Condemned
The city of Spartanburg will demolish nine homes including two located at 148 and 156 Washington St. The homes will be demolished as part of a renewed city effort to rid communities of blight, said City Community Services Director Mitch Kennedy.
The city of Spartanburg has targeted nine houses for demolition in an effort to rid communities of blight.
City Council recently allocated $100,000 to the city's code enforcement budget to target houses that have long been condemned, said City Community Services Director Mitch Kennedy.
Houses scheduled for demolition between now and June 30 include 312 and 335 Brown Ave., 1 Buckthorne Road, 499 and 505 Greenleaf St., 336 and 338 Ridgewood Ave., and 148 and 156 Washington St.
The properties are included on the city's list of condemned properties; some have been on the list since 2004. In the past, the city hasn't had adequate funds for demolition, but Kennedy said the recent council allocation combined with an additional $141,000 for the next fiscal year, will help reduce neighborhood blight, Kennedy said.
After a house is demolished, the owner will still own the land, but the city will place a lien on the property's taxes to help recoup demolition costs.
The properties we're talking about are in bad condition from a code enforcement standpoint, Kennedy said. These properties have gone through our process, which is very lengthy, and the city is able to move forward with demolition through the international property codes that gives cities the authority to do so.
Most of the properties on the list are boarded up or were heavily damaged by fire.
Mayor Junie White said the city has limited funds to address the problem, but council will commit funds every year until the boarded-up houses are demolished.

"There are many Christians and we give a lot of respect to freedom of religion," a government propaganda official told the state-run Global Times newspaper.
However, in an address to Communist Party members earlier this year a senior official for religious affairs complained that Christianity's growth had been "too excessive and too haphazard." Monday's demolition sent a chill through China's Christian community, now thought to number anywhere between 23 million and 100 million people. Some church leaders and academics fear Beijing may be paving the way for a nationwide campaign targetting the officially illegal "house church" movement that refuses to accept Communist Party oversight.
The government would continue to protect "legal religious venues" but would "aggressively push on with the demolition of illegal buildings in accordance with the law," the state-controlled Zhejiang Daily newspaper warned on Tuesday.
Chinese Christians reacted angrily as photographs showing the crippled church spread.
"They have gone too far. Countless worshippers are shedding tears of sorrow tonight," one Protestant leader from Wenzhou said after virtually the entire church structure came crashing down on Monday evening. "It is outrageous and utterly unjust." Chen Yilu, the head of the Nanjing Union Theological Seminary, took the unusual step of speaking out against the government's "crude and hard-line" handling of the situation.
The church's demolition would damage the Communist Party's image and harm "social stability", he predicted.
The Zhejiang Daily defended the demolition, claiming church leaders had been given the chance to demolish "illegal" parts of the building themselves but had "failed to live up to their commitment".
Congregants had "spread online rumours" about the church's destruction and "incited illegal gatherings inside this illegal building," it claimed.
The propaganda official claimed the demolition was part of a wider campaign against "illegal constructions". More than 43 million square feet of illegal structures had so far been torn down "including factories and Buddhist temples." The destruction of Sanjiang church, which had taken years to build and was designed to hold several thousand worshippers, showed authorities were "treating everyone equally", the official added.

Officials from SCB, Stone Creek Builders, announced on April 28, 2014 the impending completion of renovations to a Fair Haven home, after roughly six months of pouring love and care into the project.
The project to improve the Fair Haven home was described by an SCB representative as a labor of love, one in which the group upgraded everything from the home's kitchen and bathrooms to its plumbing and lighting fixtures.
Through careful planning and skillful execution, SCB completely renovated the home's kitchen. Upgrades to the area included white and black cabinets, stainless steel commercial appliances and mosaic tile by "New Revenna" to add a whimsical touch to the commercial feel.
The group also renovated the bathrooms in the home. The master bath was reworked with all white marble, a claw-foot soaking tub, marble steam shower fitted with custom shower doors, hand-held shower head and a rain-shower head.
The SCB group reworked the other bathroom with all-white, subway tile. Half a bath was decked out with a new toilet bowl, new vanity and fish wallpaper to add a lighthearted touch.
All the home's flooring was sanded and re-finished. To compliment the improved flooring, wall paneling was upgraded with Wainscoting in some areas. The home's light system was upgraded with new light fixtures, wall scones, chandeliers, ceiling fans and lantern pendants.
The SCB group painted the house and applied wall paper to some of the home's rooms. As evidenced by the charming, whimsical touches added to the home's kitchen and bathrooms, the SCB group wanted the renovations to be as heartwarming for the homeowners as they were practical.
"The house was a labor of love," stated an SBC representative. "We hope the home owner loves it as much we do."
All that's left to reach completion of the renovation is bring the furniture back into the home, along with all of the homeowners' collectibles and personal items.

Architects Dan Cheetham and Michelle Tarsney teamed up once again to create their newest art installation titled String Theory for GSD&M, a global advertising agency. This installation makes a statement about how art in the workplace draws on individual perspectives to stimulate creativity and social gathering among coworkers.
GSD&M is a company full of visionaries who rely heavily on creativity to produce work that is engaging and powerful, said Cheetham. Michelle and I felt that the GSD&M team would not only appreciate the beauty of String Theory, but would greatly benefit from the social interactions and exchanging of ideas that are bound to take place.
Studies show that displaying artwork in the modern day workplace not only inspires creativity and improves individual and collective wellbeing, but can also significantly improve productivity. According to a recent report produced by the International Art Consultants (IAC) and the British Council for Offices, 86% of the 800 survey respondents think that art is more relevant than ever in todays office environment and 93% agreed that having art in the workplace creates a more welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere for employees and visitors alike.
The team unveiled the dynamic, floating art piece to the public during GSD&Ms 2014 South by Southwest industry party, which brings together thousands of people from all over the world. String Theory is suspended from the second floor ceiling of the main foyer of GSD&Ms office building in downtown Austin, with its base dangling just above the heads of onlookers at nine feet above the floor. String Theory may be viewed from the second or first floor and from a variety of angles that alter the appearance and experience of the art piece.
The installation features over 5 miles of string wound back and forth between two geometric shapes, a wide circular ring at the top and a smaller triangular base that hangs at the bottom. The base segregates the string between the three primary colors used: red, yellow and blue in their most dense and pure form. As the viewers eye moves up the sculpture, the string disperses as it stretches upward, causing the colors to become more complex and the hues to mix in an ethereal, cloud-like ring. The effect causes the primary colors to visually converge and intermix. Depending on the perspective of the viewer, the installation generates variations of secondary and tertiary colors and is flexible in its form.
The name String Theory does not only reference the material of the piece, but also the potential of art in the workplace. Cheetham and Tarsney work from the philosophy that incorporating architecture, design and art to spaces revitalizes them and makes them more useful. Their hope is that String Theory will be a catalyst in the workplace to inspire creative ideas and engage colleagues. Cheetham and Tarsneys installations are site specific, interactive, spatial and can be experienced on many different scales.

About Fyoog
Fyoog is an architecture, planning, and design practice led by Dan Cheetham and Michelle Tarsney. Fyoog draws its name from fugue, a contrapuntal musical structure in which independent voices are overlapped to create a rich, complex, and multilayered harmony. Fyoog seeks to apply this concept to the built environment through a design process that layers programmatic synergies, contextual and historical factors, and cultural influences into a cohesive composition.
