Each year, thousands of Arizona residents email or call Rosie Romeros radio show with questions about everything from preventing fires in their chimneys to getting rid of tree roots invading their sewer system. His goal is to provide answers that suit the specific lifestyle wherever someone lives in Arizona. Here are questions about home maintenance and improvement from the Tucson area.
Q: The Tucson Water Department wrote to me to say the city wants to replace my water meter but does not trust the durability of my plumbing. They wont replace the meter until after I replace the water supply line from the meter to the house. Its because that pipe could be too old. My house was built in 1972 and the line is probably made of copper. What do I do next?
ANSWER: Those letters are being sent out to homeowners all over Arizona because officials are afraid that the old lines may be disintegrating. That possibly may be your problem, too. But you ought to get a plumber out to your house to look at your pipeline before you do anything else. A plumber will have to dig down about two or three feet to inspect your pipe. But you might find that your line still has lots of life in it; then you can forgo the replacement. You can notify the city about that if the pipe seems OK. But if the city proceeds and your line breaks when they install that new meter, you will have to repair it.
Q: I want to transplant a 5-foot-tall saguaro cactus that has no arms from my friends yard to my own garden. Can I do that, and how do I do that?
A: You can transplant the saguaro, but there are several points to remember. First, carefully mark the cactus so that when you put it in the ground it is facing in the same direction as it is now. You can put a chalk mark or a tag, for example, on the side of the plant that is facing south. Then you can ensure that you have the cactus in the right position when you replant. If its facing the wrong way, it could eventually develop a scar or sunburn on one side of the saguaro.
Dig a hole large enough for the root system. Then set the cactus in place and put the native soil back around the cactus. Dont water it at this time or root damage may take place. Let nature provide the water for the plant with the next rain.
Although a 5-foot cactus is not very tall, working with it is not a one-man or one-woman job. Two or three people should work on moving it out of the ground. Get a large piece of carpeting to wrap around it several times, so that when you dig it out, it wont get cut or damaged in the process. If you have to take it on the road in a vehicle, you may need to get permission in advance from the state Department of Agriculture because a saguaro is a protected plant. You might also talk to a local nursery for more advice on how to get the plant out of the ground.
All of this might seem like a lot of trouble, but saguaros are quite expensive if you have to buy them. A 5-foot saguaro could cost you $500 to $600 from a nursery.
Q: I recently had my septic tank pumped out and cleaned. When it was empty, they found a big tree root in the bottom of the tank. How do I get rid of it and should I put some compound or chemical in the tank to keep it from happening again?
A: You really need to have a septic tank company come out and work on this problem. That root must be cut out and removed and then the area where the root entered the tank has to be repaired and resealed. If left alone, that root could keep growing and crack the tank. Most septic tank experts, however, advise against using any chemicals in your tank to keep plants out.

Plans to narrow a portion of Myrtle Street to allow room for the expansion of the Water Street Inn are expected to be approved by the Stillwater City Council on Tuesday.
The southern edge of Myrtle just east of Water Street would be moved 3 feet north to accommodate the addition's tower element -- a nod to the clock tower of the Union Depot that formerly stood on the site.
The council last month gave preliminary approval to the expansion plans but asked that the three-story addition be farther back from Myrtle.
Inn owner Chuck Dougherty came back with an architects' proposal that "redesigned how the building meets and interacts with the street," Community Development Director Bill Turnblad said. "We believe that their revisions are safe for traffic and pedestrian use."
Turnblad said an earlier proposal to narrow the street by 8 feet would have made it too small to accommodate fire trucks. He said the 3-foot bump seems like a reasonable compromise.
The 21,000-square-foot addition would add about 20 rooms to the 41-room hotel. It includes a rooftop patio and a new primary entrance and lobby.

The Inn and restaurant at the western tip of Marthas Vineyard boasts fine dining and water views from every room.
Jeanne and Hugh Taylor opened the Outermost Inn as a seven-room Inn in March of 1989 and soon opened a restaurant to feed the guests. Holy shamoly! Has it been that long? I havent even thought about it, said Mr. Taylor, brother of musicians James, Livingston, Kate, and the late Alex Taylor, when asked whether there would be an anniversary celebration.
In 1971, the Taylors built the house that is now the Inn on family land near the westernmost point of Marthas Vineyard, right near the Gay Head Cliffs, in the town of Gay Head, now of course known as Aquinnah.

Jeanne and Hugh Taylor, on a recent spring day, getting ready for the season.
The Taylors restructured the house in 1988 to create a bright, clean and airy seven room Inn. The Outermost has a large covered porch overlooking a north facing view of land and sea. All the rooms feature great views and private baths. The restaurant boasts fine dining and patrons sometimes make reservations months in advance. Chef Jason Borajkiewicz returns for the summer.
Mr. Taylor talked about the Inn with the Times from the Bahamas, where he and Jeanne spent the winter recovering from last summer.
Howd you get your start?
Originally we only had the notion to open an Inn. The restaurant part came quickly after we opened.
Back in the 60s Jeanne and I were asked by Clarissa Allens mother to open the Chilmark Store, which hadnt been open for almost fifteen years. It had been run by her uncle.

WASHINGTON (AP) President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden promoted government-financed work projects as they lunched outside the White House Friday, saying the projects could be endangered if Congress does not act by the end of the summer.
Obama and Biden ate at a Shake Shack burger restaurant a few blocks from the White House with four workers from a $9.1 million Washington reconstruction project underway about 3 miles away from the lunch spot.
The White House said the project included $6.9 million in federal aid.
"It is a no-brainer for Congress to do what it's supposed to do, pass transportation funding," Obama said, his voice hoarse as he recovers from a cold.
Obama has proposed a $302 billion, four-year infrastructure spending bill, half of it paid for with existing fuel taxes and user fees and the other half paid for by eliminating corporate tax loopholes.
A key Senate committee voted Thursday to spend $265 billion on highway projects over the next six years. Still, much legislative work remains before it can become law.
The administration says current funding for projects will run out by the end of August.
Obama also used the lunch outing to promote another top policy raising the minimum wage. He said Shake Shack workers earn more than $10 an hour. The current minimum hourly wage is $7.25. Obama wants Congress to raise it to $10.10.
