Strathcona County RCMP is reminding residents to remain vigilant for fraudulent attempts when opening the front door and while checking e-mail.
While reported fraud-related complaints in Strathcona County have remained relatively stable during the past several years, phishing attempts targeting the vulnerable are still common, including efforts conducted by a group called the travellers, otherwise known as the Gypsy or Irish Pavers.
This distinct cluster of nomads travel to various communities throughout Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan operating as unlicensed contractors.
These groups often target seniors and employ high-pressure sales tactics, hounding their victims until they have received as much money as the scam artist feels they can get out of the victims, a press release issued by the RCMP states.
Potential victims are informed that the individuals are part of a small company working within the neighbourhood looking to provide reduced rates for paving due to leftover asphalt from previous jobs.
After completing only part of the work, the contractors pressure their victims into paying large portions of the agreed price, informing the victims they will return the next day to complete the substandard work. The fraudsters, however, never return and victims are then forced to pay a considerable amount in order to repair the poorly paved area.
Victims may also be informed of renovation services that include painting, roofing, rain gutter cleaning, chimney repair or any other home renovations.
Recurring complaints to local police throughout the provinces often include the main suspect identified as a male referred to as Pat and suspects speaking with a distinctive Irish accent.
Tax Court of Canada fraud
RCMP are also warning against e-mail phishing attempts informing recipients they have been summonsed to appear at the Tax Court of Canada, threatening that a failure to appear in court will result in an arrest warrant on criminal charges, imposing civil sanctions and a suspension of the intended victims drivers licence.

Finally! The weather is beautiful in the St. Louis area and homeowners can get the gardening gloves on and head outside to tackle the lawn and garden work.
Some property owners dont know that the outside of a home can be greatly impacted by what may be lurking in the front or back yard. Ensuring that yards, gardens, and decks/patios are ready for spring can go a long way in preventing costly pest damage. The friendly professionals at Micks Exterminating can advise homeowners on best practices for springtime St. Louis pest prevention it would be a good idea to schedule a visit! Some of these things are especially important to ensure the health of children and pets this spring and early summer.
While landscaping, homeowners should pay attention to signs of any visible damage to the lawn, landscaping, decks/patios, or outdoor furniture. If a lawn service or landscaper does the yard work, homeowners should ask the professional for any signs of damage. Carpenter bees, which can burrow into dry wood in homes, decks, and fences can be easily mistaken for termites a determination that a Micks Exterminating professional can make. A good practice to create an invisible barrier around the home, meaning shrubs and plants should not be planted any closer than 18 to 24 inches from the homes foundation.
Using pressure treated wood for raised vegetable beds, playscapes and any other outdoor structure can help eliminate the potential of hosting pest infestations. Pressure treated wood is treated to resist rot and decay. While this does not completely eliminate the risk of termites or carpenter bees, it goes a long way in discouraging pest activity. It has been popular among homeowners to use untreated wood chips around the home and in landscaping to minimize risk, consider choosing another type of landscaping accent. If wood chips or mulch is used, do not create a layer that is more than 3 inches thick. River rocks can make an attractive and natural alternative to wood chips. River rock or crushed rock placed close to the home can also help to drain excess water away from the foundation, an important factor during springtime storms. If there is any exposed wood on the property or home, always make sure the wood is in excellent condition with paint, caulk, and the appropriate sealer.
While conducting outdoor spring cleaning, make sure to clear any leaves, pine needles, twigs, and other debris from yards and landscaping. Yard waste can create rotting and water buildup a place that many pests would love to hang out. Dont just put all of that waste in a pile pick up inexpensive yard waste bags at a local home and garden retailer. If there is a dead tree or even just a tree stump within about 50 feet of the home it would be a good idea to hire a tree removal specialist to have it eliminated from the area. Check for any damage to trees such as broken or dying limbs, large holes or damage at the crotches of branches. Dying trees can make a perfect home for ants and termites a home to avoid hosting on the property.
Make sure to clean gutters at least twice a year, according to The National Center for Healthy Housing, in addition to regularly inspecting for built-up debris. This also aids in reducing moisture and debris being held closely against the home a perfect place for some springtime pests to congregate. Having a gutter guard installed can help in avoiding messy and costly blockage in the gutter system. When designing a landscaping concept, always avoid a place for standing water to collect. Standing water can attract mosquitos, water bugs, and flies. If there is a birdbath on the lawn, place it at least 50 feet away from your home and make sure to regularly change out the water. Always keep up with regular trimming of tree branches, vines, and other plants. Ants and other pests can use these as bridges into the home to avoid pest-treated ground outside. If summer screen doors and windows are not installed, it can be a great investment and go a long way in prevention of avoidable pests.

If you want a dog and a lush lawn, you're not out of luck.
Dog urine can damage grass, but highly rated experts in lawn care, landscaping and dog training tell our team that there are several ways your pet and your property can coexist.
Change your habits: The cheapest and easiest way to reduce doggie damage is to hose down and dilute urine right after the dog relieves itself. Then, commit to re-seeding damaged areas of grass as needed.
Change your yard: A top dog trainer says his grass is better able to withstand the effects of multiple dogs when he maintains a 4-inch height and applies organic fertilizer.
Another option, if your dog uses a specific area of the yard, is to cover the grass with pea gravel or artificial turf.
Artificial grass costs about $1.50 to $5 a square foot. Pick a higher density option with a nonporous backing. Choose polypropylene or polyethylene over nylon, because poly products won't absorb moisture and will drain better. Using crushed granite as a base material under the turf will also help with drainage. For infill, use silica sand or another product that won't absorb odor.
Change your dog: Many dogs can be trained to urinate and defecate in a designated spot. It may take four to six weeks of effort. Flag off a sizeable portion of lawn to create a large target zone to start. Leash your pet and take it to that area every time it has to go. Always clean up after the dog. Over time, as the pet responds, gradually shrink the flagged-off area to your preferred size. Eventually, you won't need the flags; the dog will know the boundaries.
Get the scoop before hiring: If solid waste in the yard is your concern, consider outsourcing cleanup duty. Besides garnering positive online recommendations, a reliable "pooper scooper" business should be able to provide you with a cost estimate, often based on the size of your yard, the size of your dog(s) and frequency of service.

Verdict
Day Dream Boy is a little old to be starting a career over fences but arrives in good form having won twice recently over hurdles. Hop In looked certain to win soon after a promising chasing debut at Thurles but never looked happy at Clonmel last month and finished well beaten. Winning point-to-pointer Ring Ben has shown promise over fences and should be ready to strike soon. HIGHBROW BLUE scored between the flags at year ago and has run into some very useful novices over timber. He hasn't been disgraced and should be even better over fences so is given the nod. Killtilane Rose ran well enough in her first two starts over fences to be sent into Grade 2 company but she never showed and has since been well beaten at Gowran.
