    Fort Ticonderoga garden opens Saturday

    - May 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Ticonderoga

The King's Garden at Fort Ticonderoga opens Saturday for the season.

The walled colonial revival garden was originally designed in 1921 by leading landscape architect Marian Coffin. The formal elements a reflecting pool, manicured lawn and hedges, and brick walls and walkways are balanced by annuals and perennials. It features heirloom flowers and modern cultivars to recreate a historic planting scheme.

Outside the nine-foot brick walls of King's Garden, the grounds also feature the Discovery Gardens, including a children's garden, an interactive 18th-century American Garrison Garden, and Three Sisters Garden.

The garden is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily through Oct. 13. The King's Garden is included with the general admission ticket to the historic fort on Lake Champlain.

There are guided tours through the garden offered daily as well other activities for both children and adult visitors.

Fort Ticonderoga is also commemorating Memorial Day by honoring the soldiers of the Revolutionary War. The fort will offer a "Salute to the Soldiers," which will include patriotic and 18th-century music and musket salutes to fallen soldiers, at 11 a.m. Monday. There will also be a musket firing demonstration where visitors can see the challenges of loading and firing the American Revolution-era weapon.

Tickets to the fort are $17.50 for adults, $15 for seniors age 65 and up. Admission for children 5-12 is $8 and children under 4-years-old are free.

Fort Ticonderoga is located at 30 Fort Ti Road, Ticonderoga; for more information, call (518) 585-2821.

Political Landscape: Curry wins backing of Rohrabacher

    - May 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As the June 3 primary nears, candidates for the 74th Assembly District continue to battle for votes.

U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Costa Mesa) endorsed Newport Beach City Councilman Keith Curry for the seat, which represents Newport, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Irvine, Laguna Beach and Laguna Woods.

"Keith and I have worked together so many times and so well in the past, and I am sure we will be working together in the future for the betterment of coastal Orange County," Rohrabacher said in a news release.

Describing Rohrabacher in the release as a "longtime friend and fellow Reagan administration alumni," Curry added that he looked forward to collaborating with him on increasing jobs and growing the economy.

    Local PAC snubs Curry

Stop the Dock Tax, a political action committee affiliated with the Newport Beach Dock Owners Assn., announced that it won't endorse Newport Beach Councilman Keith Curry in his run for the Assembly.

Citing Curry's vote on a dock fee increase and the cost of the new Newport Beach Civic Center, the group said it would donate $2,000 to opponent Emanuel Patrascu.

"Curry's style of big government is bad enough here in Newport we can't afford it in Sacramento," association Chairman Bob McCaffrey wrote in a news release.

McCaffrey said the group, now called Residents for Reform, will focus on electing four fiscally responsible council members this November. Nancy Gardner, Mike Henn and Leslie Daigle are termed out. Mayor Rush Hill is seeking reelection.

Experts warn of long period of haze

    - May 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE: The haze that is expected to hit Singapore in the coming months could go on for as long as three months, experts have warned.

This is similar to what the Republic experienced in 1997, they said.

Prolonged hazy skies could happen if a strong El Nino effect sets in, compounded by the already-started illegal land clearing by farmers in Sumatra.

El Nino is a phenomenon which causes severely dry weather and high temperatures in this region.

According to environmental reports, there were more than 3,000 hotspots in Sumatra at the peak of the haze crisis in March alone.

This compared to about 2,700 in June last year.

The next dry season will occur between June and October, and experts are concerned illegal land clearing in Sumatra will result in large-scale fires.

"If they deliberately set fires to clear land, particularly if it's land being cleared illegally, they are not going to listen to anyone who tells them not to start the fire," said Mr Faizal Parish, Director of Global Environment Centre, a non-governmental organisation based in Malaysia.

"They won't take immediate action to put out the fire. The problem (in Sumatra) is the need for active enforcement on the ground."

Worse, the March fires have not yet been put out completely.

    Saluting Selma's house

    - May 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In 1902, Davenport lumber magnate Lorenzo Schricker built a large yellow brick home on a bluff overlooking Davenport for his daughter Selma.

The Georgian-Federal-Revival-style home wasdesigned by the noted architectural firm of Clausen and Burrows, and it featured a large, semicircular portico and over-sized dormers.

Selma lived in the home at 1430 Clay St. until she died there in September 1931 at the age of 50. She never married and is buried with her sister and half-brother in the first mausoleum built in Davenport's Oakdale Cemetery.

After she died, the home was acquired by the Diocese of Davenport, and four bishops lived in the home over the years. The last resident was Bishop Emeritus William Franklin, who moved out in the mid-1990s.

The home wassoldin 1996 and then again in November 2000 toMark and Judy Westrom.

Over the course of several years, the Westroms did a lot of work, including the replacement of all 39 windows and battling back from a roof fire in November 2010.

For their efforts, they arereceiving a preservation award from the Scott County Historical Society.

The Westroms say the house appears to have undergone various renovations through the years, and in some areasthe original configuration or use is unclear.

The original drawingsare no longer in the archive of SGGM Architects & Interior Designers, the successor to Clausen and Burrows.

Happily, though, original woodwork, stained glass and other architectural elements were preserved, "and we believe the overall flavor of the house remains intact," Judy Westrom said.
