(KDLT) High-tech security is becoming more affordable. You can watch your home or business from anywhere at any time with a wireless surveillance camera that costs as little as $50.
But with this low cost convenience, comes potential for high risk problems.
Josh Van Dyke is in the information technology business, so he knows a thing or two about being safe with personal info.
As part owner of Infotech Solutions in Madison, South Dakota Josh and his team protect personal data every day. To protect those machines that protect the data, Josh installed a video surveillance system that monitors his small business 24-7.
We still want to have that sort of surveillance, so if someone would try to get in, we would have a record of that, Josh Van Dyke, who is the IT Manager and part-owner at Infotech Solutions, said.
To keep hackers from watching his business, Van Dyke uses a separate network just for the cameras.
So lets say if one of our computers did get compromised or hacked here or someone would come in and jump on the Wi-Fi system, they couldnt even talk to the surveillance system, Van Dyke explained.
For others who may not be so tech-savvy, there are some simple steps you can take to make sure a stranger isnt hacking into your home or workplace.

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW)_ Home owners can turn their house into a robot with a new home security and automation service available in Topeka.
Digital Life was first offered in Kansas City and Wichita and now AT&T has expanded it to Topeka. Families away from home a lot looking for more security or those who just want a high tech house are in for a treat.
The new ATT&T Digital Life security system is on display at an entry on this year's Parade of Homes.
"So, this is our model home," says Topeka realtor, Annette Stahl.
Annette says it works right outside the front door.
"There's a camera right here, so if you have a 9 year old like I do he can come home from school, he can punch in his individualized code and once it does that it takes a picture and it unlocks the door," she says.
If you're away, Annette showed 13 News how you can remotely control your house on the Digital Life app on a smartphone or tablet.
"If you forget to turn the lights off, you simply hit "off" on the app and the lights are going to go off. You can do this in bed or when you are in San Diego or anywhere!" says Annette, " and how many times do you go to bed and you say 'did I lock the front door?', so you can just hit one button lock the front door," says Annette.
Another feature of the system is cameras. Home owners can plug in a camera anywhere in the house and view video from an iPad of a cell phone. Home owners can also control the thermostat and alarm system.
While there may be a Big Brother feel to the system, Annette says it provides security for families.

5 steps for starting, maintaining your central air system

SALT LAKE CITY Utah homeowners know summers are long and hot but that doesn't mean your home can't be a sanctuary from the heat with a properly functioning air conditioner.
"Heating and cooling accounts for more than half of the energy use in a typical U.S. home, making it the largest energy expense for most homes," according to Energy.gov.
Here are five steps to get the most of your central air system and keep it running efficiently and strong all summer long.
Before you turn it on
Walk outside. Take a look at your condenser unit. If you covered the condenser over the winter, remove the cover before you turn it on. Remove any objects or vegetation within 18 inches. It's not a bad idea to take a hose with a nozzle and spray off the coils at a 45 degree angle to remove debris between the fins.
The inside part of your central air system is often overlooked by homeowners and this is where many problems begin. Regularly changing your filter is the best thing you can do for your system.
"A dirty filter will slow down air flow and make the system work harder to keep you warm or cool," according to the energy efficiency website energystar.gov.
