The German shepherd and French mastiff are laying in mud puddles on opposite sides of the entrance. Having rained the day before, the dogs are subjected to the intense Louisiana humidity.
However, the dogs may be the most comfortable living things that spend their days at the jail, located just off of the Thibodaux bypass at 952 La. 3185.
The jail was built in 1976 and was designed to hold fewer than 100 inmates. It now has a capacity to hold up to 245 inmates. But there are more people arrested than that in Lafourche. The overflow is housed in three other jails.
It costs Lafourche $4 per day to house an inmate in its parish jail. On Friday morning, 98 inmates were being housed in facilities outside Lafourche, costing the parish an extra $2,220 per day.
Sheriff Craig Webre is pushing for money to build a new detention center to replace the jail that is outdated and deteriorating.
Registered voters can cast their ballots Saturday on a 0.2 percent, 30-year sales tax to build a $30 million, 600-bed jail.
The outside of the jail looks like any other nearly 40-year-old building in south Louisiana.
The color is fading from the red brick exterior walls. The inside looks much older than its age.
The dull, beige paint is peeling off inside walls, though repainting the facility is the least of the sheriff's concerns.

President Obama was at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig, Philippines, on Tuesday, during the last leg of his four-nation tour through the Asia-Pacific region.
President Obama returned to Washington on Tuesday after a weeklong visit to Asia.
The four-nation tour was designed to showcase U.S. involvement in the region, but it produced only modest diplomatic developments. And toward the end of the trip, the president offered a modest assessment of his overall foreign policy.
The Asia trip didn't produce a blockbuster trade deal, or bring an end to North Korea's nuclear threat. The U.S. won a smaller-scale agreement to station military forces in the Philippines. And it polished its newfound ties with Malaysia. This is the kind of workaday diplomacy that President Obama says is not sexy but pays off in the long run.
"That may not always attract a lot of attention, and it doesn't make for good argument on Sunday morning shows. But it avoids errors. You hit singles; you hit doubles. Every once in a while we may be able to hit a home run. But we steadily advance the interests of the American people and our partnership with folks around the world."
The ongoing crisis in Ukraine cast a shadow over the trip. Having watched Russia annex Crimea with only limited challenge from the West, Asian allies wanted reassurance the U.S. will support them against any aggressive moves by China. Congressional Republicans, like Tennessee Sen. Bob Corker, have criticized what they say is the administration's tepid response to Russia's moves in Ukraine.
"I'm very concerned that as we've seen from this administration on so many tough issues, their policies are always late after, after the point in time when we could have made a difference in the outcome," Corker said on CBS.
Obama suggests his critics are really calling for a stronger military response, and argues they haven't learned the lessons of the Iraq War:
"Frankly, most of the foreign-policy commentators that have questioned our policies would go headlong into a bunch of military adventures that the American people have no interest in participating in and would not advance our core security interests."

A government agency set up to punish career criminals in British Columbia has backed down from trying to seize a mans home in a case that has shed light on what critics call a pattern of overreach the powerful office enjoys.
B.C.s Civil Forfeiture Office ended its most high-profile case Monday after a stinging defeat at the provinces top court this year, choosing to abandon the proceedings rather than continue down a path that appeared likely to raise constitutional questions about the legislation under which it operates.
The office, which was created in 2006 to fight organized crime but has come to have a far broader reach, filed its notice of discontinuance in the case of David Lloydsmith on Monday, ending its years-long pursuit of his home. The office has faced questions about the cases it takes on and the fairness of the process after a recent Globe and Mail investigation.
Im trying to wrap my head around all this, Mr. Lloydsmith, whose story was told in the Globe series on civil forfeiture, said in an interview. In my heart of hearts, I was hoping and praying for it. I didnt know.
Mr. Lloydsmith, a former electrician on partial disability in the Fraser Valley community of Mission, opened the front door of his residence on Oct. 15, 2007, after a knock from an RCMP officer. The Mountie told Mr. Lloydsmith he was investigating a 911 call and asked to search the home. Mr. Lloydsmith refused and was arrested.
The officer found marijuana plants growing in the basement but charges were never laid and the officer would write in a report that the offence was minor. A judge would later deem the police search unreasonable and rule it violated Mr. Lloydsmiths Charter rights.
But the Civil Forfeiture Office which does not need a conviction or even charges to pursue a file, and has been far more aggressive in seizing property than its counterparts in other provinces continued to pursue the house. In February, it took one aspect of Mr. Lloydsmiths case to the provinces highest court, where it lost.
The Court of Appeals decision meant the Charter violations in Mr. Lloydsmiths case would have to be dealt with before a full trial. The Court of Appeal also said the system has an imbalance of power that can put ordinary citizens at the offices mercy. The offices director last year told The Globe that 99 per cent of the people the office targets settle on terms in its favour.
The office could have continued fighting the case in the lower-level B.C. Supreme Court, but instead chose to discontinue the proceedings. An exact reason was not provided.
Bibhas Vaze, Mr. Lloydsmiths lawyer, said both he and his client are relieved the case is over.

A COWBOY paver has been jailed for bullying two vulnerable elderly clients into spending thousands of pounds on new driveways.
James Doran was caught when a quick witted bank manager called the police after an 89-year-old customer came in to ask for a loan to pay the 6,500 cost of the shoddy work.
He went on to prey on an 87-year-old widow who suffered from dementia and did not know what she was doing when she signed a contract for 2,900.
Doran used three false names and three different company names, each with a different bogus address. His two victims lived in Plympton and Exeter and he used addresses in Marsh Barton and Launceston to throw investigators off his track.
He altered the dates on his agreements to make it look as if they had been signed days earlier, thereby getting round a law which gave customers seven days to change their minds.
His companies were called South West Patios and Drives, Abbey Paving, and Town and Country Driveways and operated all over Devon.
At the time he carried out his shoddy work he was already subject to a suspended sentence for similar consumer offences in Suffolk, Exeter Crown Court was told.
Doran and his sidekick Patrick Collins were eventually arrested outside the police headquarters building in Exeter when the family of the dementia sufferer kicked them off the job and complained to trading standards officers.
Doran, aged 29, of Leighton Buzzard, and Connors, aged 24, of Hatfield, admitted a total of nine counts of fraud or misleading business practices. Doran was jailed for 30 months and Connors for 18 months, suspended for two years.
