New Droplet Sprinkler System Leverages Advanced Embedded Processing to Cut Household Water Consumption in Half
IRVINE, Calif. Broadcom Corporation (NASDAQ: BRCM), a global innovation leader in semiconductor solutions for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its low-power applications processor is the technology behind an innovative new product designed to dramatically reduce water consumption. The Droplet Robotic Sprinkler leverages real-time data from more than 10,000 weather stations, millions of square miles of soil samples and comprehensive plant biological information to make intelligent decisions on when, where and how much water to deliver. Broadcom's cost-optimized, low-power BCM2835 provided the processing performance and low power required to deliver this industry first innovation. For more news, visit Broadcom's Newsroom.
With water rates doubling in the US and a serious drought in many areas, consumers are seeking ways to conserve water and reduce out-of-pocket expenses. Easily configured via Wi-Fi on any mobile device, Droplet can cut overall household water use in half, while reducing sprinkler system consumption up to 90 percent. In addition to substantial consumer cost savings, each sprinkler system has the potential to save thousands of gallons of fresh water per year. Enabled by Broadcom's low-power, single-chip media processor, Droplet also dramatically reduces energy costs, consuming on average just 30 cents per month in electricity.
"Droplet is the world's first smart sprinkler system that combines the latest technology in robotics, cloud computing and connected services to transform the way sprinkler systems function. Being first-to-market was a critical requirement and provides a significant advantage in the consumer market," said Steve Fernholz, Droplet Founder and Chief Executive Officer. "Broadcom's single-chip solution provided the intelligence and straightforward development platform we needed to get to market quickly with an innovative product that will ultimately benefit consumers and the environment alike."
The evolution of the Internet of Things (IoT) is driving significant growth and opportunities in a variety of end markets segments and analysts expect the home automation market to reach $16.4B by 2019(2) as consumer demand for automated control of the home continues to rise. Broadcom's single-chip solutions provide leading IoT innovators with the advanced embedded ecosystem needed to significantly reduce time-to-market while lowering overall system cost and power consumption.
"The Droplet Robotic Sprinkler is a prime example of how our low power solutions are inspiring innovation in a broad spectrum of products and market segments," said Leo Azevedo, Broadcom Associate Product Line Director, Mobile & Wireless Group. "Our low-cost, highly integrated, power-efficient chips and open source software provide the embedded community with the low-power profile and ease-of use needed to get to market quickly."
Key Features: Droplet Robotic Sprinkler
-- Combination water timer, smart controller and targeted sprinkler head -- Easy to set up and manage via smartphone, tablet or laptop -- Advanced logic leverages real-time weather data, soil information and plant species data
Key Features: Broadcom BCM2835 Applications Processor
-- Optimized for use in mobile and embedded applications -- Low power design with dual-core VideoCore IV multimedia co-processor -- Simplified development enabled through open source community software

"This building was built in 1969 and the codes in 1969, at that time, didn't dictate that that would have to happen," said Jack Mlnarik, City of Oconto Fire Chief. The school was also grandfathered into not having to keep up with other fire code changes, including installing a smoke detector in the bathroom. And while the school faces millions of dollars worth of damages and repairs, getting a sprinkler system isn't part of that cost. "What they're going to do is restore it back to the 1969 building plans," said Mlnarik. "When you do that then you just have to restore it to what the plans were at that time." The school district says student safety is a top-priority and will look into getting a sprinkler system in the future. "That's one of the things that i think our school district will look at now during this renovation," said Dr. Sara Croney, Oconto Unified School District Superintendent. "Is that something we need to add into a referendum because it's a half a million dollars." A previously planned referendum was scheduled for review at Monday's school board meeting, but officials will now look at adding the cost of a sprinkler system to that referendum first.

Through the Great Lakes Sustainability Fund (GLSF), the Government of Canada supports projects to clean up each of Canadas 14 remaining Areas of Concern or degraded areas within the Great Lakes Basin.
Since 1989, the GLSF has contributed approximately $110 million to more than 900 partnered projects to improve water quality in these areas. In 2013-2014, the GLSF provided $1.88 million for 31 projects. This investment leveraged a minimum of $3.76 million from other partners towards these projects, ensuring a total investment of at least $5.64 million.
Areas of Concern have been designated by the Governments of Canada and the United States under the Canada-United States Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. Of the 17 Areas of Concern identified on the Canadian side of the Great Lakes, three have been restored. In a further two, we have completed remedial actions and are monitoring environmental recovery prior to removing these sites from the list. In all other Canadian Areas of Concern, actions to restore water quality and ecosystem health are well advanced.
Environmental quality restored and officially removed from the bi-national list of Areas of Concern Severn Sound Collingwood Harbour Wheatley Harbour
All actions to restore environmental quality have been completed and monitoring to confirm restoration is in progress. Spanish Harbour Jackfish Bay
Thunder Bay Nipigon Bay Peninsula Harbour Hamilton Harbour Toronto and Region Port Hope Harbour Bay of Quinte

STUART A Palm Beach-based Mexican restaurant hopes to serve its signature margaritas and tacos in the old Rookies building by the end of the year.
Officials with Cabo Flats Cantina & Tequila Bar announced Wednesday the company will open its third location in the historic building near the foot of the Roosevelt Bridge.
Weve had a lot of people from Stuart and the Treasure Coast that have been coming to our Palm Beach Gardens location for four years now, said Adam Robin, Cabo Flats director of operations. It is our pleasure now to open this new Cabo Flats in their backyard and make our famous margaritas and fresh food available to more of the Treasure Coast.
The original Cabo Flats opened in 2009 at Downtown at the Gardens in Palm Beach Gardens and a Delray Beach location opened in 2013.
Robin said the Stuart restaurant could open in November or December in the old Rookies building built in 1926 as the Rob Roy Hotel. He said the company has plans to continue expanding and could have five locations across the state by the end of 2015.
Hog Snappers Shack and Sushi, a popular Tequesta-based restaurant, is under construction next door near at the site of the former Bubbas Fish Camp. Hog Snappers is expected to open in mid-August.
Jeff Hardin, president of Straticon Construction Services, and with his wife, Christine, bought the 1.34-acre site containing the former Rookies and Bubbas in February 2013.
Rookies and Bubbas have been closed and vacant for about 10 years and were considered an eyesore near the south foot of the Roosevelt Bridge.
