Tesco's 5m revamp for Bidston Moss store

    - May 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Supermarket to get latest 'Decks' family restaurant brand

Supermarket group Tesco is investing 5m in its Bidston Moss store in a facelift that includes its latest family restaurant brand, Decks.

The work will result in a range of new services and platforms for the store and could result in several new jobs on top of the current 450-strong workforce.

Decks is a family dining restaurant serving a range of British food, such as classic roasts, English breakfasts, and freshly baked cakes.

The stores group, headed by Liverpool-born chief executive Philip Clarke, said the Decks concept is about honest, wholesome meals served in a relaxed setting at an affordable price, with all the food freshly made on the premises.

The brand was developed by Tesco as part of its strategy to ensure its large stores are compelling retail destinations making them worth the trip in an era where no one needs to leave their sofa in order to shop.

Decks in the Bidston Moss store will be Tescos sixth development so far.

It has already established the Decks brand in its Coventry, Newport, Broadstairs, Slough and Lincoln stores.

A spokesman said: We have been very pleased with the feedback weve had so far from customers.

He added: In Bidston Moss, the Decks is part of a range of investments we are making to improve the store for local customers.

School, park districts disagree on who should fund pool fix

    - May 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This version corrects an earlier version that said the park district had already spent $14,000 on engineering expenses related to the project. The school district has paid that amount for those expenses.

The Vashon Pool is slated to open next month, but the islands school and park districts are disagreeing about who is financially responsible to remedy the drainage problem there, a situation that could lead to litigation and the pool not opening this season.

We want the pool to open, no question, said school board member Laura Wishik after a special board meeting Monday. But it has to be in a way that does not bind the school district to further costs at the pool.

The school district owns the pool, but the Vashon Park District operates it. This arrangement began four years ago, when King County ceased running the pool as a cost-saving move, and the park district took it on.

In previous years, the pools water drained to the school districts septic system. However, the construction of the new high school changed that, and officials at both districts learned earlier this spring that the pools drainage had been unknowingly cut off last fall during the building process.

Since the discovery of the problem, the school districts Capital Projects Manager Eric Gill has been working with a variety of regulatory agencies to come up with a solution.

Last week, the Department of Ecology (DOE) approved a plan: a pipe that would go between the pool area and an existing drainage pond to the west of the facility. But such a fix is unusual, and the DOE will require considerable monitoring and testing to ensure no effluent travels as far as the wetlands on the districts property near Vashon Youth & Family Services, school district Superintendent Michael Soltman said.

The park district will need to be extremely careful and cooperative in managing the pool to the conditions of this solution, he added.

If discharging the water is managed well, the solution will work, he said, but if potentially harmful waste is detected in the wetlands, additional measures will be needed for the pool to continue to operate. Those measures, Soltman said, include a surge tank, which would meter out the pools waste water, and if problems persist, the installation of an infiltration trench. The engineering firm working with school district estimates those two measures would cost as much as $57,000.

In Mondays school board meeting to discuss the potential solution, the board authorized Soltman to negotiate with the park district to cover 50 percent of the cost of the proposed fix, estimated to be no more than $40,000. This figure includes $14,000 the school district has already spent on engineering expenses related to the project. The school board also laid out several conditions the park district must meet. It will require that the park district pay for any measures that might be needed beyond the proposed solution, that the park district be financially responsible for all the expenses related to hauling waste water from the pool a process it has been relied on to ready this pool this spring and that it adhere to DOEs conditions for the drainage fix and their associated costs. These requirements would be a included in an addendum to the pool lease the park district has with the school district before any construction would begin, school board members said.

    Decor for outdoor rooms

    - May 22, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When it comes to outdoor furnishings, whats in and whats out are not so clear anymore. Thats because the real trend is a growing category of products thats equally at home in a family room as on a patio. What both have in common is comfort both curl-up and visual. And not unlike the glue that holds interior spaces together, accessories are what make outdoor rooms livable and give them personality.

Livability is quite the buzzword. In fact, on retailer websites, outdoor living is the updated header that once included only a few furniture options and now encompasses pillows, poufs, rugs, lighting, lanterns, planters, curtains, dinnerware and even art.

When IKEA U.S. commissioned a report on the home, its conclusion about outdoor living is that it is our new backyard oasis ... an extension of our living room and our kitchen, a place to relax and entertain. On the Pottery Barn website, a mini primer puts forth design ideas.

For areas big and small, everything starts with comfort; extend your hours outdoors by layering in lighting with a mix of lanterns and flameless candles; to effortlessly entertain, have a variety of occasional tables to accommodate food and drink.

After years of separate but equal, the great outdoors and the great indoors have merged into one space. The backyard used to be a stepchild with lawn furniture and not much more than plants or candles, says Elaine Griffin, author of Design Rules: The Insiders Guide to Becoming Your Own Decorator and one of the competing designers on the NBC reality show American Dream Builders at 8 p.m. Sundays on NBC.

The blurred lines between indoors and out have gotten a boost with performance fabrics and materials as well as style. So weatherproof rugs, which most would not have given a second glance to for al fresco use, let alone in prime real estate indoors, are dazzling with color, pattern, style and even an indoor voice when it comes to texture.

    Outdoor living is growing trend

High-end designers such as Emma Gardner now are translating sophisticated rug looks more affordably, as in her recently launched collection for Couristan. And some fanciful designs and hues have even broader appeal such as the new Jupiter polypropylene collection for Loloi, which also is being touted for childrens rooms.

A trending go-to accessory indoors is doubling its appeal outside as well: the small-scale table, which is showing up in all sorts of materials from porcelain to resin and reclaimed steel drums.

Relatively new on the outdoor scene is the pouf, a hybrid that merges ottoman and table, but in a puffy rounded or squared shape. Theres a lightheartedness about it, especially when expressed in vivid geometrics and bright solid weaves. The versatility of a piece that can double as a place to rest ones feet or a tray full of snacks is a big selling point.
