small merchants and independent designers are opting to make clothing in communities such as Raleigh, N.C., which boasts a long textile history; and Fort Wayne, Ind., deep in the Rust Belt.

The "Made in USA" apparel movement is part of a larger re-shoring push, as more small to mid-sized U.S. businesses make and export goods as part of their business strategy.

Triggered by changes in wages and energy costs, the difference between China and U.S. in manufacturing costsbefore transportationhas narrowed to less than five points, as recently measured by The Boston Consulting Group in an April report. A decade ago, that gap between the U.S. and China was wider at 14 points.

Exports continue to rise and reached record levels in March this year, according to the U.S. Census.

The U.S. and Mexico are experiencing dramatic shifts in manufacturing, according the consultancy's report. Those countries are gaining in manufacturing, aided by multiple factors including moderate wage growth, energy advantages and stable foreign-exchange rates.

Top exporting economies experiencing manufacturing pressures, according to the report, include China, Brazil and Russia.

On the Market: Circa-1710 Farm with 100 Acres and a Hedge Maze Asks $10.5M

    - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Tuesday, May 27, 2014, by Spencer Peterson

A property listing says it, so it must be true: "some people" say that Twin Silo Farm is "perhaps the most beautiful property in Bucks County. Could those people be interior decorator Andrew Hartnagle andretired investment banker Wayne Stork, who bought the much-added-to circa-1710 stone farmhouse for $4.1M back in 1988, and have since elevated it to the ornately appointed state it's pictured in today? If so, it'd be hard to begrudge them a bit of pride in their baby. Even leaving the residence aside, the 100-acre grounds alone are gorgeous enough to command a $20 price of admission (with all proceeds going to something called Bucks Beautiful Bulbs). To wit, said grounds, which were part of the original William Penn Land Grant, contain a "resort-style heated pool," a "spa," a "privately situated tennis court," a "tranquil pond of more than 2 acres," a "small scale barn," "ample green space for grazing animals," an "entertainment pavilion with reflecting pond," and the pice de rsistance, a "whimsical full-scale hedge maze." An impressive hunk of green, to be sure, but can it earn this estate a $10.5M ask?

The 6,756-square-foot, six-bedroom fieldstone home is named after the two stone silos added on to it back in 1781. Only the "highest quality materials and finishes" have been used therein, and according to the listing, what this amounts to inside is a "cozy English sensibility." But anyway, to the lawn:

Dina Manzo Reveals "Anxiety" About Dating, Getting Naked in New Real Housewives of New Jersey Video

    - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The bitch is back...and on the prowl! After three seasons away from The Real Housewives of New Jersey, former series star Dina Manzo is back with a vengeance in season sixand Us Weekly has an early look at what kind of drama awaits her over the next few months.

    PHOTOS: Former Real Housewives

As seen in this exclusive footage from the Bravo show, Manzo will try her hand at dating following her separation from her husbandin February 2013. The two were married for seven years, so the Project Ladybug founder, 41, has been out of the game for quite some time.

PHOTOS: Before they were Real Housewives

"When I pictured myself 40-something, this was not what I was expecting," she confesses. "The last time I had to get naked in front of a guy, I was 28 years old...There's definitely anxiety around that."

There's also some nervousness around her daughter Lexi's departure for college. (Lexi, 17, is Manzo's child from her first marriage.) "It's the end of an era as a mom," she says. "Now I just have to worry about my f---ed-up pets."

    PHOTOS: Biggest Housewives fights ever

Manzo's RHONJ comeback follows the departure of her estranged sister, Caroline, who left the series after five seasons last October. Announcing her return in previews for upcoming episodes, the interior decorator says cheekily, "The bitch is back, and if you don't like it, you can kiss my ass."

Lansing Facility Announces Expansion, Job Additions

    - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This section displays the last 50 news articles that were published.

It's a small company that's making a big impact. And on Tuesday, Rep. Tom Reed toured Advanced Design Consulting in Lansing. Tamara Lindstrom reports about the facility's upcoming expansion.

LANSING, N.Y. -- Advanced Design and Consulting may have began in a garage in the mid-1990s, but IT has grown to do some pretty big work.

