Near the shore of Lake Ontario lies a mystery. Twenty massive limestone sculptures vanished from public view without a city noticing.
The sculptures, which weigh as much as six tonnes, havent moved in decades but now a fence enclosing a three-acre patio at the exclusive Muzik nightclub, which has hosted the likes of Justin Bieber and Mayor Rob Ford, blocks them from view.
Its outrageous. My dad would be turning over in his grave, said Kathy Sutton, daughter of the late Toronto artist, E.B. Cox, who created the sculptures. Initially, 17 sculptures were trapped, but after the nightclubs patio expanded last year all became fenced in.
But just how the fence went up around them is not clear. City staff in charge of public art say they were never consulted. There are no applications for a patio at Muzik on file with Municipal Licensing and Standards, which would have triggered a public process.
Now family and friends of the artist have taken notice. E.B. Cox envisioned his pieces, known as the Garden of the Greek Gods, to be a source of joy for children, not clubgoers and celebrities, they say.
He loved the fact that kids could climb on his art because its pretty much indestructible. Hed never like the idea of someone using it for an ashtray, Sutton said.
Its scandalous that a nightclub can just put its arms around these public works of art.
What the family wants is simple, said her sister Sally Fogel: The gods in a proper garden, not a beer garden.
Coxs work can be found across the GTA, including outside Victoria College, the Park Hyatt Hotel, McMaster University and a school in Milton.
Before his death in 2003, Cox hung around with author Farley Mowat and members of the Group of Seven, even carving the epitaphs for their granite tombstones. His own memorial service was held at the foot of Hercules. It now stands three metres tall amid patio tables.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Aujia Hines had little interest last year in going to college and only vague ideas about her future career, and she disliked talking in front of other students.
But the 15-year-old said a pilot college and career coaching program at Southside Technical Center made her realize that she wanted to be an electrician and go to college.
I didnt know that so many apprenticeship opportunities were available, Hines said. Now I understand all that college has to offer and all that can come of having a college degree.
Through the pilot program from the Northern Kentucky-based company NaviGo, Hines also learned how to coach other students in reaching their career and college goals.
Fayette County is the first school district in Kentucky to test the program, which works somewhat differently at each of the five high schools where it is being piloted: Southside, Bryan Station, the STEAM Academy, Carter G. Woodson Academy, and the School for the Creative and Performing Arts.
In general, the NaviGo program presents a shift from practices in which career and college planning might be confined to a students conversations with guidance counselors.
The NaviGo curriculum shows teachers and students how to be career and college coaches, to lay out a plan so students discover their own interests, their passions, their talents, said company founder Tim Hanner, a retired Kenton County school superintendent and a former Kentucky associate commissioner of education.
In addition to providing the pilot program in Fayette County schools, the company has a division for families that hire NaviGo coaches to help students prepare for life after high school.
High school should be as much about students figuring out what they want to do in life as what they dont want to do, Hanner said.
A key component of the Fayette pilot program is that NaviGo staff members train teachers to coach students as they work on their Individual Learning Plan, or ILP. The ILP is an online planning tool that the state requires, starting in sixth grade, so students have a central place to document their academic achievements, standardized test scores, extracurricular experiences, and career and college exploration.

Newmanstown >> A longtime Newmanstown landmark is slated for demolition, and the Millcreek Township supervisors couldn't be happier.
Demolition will begin next week on the former East End Pub.
The pub, for several years a popular bar and dining establishment, had fallen on hard times and was eventually abandoned. Local businessman Jack Keener bought the property with plans to tear it down and build townhouses in its stead. That was more than a year ago.
Because of the building's precarious condition and its location in the center of town along Main Street, the supervisors wanted the pub razed before anyone got hurt from falling bricks or lumber.
"It is in such disarray," said township Chairman Donald Leibig. "At the back part of the pub, where the dining area had been, the roof had collapsed some time ago. We were concerned about someone getting hurt, and the township's liability."
Leibig said he and township solicitor John Enck had toured the building about three years ago to check the condition then, and were appalled at what they found.
At the time, the pub had a few second-floor residents who were renting rooms. The stairs to the second floor were cracked and dilapidated and barely negotiable, Leibig said. In the attic, large sheets of plastic covered the floor, which was covered in buckets to collect rainwater, Leibig recalled.
No one currently lives in the building.
