VIDEO | Volunteers blitz build replacement home for Upper Yoder man

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

JOHNSTOWN One week ago, Joey Varmecky had almost nothing.

In October, a flue fire claimed his Swank Street home. That night, Varmecky, a deaf and partially blind man who doesnt speak, showed up on the doorstep of his friends home. His feet were covered only by a pair of stockings.

On Thursday afternoon, the Upper Yoder Township man was handed a set of keys to a new home.

More than 100 volunteers took part in the project coordinated by Beaver County-based Hosanna Industries Inc., a faith-based nonprofit that rehabilitates, repairs and builds homes for the needy across southwestern Pennsylvania.

We heard about this shortly after the fire in the fall, said Amanda Becker, a mission worker for Hosanna. So, we started putting some feelers out as far as volunteers and funding.

Once money and helping hands were in place, Varmeckys new abode came together in four days. Hosanna Industries calls it a blitz build.

Im kind of at the point of exhaustion, Becker said with a smile just after the ceremony.

On average, Becker said, Hosanna rehabs and repairs around 150 houses and a handful of full builds per year.

Varmeckys new home was Hosannas first blitz build of 2014, she said.

I like it two thumbs up, said Varmecky while touring the basement.

    Chester facilities get state funds

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Infrastructure improvements at two Chester facilities will be covered by state funds.

Gov. Pat Quinn announced $4.4 million Thursday to replace the roofing system at Chester Mental Health Center and to construct a cold storage building at Menard Correctional Center in Chester.

The money comes from the Illinois Jobs Now! construction program.

Both projects will be managed by the Illinois Capital Development Board.

The $1,266,950 Menard Correctional Center project involves constructing a new, 10,000 square foot pre-engineered cold storage structure adjacent to an existing warehouse.

The successful bidders include general construction, Fager-McGee Commercial Construction, Inc. of Murphysboro, $1,158,000; and electrical, M.C. Electric, Inc. of Red Bud, $108,950. This latest efficient replacement at Menard Correctional Center (MCC) joins the more than 70% of all buildings there which are not original (1878) construction.

The roofing system at the Chester Mental Health Center, a Department of Human Services facility, will be replaced for $3,221,339 by Joiner Sheet Metal & Roofing, Inc. of Greenville.

Roof project highlights need for county facilities plan

    - April 19, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

GENEVA Kane County leaders need to better determine what they want to do regarding facility improvements.

That was the message from Administration Committee Chairman Ron Ford, D-Aurora, Thursday after the group decided to switch directions on a roofing project for a county building in downtown Geneva.

Staff solicited bids for a roof replacement project for 401 Campbell St. in Geneva a 1970s building just yards away from the Kane County Courthouse that is used as office space.

The lowest bid $59,850 was presented to the committee last month, but the committee held the item for a month.

County Board member Phil Lewis, R-St. Charles, said he was glad for the extra 30 days because he was able to tour the building, which, he said, is definitely in need of work.

Instead of replacing the roof, Lewis suggested the county hire an architectural firm to do a cost-benefit analysis of remodeling the one-story structure, possibly with a second story.

That would be great if we had the money to do that, said board member Theresa Barreiro, D-Aurora. Just last month, we were worried about $60,000, and now you want to redo the whole building.

Board member Drew Frasz, R-Elburn, agreed with Lewis in that he wouldnt want to invest tens of thousands of dollars in a building that might not be around long-term.

He suggested going with a third option of making $9,200 in roof repairs, which would buy the county some time to decide.

The committee directed staff to pursue that option after a motion to accept the nearly $60,000 bid failed, 3-2.