"We design and build scientific instruments for physicists who are trying to figure out why we are here, who the universe was created," said ADC president Alex Deyhim. "They do fundamental research."

On Tuesday, employees showed off their work to Rep. Tom Reed, R-Corning.

"Advanced manufacturing, like you see on display here, is one of the key opportunities for America's future," Reed said. "I'm very excited about the prospects we're hearing in U.S. manufacturing. And when you see it being done right here in Lansing, we can do it across America."

And for ADC, the prospects are about to get better. The company announced another 20,000 square-foot facility expansion.

Deyhim said the new manufacturing, engineering and administrative facility will allow the company to take on larger projects.

"Right now, for example, we have a project for NASA, which we just finished all the design, it's all done, we just released it to manufacturing," Deyhim said. "We're trying to figure out how to assemble and do the testing. Because this whole system is so big, it's going to be a struggle. We're confident we can do it, but space is an issue for us."

The company plans to add at least a dozen new jobs to their roster of 21 employees, and they're grateful to get a little attention from lawmakers.

Hamilton expands popular summer concert series

    - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The RiversEdge Amphitheater is ready for its third season of music festivities, kicking off Thursday with more show dates and more fun planned for the summer.

Former fan favorites Little Texas, 90 Proof Twang and Flawless will return this season along with tribute band Signs of Life, the Revivalists (fronted by Hamiltonian David Shaw), Lieutenant Dans New Legs and the Whiskey Gentry.

Hamilton Director of Resident Services and RiversEdge organizer Adam Helms said that concertgoers should have a blast at every show this season.

Basically, they can expect, if they come out to any of the shows, theyre going to be awesome, Helms said. These are nationally touring bands that are coming in to play in Hamilton.

The openers are more of a local flavor, according to Helms, including the Jim Burns Band and Seven Miles SOHIO. All three of Septembers shows are tribute shows, featuring the music of classic groups like the Beatles, the Eagles and Pink Floyd.

Helms noted new infrastructure additions to the theater, including the tent cover, which was added last September.

We have new lights, and we have our own sound system, which is state of the art, he said. And were going to add another beer booth, because one of the complaints we had last year was that the lines were too long.

Now at three separate beer booths, new beer offerings will include Blue Moon, Summer Shandy, Redds Apple Ale, and Fat Tire to join staples Miller Lite and Coors Light, all for $4. Richards Pizza, Neals BBQ, Slice of Life, and Flubs Ice Cream will provide concertgoers with sustenance.

The city will be offering free parking in the George McDulin Parking Garage on concert nights, Helms said. The garage, located between 3rd Street and Market Street will also serve as the concert venue in case of inclement weather.

The concert series will feature a produce and crafts market this year, with 11 vendors including Rising Phoenix decorative glass and jewelry, Barbaras Atlas Oils, Hamilton Urban Gardens produce, among others.

Reverent Remodel: Asburys new owner respects, yet transforms, the former church

    - May 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A well-preserved felt banner, reading Asbury, Hood River, lies folded on the floor of what was once a Sunday school room of the 100-year-old Methodist Church, left behind 15 months ago when the church closed its doors.

I need to get that back to them, said Claudia von Flotow, the buildings new owner, who began interior demolition in April. No tenants have yet been lined up but von Flotow hopes to rent out the sanctuary and north room spaces as early as this fall.

Changes done in the 1950s are going away, and something that was covered in the 1950s is coming back.

The warren of offices and classrooms will become office and restroom space in the north section, and the old folding room divider, while salvaged, will be replaced with glass walls.

Most importantly, the false ceiling over the office area is gone, exposing the dark wood bead board, a vaulted ceiling that Claudia von Flotow calls stunning.

It needs a little bit of work, but not a whole lot.

She said the building will need more roof insulation and some structural reinforcement.

There are a lot of structural problems but nothing thats not worth saving. There is craftsmanship in every corner of this place. As anyone would say who appreciates craftsmanship and history, you gotta preserve it.

She will install a mezzanine partway over the north room, offering a closer view of the bead board, as well as views of the Columbia River through new north-facing windows.
