UMSL agrees to delay demolition of Incarnate Word Convent

    - April 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NORMANDY University of Missouri-St. Louis officials have listened to neighborhood residents and preservationists who want to spare Incarnate Word Convent from demolition and offered at least a temporary reprieve for the former home of the Sisters of Charity.

Bob Samples, UMSLs associate vice chancellor for communications, said Wednesday that university officials met Monday night with residents and representatives from Incarnate Word Academy.

We indicated to them we would hold off on demolition of the old convent site and issue a request for proposals to see if individuals are interested in renovating the facility and putting it to a positive use, Samples said. We don't have a time frame for the RFP but we're working on it.

The RFP would stipulate that the buildings would have to be saved, he said.

The Sisters of Charity sold the convent to UMSL for $1.2 million in 1993, and after some years of use by the university, UMSL officials say the school no longer needs the buildings.

Dan Riley, of Bel-Nor, who started a petition drive and Facebook campaign to save it, said the community's response has been overwhelming in support of the convent.

Riley said he intends to turn over a petition with more than 1,000 names to Chancellor Thomas F. George on Thursday. On Facebook, supporters have gathered over 1,300 likes.

It's a crucial moment in our community's efforts to save these important pieces of St. Louis history and architecture and it will be the first opportunity for Chancellor George to explain the university's position and respond to the community's petition, Riley said.

The petition says the facility has been a source of pride for the Bel-Nor and Normandy communities.

The convent is an excellent example of American craftsmanship, masonry and metalwork from the early 20th century with architectural characteristics from 11th and 12th century southern France, Spain and Italy, the petition states.

Demolition begins at the Masonic Hall in Portishead

Tracey Fowler , Reporter Thursday, April 17, 2014 2:00 PM

THOUSANDS of bricks from an old Portishead building will be recycled to provide a new beach wall.

To send a link to this page to a friend, you must be logged in.

Demolition of the former Masonic Hall in Pier Road is well under way in preparation for the building of a new lifeboat station.

Contractor Andrew Scott has already completed internal demolition work and has started the bigger job of demolishing the main structure. About 3,000 bricks will be recycled on site to form a new wall access to the Royal beach.

Gavin Evans, project manager, said: We are very much aware of our neighbours and are intent on causing as little impact as possible on the local community during the work.

We now look forward to the challenge of constructing an excellent facility for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) here in Portishead.

The RNLI is building the new lifeboat station ahead of a formal adoption of The Portishead Lifeboat Trust. The charitys trustees agreed the adoption on the condition that a new home fit for purpose was in place for the lifeboat.

Bellwether plans Thursday opening for show by Los Angeles artist Andrea Longacre-White in St. Clair Superior

    - April 17, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A 1903 Carnegie Library that formerly house a community center in the St. Clair Superior neighborhood will be the setting for an innovative, three-week art installation by a rising Los Angeles artist opening with a reception Thursday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The exhibition will focus on two bodies of work by Andrea Longacre-White.

One will be an encore presentation of an installation previously shown at a gallery in New Yorks Chelsea District, in which the artist scanned images of individual sheets of the crumpled silver ceiling paper used in commercial interiors in Los Angeles, and then assembled the photos on a wall to create a disorienting, 18-foot-high vertical mural of a horizontal ceiling in all its crumpled and shiny glory.

In the second body of work, Longacre-White will install a debut selection of new images of computer scans taken from the screen of a computer pad. The artist augmented the resulting visual feedback patterns in the scanned images by running the printed sheets through a digital printer numerous times to create even more complex, abstract patterns.

Its sort of like these wild unruly confused images, she said in a telephone interview.

The Longacre-White exhibition will take place at the former Goodrich Gannett Neighborhood Center, 1368 East 55th St., in Cleveland.

The show is a project of Bellwether, an outreach arm of the Cleveland Museum of Arts Contemporary Art Society, an auxiliary group of museum supporters. Lisa Kurzner, a curatorial researcher at the museum, organized the exhibition in collaboration with Various Small Fires, a Los Angeles gallery.

Longacre-White, 33, a native of Radnor, Pa., will speak during the opening reception for her show on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Im so excited, she said. I think the project theyre doing through Bellwether is really smart, really great. Its really new work for me and to be able to show that is really exciting.

Dust your light bulbs? Throw the lint filter in the dishwasher? Clean like never beforebut should have been doing all alongwith these surprising tips.

1.Brightenup theroom with a quick wipedown.

Dont forget about your light bulbs when spring cleaning. According to professional organizer and author Donna Smallin Kuper, a dirty bulb emits 20 percent less light than a clean one. To get your light bulbs shining their brightest, wipe t hem down with a dampened microfiber cloth when turned off, Kuper says.

    2.Make glassshine bynotusing cleaner.

Have smudges on your mirrors, windows or stainless steel appliances? Forget paper towels, as they will leave behind lint, streaks and a cloudy film. Instead, Kuper swears by using microfiber cloths and water. Just spritz and wipe. For best results, choose a microfiber cloth designed for glass. It's a finer weave than larger microfiber cloths, she explains. To clean the cloth afterward, toss in the washing machinesans fabric softenerand air dry.

3.Keep carpet cleaner by moving in slow motion.
