Texas Eco Home Uses Milgard Windows and Patio Doors

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) April 18, 2014

The newly completed Village Park Eco Home will open to the public for tours beginning this weekend, showcasing energy efficient and high-performance products including Milgard windows and patio doors.

The Contemporary Hill Country style residence is a certified Department of Energy Challenge Home, ENERGY STAR home and Green Built Texas Home. During the guided tour, visitors will learn about the vision and building science behind the net zero-energy house.

Thirty-four Tuscany Series vinyl windows and four Ultra Series fiberglass French doors were installed, and reflect Milgards commitment to energy efficiency as all windows exceed ENERGY STAR Version 3 requirements.

Milgard windows and patio doors were chosen not only because of the superior energy efficiency but also the Full Lifetime Warranty coverage, ensuring the homeowner will have high performance windows for as long as they own the home.

The first priority was to make the home as energy efficient as possible, said Chris Miles, Eco Home Project Senior Advisor and House Talk Today Radio host. For windows and patio doors, we chose Milgard vinyl windows. Milgard offered a very high performance product that exceeded our expectations especially when it came our third party testing. I have used wood clad, composite, and fiberglass [of other brands], but none compared to the excellence of the Milgard product.

Atkins Design Group created the layout for the 3,752 square foot house. Sustainable and recycled materials were used throughout for minimal environmental impact. Barbara Gilbert Interiors designed the interior spaces, using as many eco-friendly items as possible.

The Village Park Eco Home will feature Open House tours on weekends until May 11th. Visitors will have the opportunity to talk with many of the manufacturers about the products inside the home.

Milgard Certified Dealers will be present at every tour to answer questions about the high performance windows and patio doors as well as the Milgard Full Lifetime Warranty. Event attendees will be eligible for a special promotion.

Downtown businesses open doors for extra hours for Opening Day

EL PASO, Texas--If you build it, they will come. At least, that's what dozens of downtown businesses are banking on. The tight knit group of establishments is hoping their investment and commitment to downtown revitalization pays off once the Chihuahua crowds descend on Southwest University Park on April 28th.

When those crowds come, dozens of downtown businesses will have their doors open, waiting for their arrival.

"All of these business owners, these stakeholders, they are very much invested in this, not just because it's a great idea and it's great to bring people downtown but they are really, it's very personal to them. They have families. They have great expectations for it," said Rudy Vasquez the marketing communications director for the Downtown Management District. Thursday, they revealed their starting day roster, a line-up of businesses that will be going into extra innings with extended hours on Opening Day. Including: SoHo Cocktail Lounge, Sparrow's Spirits and Pies, Anson 11 and Tabla.

El Paso Chihuahuas game days guide

But beyond the first game, hours will be up in the air.

"That will vary from business to business. For every other game, they'll have to look at their staff and their response," said Vasquez. Almost 30 bars and restaurants plan to keep their doors open longer for the El Paso Chihuahua's debut and maybe for the games that follow. As it stands, public transportation options before and after the game are limited. Sun Metro's park and ride will drop off fans about an hour before the game and pick them up an hour after. "I think looking at that situation we have to remember there are hundreds of games that are going to happen, with that in mind, that might be the case for one game, you can go, enjoy the game, see what that experience is like and go home and you'll have other options other nights, maybe plan differently," said Vasquez. Sun Metro said if people want to get downtown even earlier they can opt for one of their regular routes.

But the transportation options for post-game are minimal. On its regular routes, Sun Metro departs downtown by about 10:15 p.m. Meaning, those who want to stay out for a night on the town will either have to cab it or drive. "Right now this is the options that are available to us think out of this it will evolve so there will be more options," said Vasquez. The Union Plaza area will feature a 'fun zone' for Opening Day, they'll be cornering off streets, serving food on the patio and there will be activities for kids. "I think there's a stigma that it's kind of like a club sector that's completely not the case there's great family activities," said Vasquez.

Lights On, Doors Open, At North Light

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Portland, Oregon (PRWEB) April 18, 2014

On the heels of their 10th anniversary in business together, Hope Beraka and Christopher Gutierrez are ready to present their latest venture, North Light (3746 N. Mississippi Ave.). The restaurant and bar, which will serve up sophisticated comfort food and craft cocktails with a twist, opens its doors to the public Friday, April 18.

In envisioning what is destined to be a neighborhood hub in the thriving Mississippi district, Beraka and Gutierrez took a cue from their popular SE lounge, Night Light. For a decade now weve welcomed anyone and everyone to enjoy inspired food and drink without the expense or attitude that can sometimes accompany it, Beraka says. North Light is an evolution of that commitment: a back-to-basics, sincere, service-driven experience.

Executive Chef Lyle Josts New American fare reflects a classic, no-fuss approach. Jost, whose Portland career includes tenures at Mint/820, Masu, and Fiddleheads, expands upon his current duties in the Night Light kitchen with an accessible mix of starters, salads and entrees that celebrate the Pacific Northwest spirit. Josts menu will be bolstered by an original cocktail menu from Chris Bollenbacher, and house-baked pastries and bread from chef Julianne Richardson, formerly of Wildwood. In addition to dinner and late night offerings, North Light will bring the same care and attention to their weekend brunch service.

