NEW BEDFORD When finished, the retaining wall at South Terminal is expected to support almost anything, including New Bedford's economic future.

The specially engineered retaining wall is what will ensure the port facility can hold the weight required to be a hub of offshore wind staging.

"This is really what makes this project unique," engineer Jay Borkland said Thursday.

Made up of interlocking steel ovals and circles called cofferdams, the retaining wall will allow the facility to have an average weight-bearing capacity of 4,000 pounds per square foot. In some places, the facility will hold 18,000 pounds per square foot.

"You are going to have all of this weight transferring not just vertically but horizontally," Borkland said. "We needed a retaining wall that would not blow out under the pressure."

That's partially because one of the major components of South Terminal construction is backfilling an area of the harbor just north of the Gifford Street boat ramp.

Once put to use, the manufactured land will have to hold hundreds of pieces of steel weighing up to 500 tons, as well as hulking cranes to carry the turbine components. The retaining wall ensures the facility doesn't collapse under the pressure and into the harbor.

Choosing the retaining wall's design was a process steeped in calculations. Borkland and fellow engineer Susan Nilson even conducted a "crane study" to help them, putting sensors in the ground under different types of cranes holding different types of equipment.

UPDATE: Tara Apartments decks, sealed off limits in March, will be removed

    - May 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

COLUMBIA Tara Apartments' rear decks will be removed following a recommendation from a structural engineering firm, according to an email sent Thursday to Tara residents.

Trabue, Hansen and Hinshaw Inc., inspected all MU buildings after the University Village walkway collapse in February. The firm found that 18 of the 376 buildings had structural issues of "immediate concern." Half of those structural issues came from Tara's decks.

University Student Apartments staff had hoped to reinforce the decks, but that would only be a temporary solution, according to the report from Trabue, Hansen and Hinshaw Inc..

"Reinforcing them was the most expensive option, and it only deferred the problem because it didn't replace the original deck," said Frankie Minor, director of residential life.

The report estimated that reinforcing the decks would have cost about $885,060. The firm recommended removing the decks and replacing the doors with windows at an estimated cost of $770,220.

The rest of the "immediate concerns" in the engineering firm's report have been fixed or addressed with a temporary solution. The firm had cited issues with walkways at Missouri Theatre, Lafferre Hall and the MU Power Plant. The report also identifieda "badly deteriorated" staircase at Loeb Hall, which has been replaced with a wooden staircase.

In March, the firm sent a letter to Larry Hubbard, director of campus facilities, to"strongly recommend" closing the rear decks of all 16 buildings at Tara Apartments.

Engineers from the firm looked at the decks from the ground during its campuswide evaluation and noticed that the supporting beams had "lost some of their original capacity due to age and exposure to the elements," according to the letter.

One deck was able to support three adult men, according to the letter, but there was enough "deflection" or give that the firm recommended sealing off the decks to allow time for further inspection. The decks were sealed beginning March 21.

Changes in store for University apartments, child care

    - May 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

These wooden decks at University of Missouri-owned Tara Apartments will be removed and not replaced.

COLUMBIA -- Residents of the University of Missouri-owned Tara apartments will have to livewithout their outside decks, and student parents will have to wait awhile for a University-run child care center to re-openas the result of engineering studies.

After the collapse of a University Village Apartments walkway that cost a Columbia firefighter his life, university officials decided to close the child care center located there and seek proposals from private developers to replace it. Spokesman Christian Basi said this could not feasably be done before the start of the fall semester. The current Student Parent Center is scheduled to close on June 30.

Meanwhile, engineers have reported that the outside decks at Tara Apartments should be removed and not replaced. In a letter to students, university officials said the wooden decks have suffered weathering, and an effort to replace them would only be a temporary fix. So, the decks will be removed permanently.

8 stats outline faculty frustration with Hinsdale Middle School

    - May 16, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

HINSDALE Hinsdale Middle School has faced its share of scrutiny recently regarding facility issues that included mold remediation and major roof repairs.

At the April 28 District 181 Board of Education meeting, Hinsdale Middle School teacher Kelly Sledz, who is also representing teachers on the districts facilities committee, presented a survey to the board containing feedback from staff and administrators on an array of facility topics.

The survey asked participants to state how much they agreed or disagreed with each question or statement.

    1. To what extent do you feel your building has site or facility issues?

Results: 100 percent of responders found issues with Hinsdale Middle School facilities.

By comparison, 4 percent of Clarendon Hills Middle School staff felt its school had significant or very significant issues, while 100 percent of the Hinsdale Middle School staff felt there were significant or very significant issues at the school.

    2. Student learning is enhanced by the school

Results: 80 percent of those surveyed either disagreed or strongly disagreed with that statement.

Rather than being able to do the things we know are best for kids, we are often times driven by the limited space we have to do it in, Sledz said while reading some of the comments staff submitted with the survey statement.

Other responses from faculty stated that the school has insufficient number of classrooms, narrow halls and classroom space surrounded by noisy cafeteria, according to Sledz.
