LAS VEGAS As it breaks ground on a new, $350-million arena just off the Las Vegas Strip, MGM Resorts International has announced plans for a tree-lined outdoor shopping and dining district that will serve as the venues grand entrance.
The casino company said the 8-acre development dubbed The Park will feature casual patio dining, dramatic desert landscaping and long, water-wall-style fountains that will stretch more than 100 feet along the entrance.
We are literally taking down the walls and opening the doors at our resorts to develop a unique dining and entertainment district that complements its lush new surroundings, said MGM Resorts Chairman and CEO Jim Murren
Park areas lined with mature trees and tall, tulip-shaped shade structures will flank Rue de Monte Carlo, a road running perpendicular to the Las Vegas Strip between the New York-New York and Monte Carlo casinos. The street itself will be reconfigured into a curving parkway that leads up to the planned, 20,000-seat arena.
Restaurants set to open in The Park include the burger joint Shake Shack, gourmet waffle eatery Bruxie and the Japanese restaurant Sake Rok. The district will also feature a beer garden, a wine bar, the Cuba Libre Restaurant and Rum Bar, and Dierks Bentleys Whiskey Row, named for the country music star.
The redevelopment comes as MGM is reworking the Strip-facing areas in front of the two casinos into a park-like promenade.
The full entertainment district is set to open in early 2016 in conjunction with the arena, a joint venture between MGM and AEG.
MGM is hardly the first Las Vegas casino company throwing its weight behind shopping and entertainment projects as gambling revenue stalls.
Earlier this year, rival Caesars Entertainment opened the outdoor shopping district LINQ, anchored by the 550-foot-tall High Roller observation wheel.
Caesars is also working on the Grand Bazaar Shops, a 2-acre, $50 million outdoor shopping district outside of Ballys Las Vegas Hotel and Casino. The development, which is modeled after Istanbuls Grand Bazaar, is slated to open in the fall.

Nineteen people on the South Shore face charges from an April 30 undercover sting by the the California Contractors State License Board and Nevada State Contractors Board.
Dubbed Border Blitz, it snared 11 people on the California side for illegal contracting charges and eight in Nevada. Three caught in Nevada are licensed contractors in California.
The stings were at a single-family home near the junction of highways 50 and 89 junction and at a condominium in Stateline. Investigators from CSLBs Statewide Investigative Fraud Team and NSCB posed as homeowners seeking bids for various projects that included exterior painting, deck work, landscaping, and other tasks requiring general B building contractor skills.
According to investigators, those cited after giving bids in California were issued notices to appear in El Dorado County Superior Court. The eight Nevada suspects are scheduled to answer charges in Lake Tahoe Justice Court.
All 11 suspects cited in California face misdemeanor charges of contracting without a license. Home improvement and construction jobs in California valued at $500 or more (combined labor and material costs) must be conducted by a company or person with a CSLB-issued license. Nine of the 11 were also cited on a misdemeanor charge of illegal advertising. California law requires contractors to place their license number in all print, broadcast, and online advertisements. Those without a license can advertise for jobs valued at less than $500, but the ad must state that they are not a licensed contractor.
Nevadas threshold for licensed contracting work is $1,000. All eight suspects caught in Stateline were cited for contracting without a license, and seven of them face an additional charge of advertising without a license. In Nevada, advertising contracting services without a license is illegal.
Here are the names of those cited:

TJ Graves began his lawn care business by mowing his neighbors yard. He soon discovered there were other neighbors who also wanted their yards mowed. From that beginning, Graves has grown his business to include 28 customers and 47 properties, including commercial and seasonal properties.
The Minnesota FFA Association has named the Brainerd FFA member the 2014 Minnesota FFA Star in Agribusiness, one of the associations highest honors. Graves competed with three other finalists at the 85th Minnesota FFA Convention, April 27-29, in St. Paul.
In addition to mowing, his services now include snow removal. He added a truck equipped with a snow plow in 2012. Graves established his own website to promote new business and added a laptop and portable printer for his truck to print new contracts and invoice jobs that people request upon seeing his work in the neighborhoods he serves. Graves has invested his business earnings into new and updated equipment, and plans to continue expanding the business.
Graves served as Region II secretary this past year and on many chapter leadership committees. He has been a member of the Brainerd FFA Parliamentary Procedure team that competed in state for the last two years.
This fall, Graves plans include attending college in either heavy equipment operation or landscape construction and design.
His chapter adviser is Denise Reeser and his parents are Tom and Kathy Graves of Baxter.
Each year at the Minnesota FFA convention, 16 state finalists four in each category vie for the associations top awards: Minnesota FFA Star Farmer, Minnesota FFA Star in Agribusiness, Minnesota FFA Star in Production Placement and Minnesota FFA Star in Agri Science. These awards honor students who have developed outstanding agricultural skills and competencies through their supervised agricultural experience (SAE); demonstrated outstanding management skills; earned the Minnesota FFA Degree the Associations highest level of accomplishment; and met other agricultural education, scholastic and leadership requirements. Each finalist was interviewed by a panel of judges, who ultimately named the top candidate in each area. The winner was announced in an on stage convention ceremony and received a plaque and an award of $300. The runners-up also received plaques and $100 each.
