The powers that be behindAshley'sin Little Rock's historicCapital Hotelsawthe growing food revolution in Little Rock and felt that things were passing them by.
"This used to be the fun destination for people to come and have a good time," said marketing director Chuck Magill."Now it's a place that people might just think of for an anniversary or other special occasion."
Food trends have changed, and the elegant yet rather stuffy dining room of Ashley's has become a symbol of a past that is swiftly being replaced by restaurants that are more casual and as Magill put it, "more fun."
There have been months of deliberation, as the Ashley's team has debated the many ways they could revamp the restaurant's image without lowering its impeccable standards.
The planning for this new vision began with the hiring of James Beard award-winning chef Jol Antunes, a world-traveling French chef who has found a home in Arkansas, which he says reminds him of his home in Southern France. Antunes is a quiet man most at home in the kitchen, but he lights up when describing his food, and after tasting it last night at a special food writer event, I can certainly understand why he's so excited about the new menu.
The event last night was like a who's who of Central Arkansas foodies, and I had fun catching up with Eat Arkansas alumnus and authorKat Robinson, photographer Grav Weldon,Fancy Pants Foodieblogger Christie Ison,Little Rock Foodcast'sSteve Shuler, andArkansas Cooks'Mary Twedt among others. But apart from the camaraderie and sparkling conversation, there was something else to be excited about: the food.
Each dish we tried was well-executed and showed an attention to detail and craft that was among the best I've ever seen. Of particular note was a dish of seared scallops with potato gnocchi, artichokes, and sundried tomatoes, which featured scallops that the hotel brings in still alive to avoid the decrease in quality that comes from getting the shellfish frozen. The scallop was tender and sweet, seared just to the point where the natural sugars caramelized, and the tart, savory tomatoes made for a perfect counter-balance to the delicate morsel of shellfish. This dish was followed by what I consider the highlight of the night: a braised Berkshire pork cheek with truffle that was meltingly tender and deeply satisfying. Antunes' dishes are simple, but that makes their excellence that much more impressive, because each ingredient must speak for itself or the whole structure will fall apart.
Dessert was also memorable, and Antunes' history as a pastry chef was apparent in each dish. A raspberry cheesecake with coconut sorbet was the perfect balance of fruit, tangy mascarpone cheese, and sweet, cold sorbet. The chocolate lovers in the room swooned over a decadent chocolate souffle with vanilla chantilly, served warm with a crispy outer shell that gave way to a creamy, molten middle that was tempered by the cool vanilla cream. As a preview of things to come, this gave us all high hopes for the future of Ashley's under Antunes' guidance, which is sure to continue and grow Ashley's reputation as the go-to restaurant in Little Rock for excellent food.
Ashley's will close on May 2 for remodeling of both the dining room and the kitchen, a project that Magill said should take around two months, and result in a restaurant that will bear a new name (although no one would tell us what that name would be). In addition to updating the decor and feel of the dining area, the remodel will also turn the kitchen into a more efficient work space, while adding new banquet and bakery facilities that will expand what the restaurant is able to offer. It's sad that we'll be without one of our premier restaurants for a few weeks, but if last night's dinner is any indication of what is to come, I can assure you all that it will be worth the wait.

Health and safety officials were alerted after a shocked passer-by took this picture of a man balanced on the roof
A roofing firm has been fined thousands after they allowed a man to jet wash a steeply-sloping house roof without any safety measures in place.
The prosecution came after a concerned member of the public snapped the picture showing a man standing halfway down the sloping roof using a jet washer to clear moss and debris.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) were alerted to the dangerous work and an inspector visited the house later the same day.
The organisation immediately banned workers from IQ Roofing Solutions from carrying out further work at the site in Tyldesley, Wigan until scaffolding had been put in place.
Trafford magistrates court heard that the firms managing director Stuart Bell had visited the site on the morning the picture was taken and knew scaffolding was not in place.
The company also failed to provide proof of Employers Liability Insurance a requirement under UK law which allows workers to claim compensation if they suffer a workplace injury.
The court heard that the company had previously been served with a Prohibition Notice in 2011 relating to unsafe roof work.
IQ Roofing Solutions pleaded guilty to two breaches of the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and one breach of the Employers Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969.
The company, of Nelson Street in Tyldesley, was fined 3,000 and ordered to pay 2,000 prosecution costs.

KPOST Company posted today a new blog about trucking regulations imposed by The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that will affect multiple industries in many ways. In Commercial Roofing Costs are on the Rise, KPOST details how these new trucking regulations are expected to affect any industry utilizing trucking as a method of transportation, including roofing.
The federal government, in its divine wisdom, implemented a safety program for trucking that called for a weekly cut of 15 hours of drive time, said Steve Little, KPOST Company president in a recent KPOST Company blog post. Couple that with the 15% decline in available truckers, and we have 30% less availability of trucking. That hurts everyone.
According to Little, these regulatory changes will take up critical time and slow down the delivery process for the receiving and shipping of materials. This slows down a vendors ability to react quickly to customers and ultimately it, negatively impacts the bottom line.
Some product manufacturers have already begun reacting to the change. In attempts to shorten the distance for deliveries many manufacturers are building regional distribution facilities in hopes of saving money and time.
Obviously having to build new facilities costs money, and that will be passed on to the consumer. While these regional facilities may make up some of the time delay, this solution will not alleviate cost increases, said Little.
Although cost is a major aspect that will be impacted by regulatory changes, there are also major changes expected in the ways in which construction companies conduct business. More expectations and insights on the affects of trucking regulation changes from KPOST Company are available via the Latest News section of their company website.

