Sprinkler prevents more damage during wood plant fire

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

ELKHART COUNTY A sprinkler system made all the difference in an early-morning fire at Indiana Wood Products in Elkhart County.

It started around 1:30a.m. at the building on County Road 43, southeast of Middlebury.

The fire was just in one building, where they make wood products. Crews say it appears some sort of equipment caught fire.

They could see flames through the roof when they got there. Four departments responded, but thanks to the buildings sprinkler system, the fire didnt spread very far.

If they didn't have a sprinkler system, it probably would of burned down. That's what saved the building - that early control of the fire, to let it get beyond the fully involved stage, Middlebury Fire Chief Jeff Wogoman says.

Crews first doused the fire from the air. Once the fire was knocked down from the roof, they doused the inside of the building.

I figured we'd have a beast on our hands, but it went pretty smooth, Chief Wogoman says.

We used our ladder to set up and hit it from the roof, and we sent crews inside once we got the roof knocked down. Then they hit the inside of the building."

One of the fire fighters on the scene strained his back, but he's doing alright.

PMPML removes bus sheds on Aundh-Ravet and Dapodi-Nigdi BRTS routes compelling citizens to stand in the scorching sun

Pune: Hundreds of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal (PMPML) bus passengers are facing hardships by standing under the scorching sun on the Aundh- Ravet and Dapodi-Nigdi roads on a daily basis, as the transport authorities have removed the existing bus sheds on these routes to make way for the new Bus Rapid Transit Service (BRTS). A 13-km stretch from Dapodi to Nigdi on the old Pune-Mumbai highway is the first BRTS route in Pimpri Chinchwad. There are 19 bus shelters on this stretch and the work has been going on for the past seven years. On the other hand, the work order of Aundh- Ravet BRTS was issued in September 2008 and it was to be completed by March 2010. However, due to land acquisition issues, the project has been delayed. As these routes are yet to be made operational, hundreds of passengers including women and senior citizens are compelled to stand in the open to face the sweltering heat. As per the records of PMPML, 103 buses ply on these routes with 1,200 trips everyday. In order to provide some relief to passengers, several corporators of PCMC have installed pandals as temporary sheds. Sheetal Shinde, corporator of Ramkrishna More Auditorium ward in Chinchwad said, I too have complained about the absence of bus shelters on the Aundh-Ravet road and have constructed small pandals for the commuters, as it is impossible to stand under the sun for hours. Civic activists too have slammed PMPML authorities for the shoddy work. They said that the debris of construction is lying on the routes due to which the buses have to take normal route instead of BRTS, which adds to the traffic woes of commuters. When contacted, Sunil Gawali, traffic manager of PMPML, said, There are no bus sheds as of now but we will be constructing better shelters soon, which will have a booth for information, ticketing and will provide lights at night as well.

Official request from Senior Citizens Forum to PMPML officials. Senior Citizen forum request for a PMPML Bus Stop with sheds on old Pune Mumbai highway. PMPML buses go till Wadgaon on old Pune-Mumbai highway. Also there are some buses from Nigdi to Talegaon. People are suffering and they have to wait for buses in the harsh sun as, there are no official shelters put up by PCMC on this route. There is an urgent need of bus-stops with shades so that commuters won't have problems in monsoon as well.

Police deal with slew of burglaries

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Elgin OPP are warning of a slew of break-ins to sheds in the Centennial Ave. area at the same time St. Thomas police are dealing with a rash of burglaries across the city.

Both police forces are asking the public for information.

St. Thomas police say a shed and two homes were burgled Friday morning. They say nothing suggests the three break-ins are related.

Meanwhile, OPP are investigating seven break-ins early Thursday to sheds on Tyke Rd. and in the Coulter Ave. area southeast of St. Thomas. OPP believe the incidents are connected.

St. Thomas police say a would-be thief tried to steal a motorcycle early Friday after cutting the lock to a shed on the city's southwest side, but was unsuccessful.

Later, a burglar forced a window between 9-11 a.m. at a house in the city's centre and stole $2,000 worth of electronics and gaming systems.

Just about the same time, a thief walked in through an unlocked rear door between 10:30-11:30 a.m. at a southeast home. The main floor was ransacked and gaming systems, cash and prescription medication stolen.

City police ask anyone with information to contact them at 519-631-1364 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (2477).

OPP say a neighbour's barking dog may have scared away a burglar who broke into three Tyke Rd. sheds sometime before 7 a.m. Thursday then fled, leaving lawn equipment including a riding mower abandoned outside.

A few hours later, OPP were called to the Coulter Ave. area and found four sheds there had been entered. They also discovered an unsuccessful attempt to enter a utility trailer.

Dissolved oxygen low in Echo, Rockport Reservoirs

    - May 13, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Echo Reservoir, along with Rockport Reservoir, has been found to contain too little dissolved oxygen due to high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen. Under the Clean Water Act, the state will look to remedy that problem with the collaboration of many agencies and water districts. (Park Record file photo)

Important efforts could be underway in the coming years for Echo and Rockport Reservoirs to improve their water quality, and it will require the participation of state, county and private parties. The water quality concerns came after a state study found the level of dissolved oxygen in both reservoirs is too low.

"The dissolved oxygen levels that occur in the reservoirs dropped below what they needed to be at for a coldwater fishery," said Mike Luers, general manager of the Snyderville Basin Water Reclamation District. "The state was required to conduct a study under the Clean Water Act to determine why [oxygen levels are low]."

Dissolved oxygen levels are too low due to excessive loading of phosphorus and nitrogen into the reservoirs. These nutrients, which are found in fertilizer and wastewater effluent, promote the growth of algae in water, Luers said. However, at night algae consume oxygen, and when there is too much algae, the oxygen content diminishes.

This lack of oxygen in the water is not suitable for trout, and it also impacts water quality. Luers said the Snyderville Basin Water Reclamation District will need to upgrade its Silver Creek water reclamation facility as part of the Division of Water Quality's recommendations. It will contribute half of the $30 million needed for the upgrade.

But runoff from wastewater facilities across the Basin and the East Side is only half of the issue. With pollution from non-point sources such as agricultural and grazing land, construction sites, urban development and roads, steps must be taken as well -- though such efforts will be voluntary, says Utah Department of Environmental Quality Director Walter Baker.

Part of the solution could be imposing more strict standards for septic systems in the area, Baker said, or connecting homes to sewer infrastructure. Summit County Health Department Director Richard Bullough said this is already a priority for the department.

"In Weber Canyon, we're going to take a look and start mapping where septic systems are. If we have a cluster where we know the systems are 30 [or more] years old, that may be an area we focus on," Bullough said.

In addition to participating in the implementation of the DWQ study, Bullough said the Health Dept. will be doing surface, ground and well water testing in the Snyderville Basin. He added there has been strong collaboration with the state on the matter.

The Weber Basin Water Conservancy District, which is the sole operator of Rockport Reservoir and is a stockholder in Echo, will also play a role in improving the reservoirs' water quality. General Manager Tage Flint said the water districts involved need to know how to balance water quality with delivering contracted water efficiently.