Inviting and thoughtful, the dcor echoes the menu. Think an austere nod to mid-1970s glam, without the kitsch, Beraka quips of its aesthetic. Complementing the interior is a patio that seats 50 comfortably. As with Chef Josts menu, materials are sourced locally and sustainably whenever possible: modular wooden planter benches have been repurposed from the locations previous business and provide a warm, communal space for people-watching on Mississippi.

According to Gutierrez, Simplicity and sophistication arent mutually exclusive. Thats North Lightexcellence without airs.

    About North Light:

Located in the heart of the vibrant Mississippi shopping district, North Light serves up a sophisticated twist on comfort food and drink. A signature New American menu appeals to discriminating palates in search of cuisine that is both refined and casual. Working with local purveyors for a distinctively Portland experience, proprietors Christopher Gutierrez and Hope Beraka are proud to present their latest neighborhood go-to spot one that bucks pretense with contemporary flair, and a focus on the guest experience.

North Light is located at 3746 N. Mississippi Ave. Dinner will be served daily starting April 18th at 5 p.m., with Happy Hour at 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.-midnight. Wweekend brunch will be served 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday starting April 26th. Learn more online at northlightpdx.com, or call 503-477-7079.

Lowe's Settles EPA Lead Paint Violations By Its Contractors

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Apr 17, 2014 5:00pm

WASHINGTON Home improvement giant Lowes Companies Inc. has agreed to pay $500,000 after federal investigators found its home renovation contractors in nine states had violated safety standards for lead paint. The retail chain was also unable to provide documentation proving some contractors employed by the company were certified to work with the toxic substance, the Environmental Protection Agency and Justice Department said today.

The investigation by the EPA stemmed from tips and complaints from homeowners who had used Lowes renovation contractors. In reviews of company records the government found contractors had not used EPA-approved lead-test kits on projects, or lacked proper training to work with the hazardous element known to cause developmental problems in children and kidney and cardiovascular illness in adults.

The EPA also found contractors had failed to properly clean and contain work areas in three homes, although the agency emphasized they had not found any direct cases of bodily harm in the course of their investigation. The punishment sought against Lowes was more cautionary, they said. Officials also stated the violations were not company-wide, but isolated to certain brick-and-mortar stores discovered in their investigation.

This is not to send an alarm signal that people who have had work repairs done should be alarmed about this, Acting Assistant Attorney General Robert Dreher said in a conference call with reporters today.

EPA Assistant Administrator Cynthia Giles said it sent a clear message to companies to comply with the toxic materials standard.

Lowes is taking responsibility for the actions of the firms it hires, and EPA expects other contractors to do the same, she said.

The officials pointed homeowners to the EPA website for fact sheets on protective measures and red flags to watch out for when working with lead-based materials.

Lowes says they have always sought to comply with the EPAs Lead-Based Paint Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule standards since they were enacted in 2008, and have resolved all issues alleged by the EPA.

Lowes hires thousands of independent, third-party contractors and the EPA identified only a few who failed to meet certain record keeping or work practice requirements regarding lead-based paint, a Lowes spokesperson told ABC News. There have never been any reports of lead-based paint health issues associated with any projects completed by Lowes contractors.

Lowes Settles with EPA Over Lead Pollution Violations During Home Renovations

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Washington DC - infoZine - Lowes Home Centers has agreed to implement a comprehensive, corporate-wide compliance program at its over 1,700 stores nationwide to ensure that the contractors it hires to perform work minimize lead dust from home renovation activities, as required by the federal Lead Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule. The company will also pay a $500,000 civil penalty, which is the largest ever for violations of the RRP Rule.

The settlement stems from violations, discovered by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) inspectors, of the RRP Rules recordkeeping and work practice standards at private homes that had been renovated by Lowes contractors. EPA enforces the RRP and other lead rules to protect children and others who are vulnerable to exposure to lead dust that can cause lead poisoning.

The government complaint alleged that Lowes failed to provide documentation showing that specific contractors had been certified by EPA, had been properly trained, had used lead-safe work practices, or had correctly used EPA-approved lead test kits at renovation sites. Additionally, EPAs investigation found that Lowes had also failed to ensure that work areas had been properly contained and cleaned during renovations at three homes. EPAs investigation was prompted by tips and complaints submitted by the public.

In addition to the civil penalty, Lowes must implement a comprehensive compliance program to ensure that the contractors it hires to perform work for its customers comply with the RRP Rule during renovations of any child-occupied facilities, such as day-care centers and pre-schools, and any housing that was built before 1978. For these projects, Lowes must contract with only EPA-certified renovators, ensure they maintain certification, and ensure they use lead safe work practices checklists during renovations. In addition, Lowes must suspend anyone that is not operating in compliance with the rule, investigate all reports of potential noncompliance, and ensure that any violations are corrected.

The RRP Rule, which implements the federal Toxic Substances Control Act, is intended to ensure that owners and occupants of housing built before 1978, as well as any child-occupied facilities, receive information on lead-based paint hazards before renovations begin, that individuals performing such renovations are properly trained and certified by EPA, and follow specific work practices to reduce the potential for lead-based paint exposure. Home improvement companies such as Lowes that contract with renovators to perform renovation work for their customers must ensure that those contractors comply with all of the requirements of the RRP Rule.
