Rodney Hill presents case for deanship

    - April 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

The College of Agricultures search for a new dean to replace the retiring Lester Young continues. The four candidates will participate in an open forum discussion to present his or her qualifications to faculty, staff and students.

Rodney Hill was the first of the four candidates to participate in the open forum on Tuesday.

Hill is currently the strategic adviser to the vice president for research and economic development at the University of Idaho.

He is now interested in a role in which he is able to work closely with students and faculty so that he can use his career experience to facilitate disciplinary excellence in [Cal Poly Pomona] programs, as stated in his letter of interest.

Hill feels that he is fit for the position of dean of the College of Agriculture because he can relate to students.

I know and understand Cal Poly Pomona students because I share many of their experiences, said Hill, who is a first generation college graduate.

Hill also said that he is interested in the position because he shares a lot of the same values that are evident in the College of Agricultures methods.

Some of Hills values include leading and embracing change, empowering and inspiring others, and working across boundaries.

His presentation was focused on his vision for the College of Agriculture: its strengths, the tools and resources it has that contribute to agriculture on a global landscape and faculty, staff and student success.

Hill considers the learn by doing method at CPP one of its greatest strengths because he comes from a research and policy development background.

LAKKI MARWAT: Shops and makeshift kiosks built on government land in Naurang town here were razed during an anti-encroachment drive on Tuesday.

The operation was launched after traders didnt pay heed to the notices served on them by the local administration to remove encroachments, built on both sides of the GT Road, on their own or face action.

The notices were served to shopkeepers by additional assistant commissioner Yaser Qayyum on the directives of the deputy commissioner Syed Zafar Ali Shah.

Municipal committee workers with the help of heavy machinery demolished dozens of shops and outlets built on the railway land.

Mr Qayyum asked the encroachers to remove debris within 24 hours or the administration would confiscate it. He said encroachers and land grabbers would be dealt with an iron hand.

Keynote: Yang Dongjiang interior designer, architect and assistant dean at Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts and …

    - April 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Yang Dongjiang opened this year's conference with his keynote speach

China's skyscrapers are the symbols of its newfound success

Dongjiang questions whether there will a coherent 'Chinese Dream', just as there was an American one

The seventh edition of CDN's Interior Motives China Conference has just taken place in Beijing, ahead of the world's most important motor show and in the world's largest car market. The theme of this year's event, Mobilising the new urban landscape' is extremely pertinent to anyone who has experienced the city's congestion and its air quality.

During the event's two days, the presenters explored our future relationship with the automobile, from increasing levels of autonomous drive in our cars, to the varied definitions of the word luxury, and how that impacts on customer expectations right across the globe.

The Interior Motives conference is all about offering fresh perspectives on the future challenges of car design, hence why it was fitting that the opening keynote be delivered by Yang Dongjiang, an interior designer, architect and assistant dean at Tsinghua University's Academy of Arts and Design.

The keynote documented the recent rapid changes that have characterised architectural development in China, and the complex position that has placed its designers in.

It's no secret that the pace of change in China been extremely rapid, but the irrational obsession with building huge skyscrapers as a visual representation of the nation's new-found success, plus the irrational way in which cars are designed here shows, says Yang, the consequence of the fact that China has been closed for too long.

Add in China's subsequent rapid absorption of international ideas of design, and the resulting blend, understandably, lacks coherence for now. But how will the designers of China's future, both at home and abroad, bring about a distinct, cogent design identity?

To explore how that might happen, the first session of this year's event followed the title theme of this year's conference.

Two charged with stealing copper from vacant Pittsfield home

    - April 23, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

PITTSFIELD -- Two men were held overnight after being charged with breaking into a vacant home and stealing copper pipes and wires.

Jarrod Stanton, 35, of East Street, and Steven Winters, 31, of Hawthorne Avenue, were arrested by Pittsfield police on Monday afternoon after police received a report of two men walking in the vicinity of West Union and John streets with copper wire in hand and a backpack.

When police went to the abandoned home the two had allegedly been seen leaving, authorities discovered the entire building "in disarray," according to the police report. Copper pipes and wiring from every outlet, electrical box and faucet were missing, according to police.

Police located the two men, based on a matching description, at a local scrap yard. Police interviewed Winters, who had a 12-inch pry bar on him, along with a screwdriver, flashlight and a dirty hat. Winters told police he was waiting for his friend at the scrap yard.

Stanton was stopped by police after leaving the scrap yard. He allegedly told police that he had just sold copper wire that he picked up at a previous job for $22.

Stanton and Winters were both arraigned in Central Berkshire District Court on Monday in front of Judge Fredric Rutberg. They pleaded not guilty to charges of breaking and entering into a building, larceny, and possession of burglary tools. Rutberg set bail at $250 on the charges pending a future court date.