Connecticut consumers seeking a construction firm offering safe, responsible, eco-conscious products, installation and waste stream management have a new option in Connecticut: West Hartford Windows, LLC
"West Hartford Windows is a refreshing new entrant to a crowded remodeling market that needs better accountability and trust" says George Porter, the company's president. Intelligent consumers want contractors to be a trusted advisor; to know the decisions they make will provide value and result in a safe, beautiful and ecologically responsible solution.
West Hartford Windows has teamed up with Energy PRZ of Brookfield, a nationally recognized BPI accredited energy assessment firm that provides Home Energy Solutions (HES) assessments. The HES program, supported by Energize CT, is funded by a small charge on customers electric and natural gas bills. All for a $75 or $99 co-pay a customer will receive over $1,250 worth of same day services and can save an average of $200 a year or more on their energy bills. (Program availability and price is subject to change).
Joe Campanella, architect and owner of Design Alliance, LLC of West Hartford, is one of West Hartford Windows' first satisfied customers. Joe and his wife chose to upgrade their 1923 colonial-style home with twenty-four Marvin Integrity windows with wood interior finishes to match existing oak woodwork. The installation left the interior and exterior trim intact, which simplified the job and saved cost. "West Hartford Windows offered a great price and followed through with exceptional service. Every new window is foam-sealed, installed according to manufacturer's specifications, looks as good as the original, and no longer needs the protection of a storm window. We are very pleased with the results, and when the West Hartford Window team finished (in just two days), the house was cleaner than when they began!"
West Hartford Windows is Connecticut's Replacement window specialist, based in West Hartford, serving all Connecticut communities. The Grand Opening for West Hartford Windows, LLC is May 1. The company plans to open a showroom in West Hartford later this year.

Orange County kitchen remodeling company, Professional Builders, now offers design services to help homeowners put the pieces of the puzzle together for a completed kitchen update. Many homeowners may have some ideas as to what aspects of a newly remodeled kitchen design that they are looking for, but they may not understand what to do with those ideas, and wonder how much the kitchen remodeling cost would be.
Modernizing the kitchen helps homeowners increase the value of their homes. While it does cost money to pay the right kitchen remodelers in Orange County, much of the cost is recovered through increased home value. Professional Builders qualified and experienced remodeling company can make the most of existing space for increased function and efficiency. This is especially important during a small kitchen remodel where limited space may reduce the amount of storage and movement in the room. In these cases, the remodeling company can utilize space all the way to the ceiling with designs that are not always considered in larger kitchen spaces. With smaller kitchens, the homeowner may also be able to afford more quality materials because less material is needed to fill the space, such as a shorter countertop.
Making the most out of the given space can be a challenge no matter how small or large the available space. Choosing materials and appliance surfaces that look good together as well as having the right design to make food preparation and cooking easier takes knowledge and experience. Professional Builders Kitchen Remodeling Orange County offers that experience.
Professional Builders can help homeowners remodel their kitchens from the beginning design services through completion of the project. Each experienced specialist for every phase of the job is hired in-house for continuity and smooth transitions from one phase to the next. Professional Builders is accredited with the BBB, so homeowners can feel confident that they will be satisfied with their newly designed kitchen.

Current Owner: Gary & Carol Arnold
Listing Price: $6,795,000
Beds: 4
Baths: 4
This entire home from the front curb to the rear fence was completely renovated since it last sold in 1999, boast the listing materials for the 2600-square-foot estate at 119 8th Street in Del Mar.
The home, originally built in 1970, sits on a double-sized lot just one house removed from the bluff tops in Olde Del Mar, a mile or so north of Torrey Pines State Reserve.
Inside, many rooms in the home are punctuated with white water ocean views, with expansive views to La Jolla and beyond. A glass entry door opens to a bright, tiled foyer. A den with fireplace along with three bedrooms and two baths are downstairs, but most of the living area, including the master suite, is situated on the second floor to better take advantage of the views.
Exposed wood-beam ceilings and hardwood flooring is prevalent throughout the property. The kitchen features the requisite granite-slab counters and high-end stainless appliances with the exception of a built-in wood paneled refrigerator and an island with prep sink and bar seating for casual dining. One of the guest baths is fitted with an antique-style claw-foot tub and distressed-wood dresser converted to use as a vanity.
Outdoor living, however, is where the property shines. The yard carries a tropical theme from the gated entry with custom brick drive and stone walkway to the backyard, where the centerpiece is what the listing office describes as San Diegos Pool of the Year.
