Chico >> The Chico City Council will be presented with three options Tuesday on how to address mold and water intrusion at Fire Station 5, with costs ranging from $150,000 to $300,000.
In November, the council allocated $25,000 for investigation and mold remediation, the extent of which was larger than originally anticipated and led to additional work and costs, including identification of leaks, interior destructive testing, cavity testing, additional remediation and the need for major repairs, Public Works Director Ruben Martinez reports. The recommended repairs should address some or all of the causes of water intrusion, depending on which option the council decides.
Fire Station 5 has experienced water infiltration since the facility was built in 1997 because the construction design included a freestanding brick veneer that needed to drain moisture buildup away from its surface to weep holes, causing recurring water leaks, Martinez reports.
"The recent remediation and test work indicates a need to repair some, now-well-known, rudimentary construction problems," his staff report states.
The roof is likely at the end of its useful life but may not be currently contributing to the leaks, and the contractors are willing to put a 15-year warranty on the restored roof. The roof flashing is contributing to the leaks, as is the weep system to release moisture from behind the brick veneer, and the windows will continue to leak due to the weep system and poor detailing.
If cause of the water infiltration to the interior including the roof are not corrected before the interior repairs, the mold will return if the affected areas become saturated again, the staff report states.
The first option for repair which is what is recommended by Public Works Director Ruben Martinez is to authorize $70,000 for restoration of the roof, restoration of the interior and restoration of critical brick veneer, and to direct staff to return to council with a supplemental appropriation for next year as needed. The total cost would be $220,000, after using $150,000 public works redirected from its existing facilities repair program.
The second option is to authorize $150,000 for the replacement of the entirety of the roof and repair all construction issues causing leaks to the interior, including windows, gutters and brick veneer cladding issues. The total cost would be $300,000.

The image is pure Mackinac Island, a sprawling timber and cedar shake house by the lake its long, white wrap-around porch with pillars mirrored one floor up with another long, white wrap-around porch with pillars.
It kind of reminded us of the Grand Hotel, said the owner, not to mention the scores more Victorian homes and porches for which Mackinac Island is famous.
But step through the front door of this house and you find its 2001 strengths. You look straight ahead through wide open rooms to high ceilings, expanses of glass, the porch and the lake beyond.
Long sight lines, walls of windows and views of the lake are the defining theme inside this house. The accents are the big round rooms at each end. Theres not a room in this house thats dark, said the owner, and there are wonderful cross breezes.
The house, for sale at $1,299,999, is just west of Brighton between two lakes. Its shoreline is 192 feet on all-sports Clifford Lake, also called Round Lake. The houses street side looks out across the road toward East Crooked Lake.
The most-used rooms, the owner says, are the two large round rooms at each end of the house. On the west side that is the family room. It is two stories tall with a two-story stone fireplace, wrapped with two stories of tall windows. On the inside wall, theres a view through glass doors to the 800-bottle wine cellar.
The east side of the house is the kitchen. Toward the lake, the round end holds the breakfast nook. From there, the kitchen extends across the depth of the house until the sink faces the street-side view, which includes a view of the other side of the lake. Its a relaxed country kitchen with white painted cabinets and vintage-style drawer pulls. The appliances are Sub-Zero, Kitchenaid, Bosch.
Three of the four bedrooms are round rooms with round walls and windows. The exception is the owners suite, where its the bathroom that got the round wall. All of the bedrooms are suites with their own full bath. Two have extra-large showers with multiple shower heads. Like a car wash, the owner said.
The layout takes an explanation. Technically, this would be called a two-story house plus a lower-level walkout. But the bottom floor the walkout stands on its own, about three-quarters free from enclosing earth, so the real-life effect is a three-story house. That makes it logical to count all three floors, 6,800 square feet, as its size, although legally you dont. The two-story family room and one bedroom suite are both located on the bottom floor.

VALDOSTA CrossPointe Church Pastor David Rogers wanted something different for his summer months.
Last fall, Rogers thought and prayed about a way to have a life-changing experience while changing the lives of others. He turned to a great friend, his church, the community, an in-church film crew. On Tuesday morning, Rogers and friend Bill Hurley will straddle their Harley-Davidsons and turn to the open road.
They embark on the Unseen Project, an ambitious two-month, criss-cross tour of the United States. Rogers explains the premise: Two friends set out on an epic journey to see America the Beautiful but find America the Unseen.
By unseen, Rogers, Hurley and the film crew will seek pockets of poverty, human trafficking, addiction and other troubles within the nation. They will learn more about these issues via human contact while sharing with others through the film project. But they also expect to find threads of faith and a deepening friendship as they travel by motorcycle from city to city and state to state.
Praying for a summer mission, Rogers was inspired by the idea of a nationwide journey. Traveling by motorcycle seemed the natural mode. Rogers has been riding since the age of 7.
Hurley seemed the appropriate partner for this adventure. Employed by Cauthan Construction, Hurley has been riding since the age of 9.
The two men became friends several years ago when the church was located in Remerton. They both say they have much in common. They like to play hard and work hard. They both believe they will see many emotional situations but they will also have fun along the way.
They have enlisted the support of their families and church for the Unseen Project.
Hurley and Rogers have met with various television and movie producers. Led by the churchs creative arts director, J.T. Cheek, a seven-man film crew of church members will accompany Rogers and Hurley. The crew will film the two mens actions. While Hurley and Rogers ride Harleys, the film crew will ride and film travel footage from pace vehicles provided by Cass Burch. The car dealership is one community business supporting the project. Allied Financial is another area sponsor. Spence Parkerson, the churchs worship pastor, has composed music for the project.
The film crew will follow Rogers and Hurley through all 61 stops, from the May 20 start to the scheduled July 19 return, as they travel north to Maine west through upstate New York to Pittsburgh through Ohio to Illinois and Chicago to the Dakotas to Montana then onward to Seattle, south through California, east to Las Vegas further east to Colorado and Denver then through the Rockies, through Texas along the Gulf Coast then home.
