Donatelli Builders, Inc. today announces its team win in the 2014 Chrysalis Awards for Remodeling Excellence competition. In collaboration with kitchen designer Gail Drury, CMKBD, of Drury Design in Glen Ellyn, Ill., and Vicki Ovitt, interior designer of Wheaton, Ill., Donatelli Builders received a regional award in the category of kitchen remodel between $75,000-$100,000.

To win an award in this highly competitive category is quite an achievement, says Ken Kanline, director of the Chrysalis Awards. This is the second consecutive year in which Donatelli Builders has won an award, which demonstrates this teams ongoing commitment to excellence.

The winning project was a modest-sized kitchen remodel in Schaumburg, Ill. The existing kitchen had major space-planning flaws, insufficient storage space, poor construction and lackluster finishes. The function of the space was immensely improved after the remodel. A small one-cook kitchen is now designed as a two-cook kitchen to accommodate this young family of avid cooks. The aesthetic transformation is phenomenal, going from bland to chic contemporary with clean lines and a European influence featuring frameless cabinetry, unique focal points, stunning finishes, and upgraded electrical throughout.

An 89-year-old woman was scammed out of more than $11,000 by an unlicensed contractor who also stole her sink and cabinets, according to Boynton Beach police.

Police said the victim was contacted by Daniel Joseph Kovatch, 45, in February about remodeling her kitchen on Northeast 20th Avenue.

Kovatch started by removing the kitchen sink and cabinets but stopped working after that, and the victim was unable to contact him.

Detectives tried to track Kovatch down at his last known address at an apartment on Renaissance Commons Boulevard but discovered he had moved.

"Kovatch does not have a license to preform kitchen remodeling, electrical or plumbing work in Palm Beach County," according to the release.

Police said he advertises as Kovatch Contracting Service on Yahoo and Angie's List and that his website said he's based in Hilton Head, S. C.

Charges of exploitation of the elderly, scheme to defraud, grand theft and contracting without a license have been filed against him.

Contractors can be verified through the Palm Beach County Contractors Certification Division at 561-233-5530.
