North Port wants to widen Price Boulevard

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NORTH PORT - As commuters head to work and students arrive at several schools in the mornings, especially North Port High and Heron Creek Middle, traffic on two-lane Price Boulevard frequently backs up.

The stop-and-go experience gets repeated after classes are dismissed and, after 5 p.m., as commuters return home.

The City Commission recently decided that widening Price will be the city's next major thoroughfare project.

Price serves as the main east-west connector between Interstate 75 and U.S. 41. It spans much of the city, serving as the conduit thousands use to reach the city's main north-south connectors between I-75 and U.S. 41, Sumter Boulevard and Toledo Blade Boulevard.

There's no other way to cut across the city without using the federal highways, former city commissioner Fred Tower said. It (widening project) definitely is needed.

Nearly 7,000 vehicles traveled daily on the stretch west of Sumter Boulevard and nearly twice that many, 13,100, relied on the segment between Sumter and Toledo Blade Boulevard, according to a 2013 survey by the Florida Department of Transportation.

The City Commission says traffic will worsen if the two-lane road is not widened to four lanes.

City officials say the 5.8-mile project, from Biscayne Drive to Toledo Blade, can be done using the existing 100 feet of right of way and without taking anyone's property.

That's the plan that makes the most sense, Mayor Jim Blucher told city administrators. ...I think we need to move forward with it.

    SETIU WETLAND, WEAVE EASY

All seven coaches start from TH Hotel and travel in a convoy, with police escorts no less, to Setiu Wetland. The 75-minute drive along coastal road is dotted with scenic views of colourful fishing boats anchored on the countrys longest beach by the South China Sea. It reminds us why fishing is an age-old tradition in Terengganu.

Setiu is also famous for its enchanting beaches, traditional fishing villages and nature, especially its wetland areas where we are heading. Here, aside from learning about the importance of mangroves, we plant more mangrove trees.

Meantime, in the shade of a make-shift tent not far from the mangroves, old women are giving a demonstration on mat weaving. Seated on the floor with their legs tucked sideways as kampung folk do, and armed with nipah, rattan and bamboo, they showed us how this was done. Most have over 10 years experience in weaving and are often commissioned to weave mats and baskets for chalets, restaurants, resorts and individual homes in Terengganu.

Besides weaving fruit baskets and floor mats, the women also show how to weave attap leaves, often used as roofing material for gazebos and beach huts.

As some members of the media struggle at their first try, these women make it look like a piece of cake.

    STOP, IM TICKLISH!

It takes about an hour to get to Gawi jetty from Kuala Terengganu. From there, we board several boats to a few attractions on Lake Kenyir, the biggest man-made lake in Southeast Asia.

Our first stop is Orchid Garden. Located on Hulu Selimbar Island, 20 minutes from the jetty, here you can find various wild orchid species and exotic hybrids of local and international species blooming in an array of colours.

We then board our boat and head for the tropical garden on Tekak Besar Island, an eco-tourism, research and development centre for diverse types of fruits tropical, wild, exotic and indigenous fruits which are close to extinction.

Increasingly, Robots of All Sizes Are Human Workmates

    - April 24, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even conventional industrial robots are becoming safer to work around, making them more likely to collaborate with humans.

Team workers: An employee at Nymann Teknik, a machine shop in Hobro, Denmark, works with a UR5 robot from Universal Robots.

Most industrial robots are far less friendly than the Roomba robot vacuum cleaner, which is safe enough to be a surprisingly popular means of feline transportation. Industrial robots often sit behind metal fences, their mechanical arms a blur of terrific speed and precision; to prevent serious injury to humans (or worse), these robots are normally shut down when anyone enters their workspace.

In recent years, however, the fences have started to disappear as a gentler breed of robot has entered the workplace and new features have made even conventional industrial robots safer to be around. This shift is altering the dynamics of labor in many factories and workshops, allowing humans and robots to work together in efficient new ways.

Human-robot collaboration is gaining an enormous amount of momentum, says Henrik Christensen, executive director of the Institute for Robotics and Intelligent Machines at Georgia Tech. In the past, robots have penetrated 10 percent of the industry. Theres still 90 percent of the industry, and thats where you need collaborative robots.

The Robotic Industries Association, a U.S. trade group, last week organized its first conference dedicated to collaborative robots, at which robot manufacturers and customers gathered to discuss the trend. Christensen was a keynote speaker.

The most prominent of the simpler, safer robots introduced in the last few years is Baxter, developed by the Boston-based startup Rethink Robotics (see This Robot Could Transform Manufacturing). Baxter, which has two arms and a cartoonish face shown on a touch-screen display, is very easy and safe to work with. To program the robot, a worker simply moves its arms through an operation to show it what to do. And should anyone get in the robots way, it will either stop or, at worst, hit the person too gently to leave a bruise. Most important, Baxter is remarkably cheap, costing just $22,000 when many conventional robots cost several hundred thousand dollars.

Another robot maker, the Danish company Universal Robots, offers small, more conventional-looking robot arms that are similarly cheap ($31,000 each), simple, and safe to operate. But these robot arms also offer greater precision and programmability, meaning they can perform complex work and either step in for a human worker or work alongside one. They can quickly be repurposed for a new job without requiring much reprogramming.

Edward Mullen, national sales manager for Universal Robots, says the company has sold around 2,500 robots since launching in 2009, and he estimates that 80 percent are running unguarded. Many of the robots have been sold to small or medium-sized companies that do not otherwise use robots. RSS Manufacturing, a company in Costa Mesa, California, that produces custom automobile and plumbing components, uses Universal Robots machines for jobs including manipulating pipes in a tube bender and producing valves on a milling machine. The companys production runs can be as short as 24 hours, so the robots have to be swapped quickly between different tasks. None of the robots are placed behind safety fences.

Theres still plenty of work thats too arduous or precise for Baxter or Universal Robots machines. But more powerful conventional robots are starting to work in closer proximity to humans, too. New sensors and software allow these machines to predict collisions and avoid them as humans go about their work.

In Illinois, A Town That's Half-Destroyed But Filled With Hope

Washington, Ill., is full of both optimistic signs and lots of construction crews as the town rebuilds after a half-mile-wide tornado devastated the area in November.

Washington is just starting to rebuild.

Much of the central Illinois town was wiped away by a half-mile-wide tornado in November. In all, 1,108 homes were destroyed or rendered uninhabitable a huge share of the housing stock in a city of 15,000.

"Early on, people were asking me how long it was going to take to rebuild the city, and I said we'll do it in a year," says Mayor Gary Manier. "That was wishful thinking."

Tornadoes typically strike the Midwest during the spring. This one touched down not long before Thanksgiving, meaning Washington lost its chance to rebuild quickly due to an unusually bitter and persistent winter.

Now, multiple home sites on some blocks are busy with workers putting up frames or nailing in walls. But building permits have yet to be pulled for more than half the affected properties.

The city last week sent homeowners a notice that they need to decide whether to rebuild, or tear down.
