On-demand household services startup Handybook heads to 12 new cities

    - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

On-demand services are all the rage right now, especially in the domestic services industry. It used to be that if you wanted to hire somebody like a maid or a plumber, youd hit up your local yellow pages to locate someone to perform those services, give them a call, and set an appointment. But that was the old model, and today theres a growing number of startups that are hoping to disrupt it by offering fast, same-day household services at the push of a button.

One of the fastest-growing companies in this category is Handybook a NYC-based startup that bills itself as the easiest way to book home services. Using the companys dead simple mobile app or website, users can book a pre-approved professional cleaner or handyman for practically any household task. All you need to do is tell the service what you need to get done, where you live, and what time works best for you. Handybook figures out the rest from there.

The service is already on the ground in 13 different cities across the U.S., including New York, Boston, San Francisco, San Diego, Miami, Chicago, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, Seattle, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles.

With that many major cities in its territory, Handybook already has a slight leg up on competitors like HomeJoy and HouseCall, but its looking to expand even further. Earlier today the company announced that its making services available in a dozen more cities, includingBaltimore, Austin, San Antonio, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Portland, San Jose, Sacramento, Tampa, and Orlando. It also includes Toronto, which will be Handybooks first market outside the U.S.

Altogether, Handybook will now be available in 25 different markets throughout North America which is pretty impressive when you consider it didnt even exist two years ago.

Home's exterior needs a good once-over in spring

    - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Homes don't take care of themselves.

The elements take their toll on the exterior, so to make sure it stays in good repair, regular maintenance is in order.

    Here's ourchecklist for spring:

Gutters and downspouts: Even if you cleaned them in the fall, a "mulch" can collect in the gutters that can hasten rust and deterioration, and make gutters sluggish during spring showers.

Use a garden hose, a gutter scoop and a nylon brush to flush the gutters and downspouts. Use a wire brush to remove rust and peeling paint. Repair leaks and seal joints with a high-quality exterior grade caulk. Prime bare spots and add a fresh coat of paint.

Siding: No matter the type of siding, it needs periodic cleaning. One of the best means of brightening dingy siding is with a thorough pressure-washing with water. Check for cracks, peeling paint, missing or damaged mortar and caulking, and make the needed repairs.

Roof leaks: Inspect the roof for loose or missing shingles. Binoculars work well for making an on-the-ground inspection. Look in the attic for water stains on the underside of the roof sheathing and on the rafters. They are telltale signs of a roof leak that might yet produce enough water to make its way to your ceiling.

Unless the roof needs replacement, damaged shingle replacement, flashing repair and roofing cement or caulking usually will do the trick.

Caulking: Spring is a good time to caulk around window trim and door frames, especially if you missed doing it in the fall. Do this after you have washed the exterior siding. Caulk tends to crack in concrete, foundations and basement walls.

Window and door screens: If you have trouble getting a good view of your spring flowers through your freshly washed windows, it might mean your window screens need cleaning or replacement. Remove window and door screens and give them a cleaning with a solution of powdered laundry detergent and hot water. Brush the screens with a nylon brush and give the screens and frames a rinsing with a garden hose.

Cyclone Ita clean-up: Trio charged with looting in Ingham

Three boys have been charged with looting after they allegedly burgled a flood-affected business in Ingham.

Police said the boys had smashed through the window of the Herbert Street business and stole property, including cash and stationery, sometime between midnight Sunday and 7am on Monday.

The business was closed due to flooding associated with ex-tropical cyclone Ita.

The boys, two 16-year-olds from Ingham and a 13-year-old from Forrest Beach, were charged with looting offences.

The state disaster coordinator, deputy police commissioner Steve Gollschewski, said the Queensland Police Service had zero tolerance to looting in a disaster zone.

It is very disappointing that in times of disaster some people attempt to take advantage of another persons misfortune, he said.

The QPS will not tolerate looters and are constantly vigilant in order to prevent and, where necessary, capture these opportunists.

Long winter means tough yard work ahead

    - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

This section displays the last 50 news articles that were published.

STATEWIDE -- This year's winter brought a lot of snow. During a typical winter that snow would periodically melt, and give the grass a chance to air out. However, that didn't happen this year. Now, experts predict many lawns could suffer due to a disease called snow mold.

