Backlash Continues over Colonial Building Tree Removal

    - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Backlash from the Colonial Building restoration project continues as Former Deputy Mayor Shannie Duff voiced her opinion on VOCM Backtalk with Pete Soucey. Resentment for the project started when the province removed some old mature trees from the property. Duff says if a private citizen wanted to cut down a tree on a historic site, they would have to go under the advice of a city arborist, however, the provincial government does not have to ask the city for permission. Duff says she doesn't know why the province would cut down trees that provided character to the Colonial Building.

She says she was shocked that they cut down those trees because they provide a beautiful canopy in that area.

Ward 1 Councillor Danny Breen also voiced his concerns on the project saying he saw a presentation for the restoration project, but Breen says it didn't go into much detail.

He says it initially looked like a good project but the removal of the trees is an issue he didn't know about.

Rules stump tree fans in La Caada Flintridge

    - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Since La Caada passed its new tree ordinance in March, opponents have been crawling out of the woodwork.

One resident is circulating an online petition to repeal the ordinance, while another wants to look into having the city's "Tree City USA" status revoked by the Arbor Day Foundation, which has granted the title to 3,400 American communities since 1976.

Legally, according to city staff and one Arbor Day Foundation representative, those efforts are not likely to bear fruit, but residents are aiming to keep the issue in front of the public.

"If everybody cut down their trees, La Caada would look like Palmdale," said Larry Moss, the landscape architect who posted the petition to the website change.org. "If the city has to be tougher to protect our trees, then they have to be tougher."

The document has garnered 61 signatures and will be presented to Council when the 100 signature threshold is met, he added.

Petitioners protest that, with the exception of native oaks, sycamores and deodar cedars planted in historic sections of town, homeowners may cut down any and all trees on their properties.

Some want protections to be more expansive, while others want to have more input into construction projects that threaten local tree canopies.

"When you compare our policy to our neighbor Pasadena, there's a considerable gap," resident Cameron Crosby said at a May 5 City Council meeting. "We have three protected species, Pasadena has 126 there is a problem here."

Crosby and his La Forest Drive neighbors petitioned, unsuccessfully, in March to protect large pines on a lot being developed next door. He said La Caada had no right to be considered a "Tree City" if it would allow a homeowner to remove 20 of the lot's 23 trees.

"I don't think we deserve it," he said of the designation. "It ought to be taken away."

New Pflugerville Water Park Opening Delayed

    - May 21, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Updated: Tuesday, May 20 2014, 09:11 PM CDT

The Hawaiian Falls opening in Pflugerville has been delayed until June 6. But the drilling, tile work and just about everything else needed to finish the water park continues.

While crews work round the clock visitors will have to wait a few more weeks to get a sky high view of Pflugerville.

"With all the inclement weather, we are a little bit delayed," says General Manager Evan Barnett.

Construction came to a halt a few times over the last few months. At one point, rain caused a muddy mess -- making it impossible for construction crews to work.

Barnett says, "We had a lot of ice days and the last few rains put us behind, a few days taking us out of the memorial equation."

The good news, the park will be open in time for summer vacation and stay open longer.

"We are super thankful for our season pass holder base and because of that Hawaiian Falls always want to do the right thing and what we plan on doing right now is extending the season on the back end and letting them enjoy the facility past Labor Day weekend," says Barnett

Which gives you a few more weeks to enjoy the attractions.

"We're working around the clock and we want to make sure the number one priority is safety and our customer experience is going to be maintained," says Barnett.

More Hollywood actors set to star in Broadchurch 2

10:40am Wednesday 21st May 2014 in News By Lee Irving

THE creators of BAFTA award winning Broadchurch have announced another four actors and actresses will join the cast ahead of filming for the second series.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste, James DArcy, Eve Myles and Phoebe Waller-Bridge will join the cast of multi-award winning Broadchurch for the new series, broadcaster ITV, and production companies Kudos and Imaginary Friends confirmed today.

Academy Award, BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated Marianne, who trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, will play a leading role in the new series.

Acclaimed for her television and film roles including Without A Trace, Private Practice and The Murder of Stephen Lawrence, Marianne will begin filming for the new series shortly.

Bridport-based writer Chris Chibnall said: "We're over the moon to have wooed Marianne back from Los Angeles to join us in Broadchurch.

Marianne is one of Britain's finest actresses, so it's an honour and a coup for us. Its a role written specifically for her and I would've wept for months if she'd turned us down.

"Luckily she didn't and her character is going to make an indelible impact on the world of Broadchurch."

Also joining the cast in a key role is acclaimed film and television actor James DArcy, who is known for his roles in Cloud Atlas, Hitchcock and The Making of a Lady.
