Attic for adults Home and Garden More Home & Garden On The House By Jim Weiker The Columbus Dispatch Sunday April 27, 2014 8:42 AM
When Jenny Klaus and Mike Falkenhain sought extra living space in their Victorian Village home several years ago, they knew they could find it in the huge unfinished attic.
But the couple wasnt sure how to use the space. With one of their children then in preschool, they considered finishing the space as a playroom. As the children grew, however, the couples needs changed.
By the time they decided to move forward on the project last year, they needed a master suite more than a playroom.
Working with Ketron Custom Builders of Granville, the couple turned 1,400 square feet of unfinished attic space into an adult retreat a master bedroom and bathroom, an exercise room, a walk-in closet and a sitting area.
The results will be open to visitors next weekend during the annual Home Improvement Showcase sponsored by the central Ohio chapter of the National Association of the Remodeling Industry.
The Victorian Village home is one of 16 stops on the tour, which showcases home renovations from the basement to the attic.
Klaus and Falkenhain, who are both doctors, have enjoyed their attic master suite for six months.
Theres nothing I dont like about it, Klaus said.
The room seemingly a natural extension of the house is lighted by windows on three sides, including a massive half-circle below the 17-foot-high roof pitch that spreads moonlight through the room.

HAYDEN - A small, family-owned Hayden manufacturer - Bullet Tools - had two major guests Friday afternoon.
They were the top Democrat and top Republican from the U.S. Senate's Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee: Maria Cantwell of Washington and Jim Risch of Idaho.
The senators toured Bullet, a maker of innovative "green" construction industry tools. Cantwell and Risch saw first-hand how the business has benefited from federal grants.
Bullet, at 3390 W. Hayden Ave., has received funding from the U.S. Small Business Administration's State Trade and Export Promotion (STEP) program.
STEP funds helped Bullet expand into international markets, which now make up half of its business, said Ben Toews, president of Bullet.
"The (committee's) programs have contributed to both our growth and the improved lives and livelihoods of contractors globally by enabling us to provide construction industry tools that require no electricity, produce no dust and improve installation time and efficiency," Toews said.
Following the tour, the senators announced plans to introduce bipartisan legislation this year to extend the STEP program.
In 2010, it was enacted as part of the Small Business Jobs Act. The three-year pilot program was designed to help small businesses by awarding grants to states to help small businesses begin or expand exports of their products. The pilot expired in 2013.
The senators' plan would transition STEP from a pilot program to a full program, and Cantwell and Risch will make improvements to the program based on lessons learned from participating companies.
"Here in the Pacific Northwest, we know that exports are crucial to our economy," Cantwell said. "The STEP program is a critical tool for small companies to increase exports in a growing global marketplace. That's where job growth and job creation is going to take place."

East Texans on May 10 will decide the outcomes of four area bond elections that propose to build seven new schools and renovate other facilities at a total cost of $225.2 million.
Heres a look at the area bonds:
White Oak ISD
White Oak ISD is asking voters to approve a $25.2 million bond that would pay to build a new high school and field house.
The election is proposing to build a single-structure high school with one secured public entrance. The building would feature a three-story academic wing with modern science labs; a city/school library with public access after school hours; a fine arts area for music, arts and drama; and a 1,200-seat gymnasium, with its floor below ground level and an entrance on the north end of the T-shaped high school. The plan keeps the gym built in 1990 intact. The original high school was built in the 1970s.
A 10,900-square-foot field house, envisioned just west of the football stadium, accounts for $2.2 million of the proposal.
If approved, the districts debt service portion of the tax rate would increase from 7 cents to about 42 cents per $100 valuation. That total would be added to the districts maintenance and operation rate of $1.17 per $100 valuation for a total tax rate of about $1.59 per $100 valuation.
At that rate, a homeowner of a property valued at $100,000 would pay $1,590 in property taxes to the district annually with no exemptions about $28.33 more per month from the payments that would be due on the same property if the bond fails.
The last district bond election was in 1999.

SIOUX CITY | The screech of saws and drills and hum of compressors and generators echoed inside the juxtaposition of contemporary steel and concrete with century-old timber and brick.
"This is where the future meets the past, with the Hard Rock casino meeting the Battery Building," Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Sioux City developer Bill Warner said, raising his voice to be heard over the din of the construction noise. "You can really start to see the connection of the two buildings."
Wearing a hard hat and safety glasses, Warner stood next to what once was the east exterior wall of the Battery, a former warehouse built in 1906. Now connected to a new 58,000-square-foot, one-story structure, the original brick facade is visible from almost everywhere on the future casino floor.
The facade, which was faded and in need of repair after decades of exposure to the elements, has been tuckpointed and cleaned as part of an extensive restoration of the warehouse.
"It looks beautiful, doesn't it?" Warner asked a Journal reporter and photographer/videographer.
Warner and Hard Rock Sioux City General Manager Todd Moyer on April 16 gave the Journal an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the vast downtown entertainment venue under construction at Third and Water streets.
Despite some foul-weather-related setbacks, the $128.5 million project is on pace to open as scheduled in mid- to late summer, Warner said. Officials are waiting to announce a specific date until they have a better idea of when all the work will be done.
"We don't want to pick a date and then go past it," he said.
A small city of construction workers -- a half-dozen or more contractors employing a total of nearly 300 people -- are deployed inside and outside the job site, with some crews putting in seven-day weeks.
During the tour, a Journal reporter watched workers perform a multitude of tasks, from drywall and painting to welding and wiring to pushing a wheelbarrow of wet cement to installing equipment on the roof.