"The grass gets matted down and no air gets to it so it starts to rot, and when it starts to rot this mold develops, and it can spread through the yard and it's tough to get rid of," said Chuck Hafner, owner of Chuck Hafner's Farmers Market and Garden Center.

If you're a homeowner itching to dive back into yard work, the first thing you should do this year is rake your grass to air it out. If you notice any dead spots, experts suggest starting the seeding process as soon as possible.

"For grass seed to germinate there are some certain conditions, it has to be in contact with the soil, which you just make sure you rake the area up, you have to keep it moist, and it likes cooler weather, which usually around that 60 degrees to germinate," said Hafner.

If you reseed now, you'll be more successful than trying to do it in the summer when you'll need a sprinkler constantly running to keep the grass alive. This is also a good time to lay down crabgrass control, fertilizer, or mulch.

"It keeps the weeds down, if you go two to three inches it suffocates the weeds, won't allow the weeds to grow, it retains the moisture in the soil so if you have a dry summer then your shrubs will have more moisture and as it decomposes it releases nitrogen back into the ground, it's a good organic additive to the ground," said Hafner.

However, you'll want to avoid planting most kinds of flowers until at least the second week of May when any frosts should be over.

Eagle County aviators honor Allan Nottingham

    - April 15, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

EAGLE Allan Nottingham has been part of Eagle County aviation almost since, well ... before the beginning.

The Eagle County Aviation Association honored Nottingham for his time, his service and the laughs.

Allan has been buying fuel for getting annuals for ... I dont know how many years, Paul Gordon with the Vail Valley Jet Center.

Heres what we know about dates. In 1964, Nottingham bought a 1954 Cessna 180 and flew it all over our spiral arm of the universe. He owned it for 50 years. That plane taught four of his five children to fly.

The airport was built during World War II as a refueling station for cross country military flights. Nottingham remembers, as a kid, standing in the middle of the grass airstrip as planes landed. A B-24 might have crashed back then. Or not. It might have just landed, refueled and taken off again. Or it might still be a military secret. Allan just smiles.

Not long ago, he sold his hangar and plane. He watched that plane taxi onto the runway and fly away with its new owner, and legend has it that a tear might have come to his eye. Not true that was just excess awesomeness leaking out.

    Flying tall tales

All kinds of stories fly around at an event like this, mostly about hilarious near-death experiences. But lets be clear: You dont get to live as long as Allan has if you fly reckless; hes a skilled and careful pilot. But once in a while, stuff just happens.

Steve Jones flew with him often. Its a matter of friendly contention whether Jones likes flying so much that he bought his own plane, or whether he was so scared he bought his own plane. Nottingham and Jones just smile when you ask them.

There was the time in the early 1960s when Allan had some 80 sheep stranded on Red and White Mountain after a series December snowstorms dumped about four feet of snow. Nottingham and Fred Collett were flying some hay to them two bales because thats all Nottinghams plane would hold. Collett sat in the back and kicking hay out to the sheep. Did we mention that to get the hay in and out, Allan had to take the door off the plane? That would explain why, when his foot slipped, Collett almost fell out.

SOUTH FREETOWN Scales Pond is all set for its grand reintroduction to Islanders later this spring or early summer.

A small, but dedicated group of volunteers has spent all winter working on various aspects of the community parks restoration and have finally declared mission accomplished.

Everyone involved in the project is very proud of what theyve accomplished, said George Webster, a member of the restoration committee.

The project turned out fantastic, said Webster. There was a tremendous amount of volunteers put hours and hours and hours into many pieces of the project.

    People like John Phillips.

Phillips, project manager for the restoration, has been involved in the restoration efforts since it started, and hes excited to show off the accomplishment.

Oh jeez, it feels wonderful, he said. At this time last year we still had about $115,000 left to raise I didnt think wed ever raise it. But . . . all you have to do is tell people were going ahead, and thats it (theyre on board), he said.

Phillips said the restoration committee is aiming to have a grand reopening sometime in June, though no official date has been set yet. He said the Scales Pond restoration project has been a huge success story for a small community and its an accomplishment that deserves to be celebrated.
