Kinkys Booty & Rockys Knockout Punch Raise Bar In Broadway Ad Landscape

    - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Darth Vader wears a size 16 shoe, which is murder on the cobbler when you add to the mix red patent leather by the yard, three-inch spike heels and some bling. Kinky boots, indeed.

Ticket buyers leave Broadways Winter Garden Theatre feeling they got their moneys worth after the musicals 20-minute balls-to-the-wall fight sequences, complete with spraying blood, clanging bells and the primal thunk of glove pounding flesh. Howd they do that? they wonder.Drew Hodges, the Broadway ad man who shook up the industry in 1996 with his mold-breaking campaigns for Rent featuring rough graphics, grimy looking punk photography and dare-you-to-see-this copy, entered the Tony Awards season this week with more game-changers that are separating the shows he represents from the sea of exclamation points and quotation marks that are the bread-and-butter of theatrical advertising.

Start with Rocky, which got middling notices on the whole but acclaim for Rockys championship fight with Apollo Creed. The ad for the show a gritty photo of that climactic match explains how the sequence was designed for maximum realism. A line from the photo leads to a box telling us, for example, that custom-made gloves were designed to allow the actors to land full punches without hurting each other.

Remember how Penn & Teller would open their act by telling us how magic tricks were done? It didnt wreck the show. The same logic applies here. You have to remind everybody how you are not like the others, Hodges told me this morning at the midtown Manhattan offices of his company, SPOTCO. Here, its not like were giving away a secret. The question is, Does the ad make them want to see it? Well, knowing things beforehand heightens the experience.

Hodges and his group worked with Rocky director Alex Timbers to narrow down which effects to fit into the ad. Alex gave us 20 ideas, and we may do another. Its about the reality of the show, and people are loving that scene. The point is to freeze the moment.

Producer Scott Rudin, whos not connected with Rocky, sent Hodges a note calling it the best ad of the season.

And no-one does shock and awe like Scott, Hodges said, relishing the hat-tip.

Hodges had a different challenge with last years Tony best musical winnerKinky Boots: How to keep interest up when all the attention is being focused on new shows. Cue James Earl Jones, Josh Groban, celebrity chef Mario Batali, tennis legend Martina Navratilova and a few other bold-facers, all outfitted in the shows ubiquitous thigh-high boots, under copy reading Just Be Who You Want To Be.

Each of the stars is promoting a favorite charity; click on the image and you see the photo shoot and a discussion of the cause.

Rocky came together in three days, Hodges said. The Kinky campaign was probably our longest ever in planning, a year since we thought, Wouldnt it be great to get well-known people into those boots? We see this everywhere else, using celebrities to promote a cause and a product, but not on Broadway. If you dont define what is the event of your show, it will define you, he said. We didnt want Kinky Boots to be seen as Priscilla 2. I hope to get the fire department from Hempstead, Long Island into the boots. The brand is big enough now.

    Lush landscape, relaxed feel

When a mid-century house at 220 Onondaga Ave., right behind Kevin and Minnie Pulitzer McCluskeys home, came up for sale in 2008, the couple bought it, thinking that it would be an ideal home for Minnies mother, once she had sold her own house.

But the late Lilly Pulitzer Rousseau, who died in April 2013, never lived on Onondaga Avenue, having remained in her longtime home at 710 S. County Road, which sold last December.

The house behind the McCluskeys would have been a fine fit for her, Minnie said.

It was in great shape, as it had already been renovated before we bought it, Minnie said. All we needed to do was repaint some of the rooms and change some of the landscaping, making it even more lush.

Thats about it. We even kept the patio furniture because it was lovely. All we had to do was recover it.

With 2,872 square feet of living space, inside and out, the mid-block house has three bedrooms and two-and-a-half baths. It stands a few lots west of the point where North Ocean Boulevard makes its final curve to accommodate the beachfront estates on the northern tip of the island.

Moms property was so big, and this place would have been perfect. She was so excited, and since our property backs up to it, we could have opened the yards up and combined them. My son, Jack, could have done a cannonball in the pool right next to her every day.

That plan, though, was not to be. So the McCluskeys have listed the house for sale at $2.4 million with Brown Harris Stevens, where Minnie is a real estate agent.

