My tree, my right to chop it down

    - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Noticed, late on Friday afternoon: 1) several tree removal trucks near a New Westminster apartment building, the intent clearly that of the annihilation of a copse of mature trees; and 2) a chainsaw-wielding man at a Washington state beach cottage delimbing a stately birch that was overstepping its boundaries.

And, I thought, this is the way things should be. Trees need to be taught a thing or two, like they can't just grow any which way they want without repercussions.

Not a popular sentiment, by most accounts, especially here in the land of the greens, where dogs and cedars and pop-up protesters trump all when it comes to societal sentiment.

Because, let's face it, who doesn't love a tree? Trees are pretty, and provide nooks for birds' nests and strong ledges for tree forts. Their 50 shades of green are like no other, hues that only nature could create and in whose shadow man must forever feel the lesser artist.

Trees are the lungs of the earth, prevent erosion and inspire us with their majesty, their stoic survival in the face of war and pestilence and logging companies.

Perhaps we so revere our trees, chaining ourselves to them and defending their honour, hollow and otherwise, because they remind us of life, their roots planted deep in history, their branches reaching out to the world.

Perhaps it is why we preserve sainthood for all that is bark and branch, leaf and needle, whether it's a thousand-year-old primordial cedar lording over a foggy Vancouver Island cove or a garden-centre sapling planted in an urban backyard and coddled into bearing fruit.

Trees. We stand in awe of their beauty and utility, their utter magnificence.

But trees aren't the boss of us. Sometimes, we need to fell them, for firewood or to build a house or because we're in the resource business, or because they're dangerous or diseased or just plain ugly. Sometimes, they stand in the way of progress.

Sometimes, people, we forget that trees are just trees. They grow, they fall down, get chopped up or die of old age, millions of them all around us, and have for thousands of years, a cycle that begins anew with each seed floating on the wind.

Investigators work to determine cause of 5-alarm Berkeley fire

    - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- The search is on for the cause of a dramatic East Bay fire that heavily damaged four businesses in a Berkeley warehouse.

It happened Saturday night near Hearst and Second streets. Smoke and flames could be seen for miles. The flames tore into power lines, knocking out service to several local businesses. Nearly 24 hours later on Sunday evening, the fire was still smoldering.

"Boy, I can't believe what I see," warehouse owner Bill DeCarion said. "I can't believe it."

"There's no evidence of the glass anywhere," he said. "I mean, it must have melted."

The five-alarm fire Saturday was incredible, lighting up the night sky. It took 70 firefighters several hours to contain it.

During the firefight, live power lines actually fell onto firefighters.

"It dropped across the battalion chief's vehicle," said Chief Gil Dong. "And actually one of the power lines did touch one of our firefighters but they did not get shocked."

Fire investigators are yellow tagging parts of the building too dangerous to enter. They're also busy combing through the rubble, looking for clues about how the fire started.

"We look at everything around the building, behind the building, inside the building," Chief Dong said.

"It had completely spread down here, despite the wind blowing this way," said Import Tile Company co-owner Evelyn Larson.

Investigators say Sevierville cabin did not have sprinkler system

    - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Stephanie Beecken

    6 News Reporter

SEVIERVILLE (WATE) - 6 News asked officials if thecabin fire in Seviervillecould have been prevented and if the cabin was up to code.

Breenen said "this particular cabin no did not have a sprinkler system."

According to Breeden, when asking the renters, who were staying in the cabin, if the fire alarm was working some said yes others said no.

The cabin was built in 2004 and at that time, according to Sevier County Planning Director Jeff Ownby, there were only state building codes the cabin owner had to follow.

"There were requirements for smoke detectors. The fire department has been great in working with cabin owners and rental companies to make sure their cabins are equipped with working smoke detectors," said Ownby.

Five years after the cabin was build, in 2009, the county adopted building codes. But cabins built before 2009 do not have to comply with the newer regulations.

"There are thousands of rental cabins in this county, as you all know so very well, so it would be virtually impossible to go back and require them to meet current code so that's not a provision of the law," said Ownby.

Ownby says codes require cabins to now have a sprinkler system and at least one entrance and exit door. This cabin did have two doors to the outside.
