A group of architects are donating their services to make the homes of marathon bombing survivors more accessible.
Nearly 100 architects and 10 consultants have signed up to help through an effort called Renovate for Recovery, working with engineers, carpenters, designers and dozens of other volunteers to complete one project in New Hampshire, with more than a half dozen others in the works.
After the bombings, survivors were overwhelmed, physically and emotionally, so their homes were on the back burner, said Dawn Guarriello of the Design Partnership of Cambridge. But people dont have to be an amputee to take advantage of this. No injury is too small.
Survivors apply for modifications to their homes or businesses through a Department of Public Safety initiative called the Boston Survivors Accessibility Alliance, which assesses requests on a case-by-case basis, said Terrel Harris, a spokesman for the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.
Those getting help dont need to worry about anything, Harris said. Its all done free.
Although most of the projects so far have called for redesigning kitchens and bathrooms or installing lifts or elevators, volunteers can modify homes in a variety of other ways, including replacing door knobs with handles for people who sustained neurological problems such as gripping, or installing smoke detectors with strobe lights for those who lost some or all of their hearing, Guarriello said.
Our biggest need right now is donated materials like garage doors, sinks and tiles, hopefully through local suppliers, she said. We want to open peoples eyes to different ways of thinking about accessibility.
Michael McHugh, a member of the Boston Society of Architects and chairman of Architecture for Humanity Boston, began working with Karen Rand, who lost her leg from the knee down.
Rand lives in a third-floor apartment in Somerville. So McHugh and the firm he works for, Davis Square Architects, designed a new handrail and sturdier steps, which were built by Ask This Old House for a segment of the TV show.
To allow Rand to sit outside in nice weather, McHugh and his firm also designed a new roof deck, which was built by S+H Construction in Cambridge.

It was one image - an artist's rendering of the Travellers Building reimagined for the Regina Farmers' Market - but it sparked a discussion that even surprised the designer.
"It really has generated a buzz and got people thinking design, urbanism, architecture, which is fantastic," said Brad Pickard, the architect behind the mock-up. "And who knows where it goes? The intent was just to throw an idea out there."
The idea is for a permanent home for the popular but vagabond city market in a 1929 heritage building that is currently on sale on Broad Street, between 11th and 12th avenues. Pickard saw the conversion of the Storey and Van Egmond brick creation as a way support local merchants, build community, and serve as a positive example of revitalization in the Heritage neighbourhood.
The rendering is one of a handful of ideas by Open, a collective of five young Saskatchewan architects who blog about design. A break-off group, which includes Pickard, has recently created a more public forum to discuss this topic: Regina Advocates for Design (RAD).
"Our mission is to advocate for the importance of design and innovation in Regina's built environment," said Pickard, an intern architect with P3Architecture.
So far the group's activities have been confined to design-oriented films shown monthly at the Artful Dodger Cafe, and some guest lectures. Pickard said RAD's intention is to provide a forum for open dialogue about Regina's esthetic future, and to encourage residents to look at their city with a design lens.
RAD was formed within the context of a growing and evolving Regina, which is experiencing a changing urban environment and demographic as a result, said Pickard.
The group hopes that evolution takes into account sustainability and complete communities - that is, neighbourhoods amenable to pedestrians, cyclists, transit users and cars. Pickard looks to Halifax, where he once lived, Saskatoon and Winnipeg as some cities that could serve as design examples for Regina.
"I think we're lucky with Regina in that our downtown core and the outlying neighbourhoods actually have really good bones in terms of their streets," said Pickard, adding that the Community Plan shows that the city is moving in the right direction with its planning.
Neither RAD nor Open are active in petitioning the city or contractors with their design ideas, but they do plan on expanding their reach through events and blogging.

The city of St. Francis plans to remodel its fire department headquarters this summer. The main goal is to expand its training room to allow for more productive and efficient training of staff.
Right now, when we have a full-size group in training, were basically sitting on top of each other, said St. Francis Fire Chief Dean Kapler.
For many years, the fire station housed both the fire and police departments. The police department moved out of the building when the citys new police and public works facility opened in late 2012, freeing up much-needed space for the fire department. This remodeling project is part of the citys 2014 capital improvement plan. It will also improve the space from which Allinas ambulance service dispatches.
Kapler emphasized that the remodeling project does not involve expanding the building; the fire stations footprint will stay the same.
The fire station is actually comprised of three separately constructed units connected together, the first portion of which was built in 1975. The fact that there are three separate components does present some challenges in the remodeling project, said Kapler.
The St. Francis City Council on April 7 authorized the creation of architectural drawings for the building. Once those are completed, the city will solicit bids for the project. The project cost is estimated at approximately $100,000 and should be completed in 2014.
The remodeling project will only address the buildings interior, said Kapler. The buildings exterior was upgraded last summer, with a new roof and exterior paint.
This is going to be a great improvement to the building, said Kapler. We train a lot, and this will help make that training more productive and efficient.

OutKast will headline the 2014 BET Experience, the three-day music festival scheduled for June in downtown Los Angeles.
Black Entertainment Television is expected to make an official announcement Monday that the Atlanta duo will topline the festivals rap-heavy showcase, which includes Rick Ross, ASAP Rocky and DJ Khaled.
When BET announced in March the first set of performers for the festival, which will be in its second year, the network teased a very special hip-hop reunion you wont want to miss.
RELATED: The inside story on OutKast
That reunion is OutKast, which recently ended a seven-year hiatus with a headlining slot at the Coachella Valley Music and Art Festival this month.

Gigs at more than 40 festivals include Governors Ball in New York, Sasquatch in Washington state, Drakes OVO Fest in Toronto, Wireless Festival in London and now the BET Experience at L.A. Live.
This year's festival, scheduled for June 27-29, will again include concerts, wellness seminars, celebrity panels, exhibits and a fan expo at multiple venues at L.A. Live. It's anchored by BETs annual award spectacle.
R&B crooner Maxwell and songstresses Jill Scott, Marsha Ambrosius and American Idol winner Candice Glover will kick off the festival June 27 at Staples Center.