Its priced to sell, she said. Its great. We are a little prejudiced, of course.

A circular driveway leads to the clean-lined, one-story stucco home, painted a pale terra-cotta color with white trim. A wall of Art Deco-style glass blocks by the front door greets visitors. There are built-in shelves in the entry.

    'Utterly offensive blight on landscape'

    - May 2, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Wind turbines at Bungendore, near Canberra, are not to the liking of Treasurer Joe Hockey. Photo: Bloomberg

Treasurer Joe Hockey has attacked wind farms as utterly offensive and a blight on the landscape in the latest sign that the Abbott government intends to cut back on renewable energy.

Mr Hockey told Macquarie Radios Alan Jones that driving to Canberra from Sydney meant he passed the Bungendore wind farm near Lake George on the NSW side of the ACT border.

Can I be a little indulgent? I drive to Canberra to go to Parliament ... and I must say I find those wind turbines around Lake George to be utterly offensive, Mr Hockey said. I think theyre a blight on the landscape.

Mr Hockey said he could not stop the wind turbines operating: "We can't knock those ones off because they're into locked-in schemes and there is a certain contractual obligation I'm told associated with those things."

The Treasurer said the government was intent on cutting massive duplication and indicated more of the climate change-related agencies would be pared back in the budget. He appeared to err, however, saying that the Clean Energy Regulator would go in light of Commission of Audit recommendations.

Well, they say get rid of the Clean Energy Regulator, and we are, Mr Hockey said. A spokeswoman said Mr Hockey had meant to say the Clean Energy Finance Corp, the green investment bank, would go.

NSW Greens upper house member John Kaye said the Treasurer's comments were a worrying signal that the federal and NSW Coalition governments were preparing to undermine Australias renewable energy industry.

Pandering to the Flat Earth, anti-wind brigade, crosses both parties of the Coalition and the federal-state divide, Mr Kay said.

'Why we're moving money up the hill'

    3:51pm Thursday 1st May 2014 in News

Ihave visitedthe Lake District today to see first-hand the vital role that Cumbrias moorland farmers that play in preserving this treasured landscape.

Ivalued meeting sheep farmers, hearing their concerns and finding out more about how they support your local community.

Sheep farming has a long heritage in the Lakes rather like dairy in my county, Shropshire and even today, farmers continue to play a crucial part in maintaining one of Englands most beautiful landscapes.

Thats why my department, Defra, announced last week that we are moving money up the hill as part of our reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

This means that moorland farmers many of them Lake District sheep farmers will receive 90 per centmore money per hectare. From next year, they can expect about 56 per hectare, a 26 jump.

This money is vital for the Lake Districts farmers because their role extends far beyond producing traditional Herdwick lamb although thats obviously a crucial element.

By grazing their herds on this tough terrain, they maintain the entire upland environment: everything from tiny insects to flocks of farmland birds. Without their hard work, drystone walls would collapse, habitats would change dramatically and distinctive local foods like that Herdwick lamb would struggle to thrive.

Not only do moorland farmers in Cumbria have a vital role in preserving local heritage and traditions, they also help help make the Lake District the fantastic tourism destination that it is today.

Weekend retreat: Skylodge's infinity pool. Photo: John Downs

A hotelier has opened his mountain lodge to a lucky few guests, writes Erin O'Dwyer.

I arrive for a night at the new six-star Skylodge, on Mt Tamborine in the Gold Coast hinterland, after a two-week beach holiday that ended too soon. It is a post-holiday holiday designed to beat the back-to-work blues. And it does.

Within the hour, I have demolished the cheese platter, refilled my champagne glass twice, and I am lazing back in the infinity pool, looking out from the lush escarpment to the glittering line of Gold Coast towers beyond.

It is exactly what owner Robert Maas had in mind when he launched the lodge late last year.

Skylodge was designed as a family home. When Maas bought the property a decade ago, the 80-year-old farm house was in need of care. He moved it from the southern end of the property to the escarpment edge, in order to make best use of the views. Then he renovated it, wrapping it in exquisite modern Queensland-inspired architecture.

The result is a long bunker-type lodge that melts into the landscape. The original cottage sits at the southern end, linked to the rest of the house by wide timber verandahs, silver-painted weatherboards and a corrugated-iron roof.
