Smart Spending: Spring cleaning, homemade style

    - April 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

NEW YORK (AP) With spring emerging from a seemingly never-ending winter, I wanted to clean my New York City apartment. But without cleaning products.

I've been trying to eliminate unfamiliar chemicals and the consumer products stuffed with them from my life when feasible. So I got advice on how to clean without them from Cori Morenberg, the owner of the Ms. Green-Clean cleaning service in New York, and Mary Findley, author of "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Green Cleaning" and a seller of green cleaning products.

They had a few key ingredients for me: White vinegar, baking soda, dish detergent, essential oils, rubbing alcohol and water.

So can I clean without Clorox, Windex and Murphy Oil Soap? (Yes.) Is it harder? (Kind of it's an extra step to mix cleaners together rather than just spraying from a package.) Does it smell better? (Yes.) Is it easier on my skin? (Yes.) Cheaper? (A little.)

    ALL-PURPOSE CLEANER

A one-size-fits-all soapy mixture works for most surfaces, both Morenberg and Findley say.

Morenberg likes warm water, dish soap she likes a brand called Ecover and a few drops of an essential oil in a bucket. Findley pushes warm water, Biokleen dish soap and about a quarter-cup of distilled white vinegar, and she puts the whole mixture in a spray bottle.

Morenberg recommends dipping microfiber and cotton terry cloths, available at grocery stores and hardware stores, in the solution, wringing them out and then attacking floors and other surfaces.

Exceptions: Findley says the vinegar mixture should not be used on stone floors or countertops because the acid in it can dull the surface. So stick to hot water and soap. On wood or laminate floors, avoid soap. Clean those with warm water and vinegar.

I filled a large plastic container halfway with warm water, poured in less than half a cup of white vinegar, added a few drops of some lavender essential oil and a squirt of my dish soap. I tried cleaning my window sills, which got grimy over the winter, with paper towels dipped in this mix. That didn't work so well the windowsills are less dirty, but aren't sparkling, either. Using paper towels with the solution didn't work well for me on really dirty surfaces.

Doug Turner Plumbing Announce New Spring Services in Sugar Land, Texas

    - April 10, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sugar Land, TX (PRWEB) April 09, 2014

For almost 30 years, the Doug Turner Plumbing Company has been providing plumbing services to the Sugar Land and Houston area. Now ready for the coming Spring, this Stafford-based company has expanded its offerings to better serve its clients.

Backflow prevention systems are required for making sure unclean water or wastewater does not flow backward into clean water systems. An example is getting toilet bowl wateror blue water due to a toilet bowl cleanerfrom a faucet. For the sake of family and community health, clean and dirty water must remain separate. Doug Turner Plumbing ensures that the ground water does not back up into the clean water system.

In addition to mixing clean and filthy water, backflow results in clogged drains. Doug Turner's licensed plumbers use conventional methods like augers and snakes to work on the clogs. However, in more extreme situations, the plumbers can use a hydro-jet machine instead. These are very powerful tools that shoot high pressure water and are mainly used in commercial buildings.

For diagnosing plumbing problems, Doug Turner's plumbers rely on the latest technology. That includes video pipeline testing, which consists of a video camera inserted into a faulty pipe for an accurate assessment of the problem. Doug Turner Plumbing can also service and repair faulty water systems. In fact, the company is a factory warranty service provider for Rheem's water heater line. Doug Turner can also install a brand new system if the customer so wishes.

For customers who want to eliminate the need for bottled water in their homes, Doug Turner provides water filtration systems. Water dispensers can be placed in the kitchen, bar sink and even the bathroom. For those longing for a complete overhaul of their plumbing fixtures as part of Spring cleaning, Doug Turner Plumbing is definitely up to the task. The company remodels and replaces plumbing in places like bathrooms, kitchens, pool houses and utility rooms, among others.

    About

Founded in 1987 by the husband-and-wife team of Doug and Nancy Turner, Doug Turner Plumbing has served the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Town metropolitan area for more than 20 years. In addition to plumbing services, the company is certified to install factory-approved water heaters, water piping systems and steel gas piping systems. Doug Turner Plumbing is a member of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and the Houston Area Better Business Bureau. For a service request, Doug Turner Plumbing can be reached by dialing 281-980-9300.

Waterfront building design gets thumbs up

Waterfront building design gets thumbs up

Wellington City Councils Transport and Urban Development Committee this week supported plans for a new building and public space improvements in the north Kumutoto area of Wellingtons waterfront.

The Committee agreed to recommend the full Council approve the preliminary design of the six-storey building proposed to revitalise the area of the waterfront between Waterloo Quay Apartments and the Whitmore Street entrance, which is currently used for motorhome parking.

The Council, which owns the site, will consider the recommendation at its next meeting on 7 May along with the terms of the development agreement and ground lease.

Developer Willis Bond and Co and designer Athfield Architects need these approvals before they can take the next steps in the development process doing further design work and then applying for resource consent.

The proposed building includes A-grade office space, retail and food outlets, a pedestrian link between Waterloo Quay and the harbour, a landscaped outdoor area and covered pedestrian walkways around the building. Wellington Waterfront Ltd plans to complete the remaining public areas in this part of the waterfront at the same time.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says the proposal is a considerable improvement on the previous proposal.

Im keen to ensure as much public access as possible is preserved, and that the visual sightlines to our beautiful harbour are maintained, she says.

Councillor Andy Foster, who chairs the Transport and Urban Development Committee, says the site has had a long and challenging history and he is very pleased the latest plans for a high quality building have reached this point.

The proposal to replace motorhome parking and build on the site is completely in keeping with the Wellington Waterfront Framework, which guides how the waterfront will be developed, he says. Weve been through a very robust process to get to this point and the question of whether the design and scale is appropriate will ultimately be determined through the resource consent process quite possibly by the Environment Court.

Cutting at Westlake Plaza was halted temporarily today, but has since resumed

By Anna Bitong and Kyle Jorrey

The tree cutting at Westlake Plaza ceased this morning while the centers owners and city staff worked out a plan to remove more than 200 trees in phases.

In the process of removing the trees at the popular shopping center at the corner of Westlake Boulevard and Agoura Road, landscaping crews today were given the order to stop working during the discussions. Cutting has since resumed.

Were asking (the owners) to consider a more phased-in approach over time, rather than cutting them all at once, said Thousand Oaks Mayor Pro Tem Al Adam, who toured the site today along with fellow Councilmember Claudia Bill-de la Pea and John Prescott, community development director for the city.

Patrick Conway, vice president and regional officer for plaza owner Regency Centers, said that the city reached out to the company this morning to discuss the new approach.

Were going to mitigate the timing and phasing of the tree removal so that we dont create a stark environment while were getting through the project, Conway said.

As of this morning, roughly 20 to 25 trees had already been removed, including four protected oak trees, according to Adam.

Conway couldnt confirm how many trees have already been cut, as some of the trees were removed last year with a separate permit.

The work is part of a $25-million renovation project that intends to improve the look and appearance of the 40-year-old shopping center; it was approved administratively in October without a public hearing.
