(Phys.org) A speed history-making cycle is being prepared by a team of eight determined UK engineering students. They have ambitions to unleash a vehicle capable of reaching a top speed of 90 mph by pedal power alone. As such, it could become the fastest human-powered vehicle in history. The name of this vehicle is the Arion1 Velocipede. The design is by Liverpool University students, known as the ULVT (University of Liverpool Velocipede Team). They hope to break the 83.13 mph record set last year by TU Delft and VU Amsterdam universities. The competition to break the record for the fastest human powered vehicle is governed by the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA), which hosts an annual event, the World Human Powered Speed Challenge, an event that takes place under rigorous test conditions in Battle Mountain, Nevada.
According to the university's student news service, data is touted such as the future ARION1 Velocipede becoming 40 times more aerodynamic than a Bugatti Veyron and generating enough power to light the average UK home.
The design involves the rider being just five inches from the floor, generating over 700 watts of pure human power. The ARION1 is to use a camera to feed images to a monitor in front of the rider's eyes.
The rider is positioned almost lying down, close to the ground, minimizing air resistance in "recumbent" cycling style. The vehicle encasement is a carbon fiber shell. The design looks odd, like a giant speeding bullet or a junior-sized spaceship, but the shape is for practical reasons. A Daily Mail report noted, "The unusual shape of the Arion1's exterior shell improves the aerodynamic behavior of the vehicle as air resistance is the biggest challenge to maintaining speed. The design uses the same concept as aircraft wings adopting an inverted 'teardrop' shape to cut through the air as easily as possible." The ARION1 weighs less than 25 kilos (55 pounds).

The University of Liverpool Velocipede Team (ULVT) are members of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Philippa Oldham, head of transport at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said, 'To get to the speeds they intend to, the team will have to make sure everything is perfect, from the vehicle's aerodynamics to the size of its wheels."
The team aims to have the Arion1 designed and manufactured by May next year, in time for the record event in September of next year at the World Human Power Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada.

A U.S. appeals court is wrestling with whether law enforcement has the authority to obtain and use records from cellphone towers, in a case that weighs the importance of people's right to privacy in the age of digital technology.
The American Civil Liberties Union and other groups say it's too easy for law enforcement officials to get cell tower records and argue that they should be covered by the ban on unreasonable searches and seizures, which is protected by the Fourth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Current law allows authorities to obtain a court order by telling a judge the cellphone information is relevant to their investigation. The ACLU is seeking a higher legal standard, with investigators required to show probable cause that a crime was committed, and obtain a search warrant.
"This provides the government with a time machine it has never had before," ACLU attorney Nathan Wessler told the three-judge panel of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday. "It's a great wealth of information about your private life."
The case follows recent disclosures that U.S. intelligence agencies, including the National Security Agency, routinely scoop up cellphone communications across a broad spectrum of Americans. And cellphone-tower cases have resulted in split verdicts in two other federal appeals courts. It's likely one will wind up before the U.S. Supreme Court, which in 2012 ruled that attaching global-positioning tracking devices to suspects' cars was a breach of privacy.
The latest case stems from an appeal by 22-year-old Quartavious Davis, who is serving a 162-year sentence for a string of robberies in 2010. He was convicted in part because authorities obtained from cellphone companies more than 11,000 tower location records spanning 67 days, some of which placed his phone near stores in the Miami area where the robberies occurred.
In Davis' case, other evidenceincluding DNA and testimony from fellow gang memberswas used to convict him, but prosecutors relied heavily on the cell tower records in closing arguments to the jury. Davis was the only one of six men charged who went to trial, with the others pleading guilty. Judges had no discretion in deciding his sentence because of minimum mandatory requirements, which many defense attorneys decry as unduly harsh punishment.
Some of the gang had already been charged and arrested when prosecutors obtained the court order on Feb. 2, 2011, to gain access to Davis' cellphone tower records. He was added to a new indictment about two weeks later.
If the courts ultimately find that a warrant should be necessary to obtain cell tower records, it should not affect Davis' case, Assistant U.S. Attorney Roy Altman argued. He cited the "good faith" exception for law enforcementif authorities relied on a law that is later found unconstitutional, they shouldn't be punished for it.
It will likely be weeks or months before the panel rules. Meanwhile, Wessler said yet another cellphone tower records case is winding its way toward a hearing in another federal appeals court.

The Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund, which blew through nearly $2million on expenses such as fundraising, polling and consultants in the first three months of this year, is not alone in its meager spending on candidates.
A Washington Post analysis found that some of the top national tea party groups engaged in this years midterm elections have put just a tiny fraction of their money directly into boosting the candidates theyve endorsed.
The practice is not unusual in the freewheeling world of big-money political groups, but it runs counter to the ethos of the tea party movement, which sprouted five years ago amid anger on the right over wasteful government spending. And it contrasts with the urgent appeals tea party groups have made to their base of small donors, many of whom repeatedly contribute after being promised that their money will help elect conservative politicians.
Out of the $37.5million spent so far by the PACs of six major tea party organizations, less than $7million has been devoted to directly helping candidates, according to the analysis, which was based on campaign finance data provided by the Sunlight Foundation.
The dearth of election spending has left many favored tea party candidates exposed before a series of pivotal GOP primaries next month in North Carolina, Nebraska, Idaho and Kentucky.
Roughly half of the money nearly $18million has gone to pay for fundraising and direct mail, largely provided by Washington-area firms. Meanwhile, tea party leaders and their family members have been paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in consulting fees, while their groups have doled out large sums for airfare, a retirement plan and even interior decorating.
The lavish spending underscores how the protest movement has gone professional, with national groups transforming themselves into multimillion-dollar organizations run by activists collecting six-figure salaries.
Three well-known groups the Tea Party Patriots, the Tea Party Express and the Madison Project have spent 5percent or less of their money directly on election-related activity during this election cycle. Two other prominent tea party groups, the Senate Conservatives Fund and FreedomWorks, have devoted about 40percent of their money to direct candidate support such as ads and yard signs.
On average, super PACs had spent 64percent of their funds on directly helping candidates by roughly this stage in the 2012 election cycle, according to Federal Election Commission data.
Leaders of the tea party PACs defended how they have been using their resources, saying that securing the small-dollar contributions that sustain their organizations requires investment.

As part of our recent market analysis, we mentioned Remodeling Magazines Cost vs. Value report for 2013-2014. The top five national remodeling projects with the highest return on investment for this year are a new front door, a wood deck addition, adding an attic bedroom, garage door replacement and a minor kitchen remodel.
While these projects have a somewhat limited scope individually and are often part of a bigger remodeling project, each has the potential not only to add to the value of the home but also to enhance the experience of living in the home. In the next few columns, we will explore each project in greater detail. This week, lets talk about the front door.
If you have ever browsed the exterior door section of the home improvement stores, you will see there are a lot of options for front doors. This is just a sliver of the market. There are thousands of options with various styles, materials and colors.
To top it off and make the choice even more difficult, there are even more hardware options for door handles. Basically, there are a lot of great front doors and a lot of great houses, but they dont all go together. Choosing a door that doesnt work with your house diminishes the design of both. For example, if you install a lovely Craftsman door in a 1970s rambler, you will see a clash of styles. There is nothing wrong with either the door or the house, but the combination spoils them both.
Therefore, knowing and understanding the style of your house is crucial. Is your home traditional or modern? Is it a fairytale Tudor revival, classic craftsman bungalow, charming Cape Cod or California ranch? These are the common house styles in the Salt Lake valley and you see them often.
You may find that your home wasnt designed in one clear, distinct style. If that is the case, it most likely has elements of several different styles and you will need to decide which is predominant. Once you have determined the predominant style of your home, the next decision is whether to revive and enhance the door or change it into something else.
A front door will really set the tone and theme for your entire exterior style. Here is where we will say (as we do every week!) that you need to look at the big picture and PLAN AHEAD. Every upgrade or home improvement should reflect the dream the master plan for your house. It does not make sense to buy a new front door no matter how beautiful it is if it does not match your current or future house style.
There are three general approaches to selecting a front door that works with your house: You can do it yourself and research home styles and architectural styles on your own, you can trust the door salespeople to lead you in the right direction (but note these folks know a lot more about doors than residential architectural styles) or you can hire an independent residential architect or design professional.
Not only is the style of the door a consideration for this project, but the material the door is made out of must also be selected. Wood doors are beautiful works of art, but you must be willing to accept the consequences of the material. Wood is always moving expanding and contracting hour by hour depending on the temperature, sunlight and humidity it is experiencing. This volatility can lead to swelling, shrinking and even splitting. Of course, if your hearts desire is a beautifully stained door, wood is your obvious choice.
If you prefer a more stable material, fiberglass may be just the thing. These doors are manufactured to look as much like wood as possible, often featuring a simulated wood grain. However, if you think of a painted door made out of real wood, it has been planed and sanded to a smooth finish before it is painted. Go easy on the fake wood grain options.
