Land deal clears way for Anketell Port

Aboriginal land owners have signed a $20 million deal with the West Australian government, paving the way for the development of a new port and iron ore export route from the Pilbara.

Under the deal, more than 4000 hectares of Ngarluma traditional land 30 kilometres north-east of Karratha will be transformed into a multi-user deepwater port and industrial area expected to move more than 350 million tonnes of iron ore a year.

Coal miner Aquila Resources and American Metals and Coal International want to built the Anketell Port to export iron ore from its planned West Pilbara venture.

The development will offer an alternative export route to Port Hedland and Cape Lambert, which are currently overcrowded, and the federal government expects construction to create more than 4000 jobs.

The Ngarluma Aboriginal Corporation, which represents the original inhabitants of coastal areas around Roebourne, will receive $20 million over nine years under a deal signed this week.

NAC CEO said the development would provide community infrastructure and create jobs for the Ngarluma people.

"The Ngarluma people have negotiated with the state in good faith, recognising the need to provide access for the development of a new port at Anketell, while making our case of the need to maintain our connection to our land, waterways, rivers and seas," NAC chief executive Paul Stenson said.

But waters at the proposed port, which was given environmental approval last year, are home to threatened and migratory species including the endangered blue whale and loggerhead and leatherback turtles.

Designer adds luxe ladys touch to former East Village man cave

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

When Kerry Dempsey bought her 700-square-foot studio co-op on East 11th Street and Broadway back in 2003, she walked into an abandoned man cave. The guy who was here built a soundproof studio where he could play drums, and clip lights with wires were dangling everywhere, recalls Dempsey, who works in business development for a hedge fund.

But she saw the homes potential: 14-foot ceilings, a cozy loft bedroom and four huge windows with an inspiring view of Grace Church and the old St. Denis Hotel (now office building) across the street a scene that has remained surprisingly unchanged.

I loved the building and the location this specific apartment was so light and airy and I fell in love with the windows, says Dempsey, 43, who snatched it up for under $400,000. The padded drum cell was removed by the seller, and Dempsey hired professionals to strip the floors, re-tile the bathroom, update the kitchen and create a little office nook that could be concealed behind sliding translucent panels.

But theres only so much you can do without an interior designers expert eye. After seven or eight years here, I felt like the apartment needed a facelift, she says. You know, a little Botox.

So Dempsey went online and, after perusing a few different professional interior design websites, was drawn to the work of NYC-based interior designer Brendan Kwinter-Schwartz, the principal and owner of Kwinter & Company. I liked her balance of clean design that isnt too modern, explains Dempsey. All of her rooms are designed to be warm and livable.

Dempsey is, one could say, a classic New York City woman: confident, attractive, smart, with an incredible shoe collection. She travels often for her job and has only about five minutes to relax before rushing off to the office or dinner with friends. She craved a place where I can come home and just plop on the couch.

Blaze destroys mobile home near MHS field

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

More than 30 firefighters battled a mobile home fire late Tuesday night attempting to keep the blazing inferno from setting adjacent structures on fire in the 500 block of Moffat Boulevard.

A man and woman living in the mobile home got out of the structure safely without any injuries. The mobile home was in a park located just south of the Manteca High School baseball diamond.

Manteca Fire Battalion Chief Kyle Shipherd said the first of multiple 911 calls came in at 9:45 p.m. He noted visibility was near zero at the fire scene with heavy black smoke and flames coming from the side of the structure. He said strong winds were fanning the blaze that threatened to jump to other nearby residences. The smoke was blown downward and stayed near the ground, he said.

The fire was knocked down and brought under control after some 30 minutes with the help of the mutual aid agencies, he added. Once the fire was out, crews remained on the scene for three hours performing salvage and overhaul operations, he said.

Shipherd estimated the loss to the structure at $80,000 with another $25,000 loss reflected in personal property contents of the mobile home. Preliminary reports as to the cause of the fire pointed to electrical wiring under the floor of the bathroom.

Manteca firefighters were aided by Ripon Consolidated Fire District, Lathrop-Manteca Fire District, Manteca District Ambulance and the Manteca Police Department.
