The Pest Control industry has experienced robust growth over the past five years, led by the increasing presence of bed bugs. According to IBISWorld Industry Analyst Stephen Morea, The rising ubiquity of these nighttime critters has fuelled demand for pest extermination professionals, underpinning robust revenue growth. From 2009 through 2014, revenue for the Pest Control industry is expected to increase at an average annual rate of 4.1% to reach $393.1 million. In the years since the recession, increased housing demand has led to revenue growth for residential pest control services. Moreover, the rapid proliferation of bed bugs helped yield strong pest control demand, particularly from hotels and residential clients. A continuation of these factors is expected to result in a 4.0% increase in industry revenue in 2014.
Pest control services in Canada are traditionally geared toward the commercial market, which accounts for an estimated 80.0% of industry revenue, according to information from Pest Control Technology. Tepid growth in Canadian per capita disposable income has led to increased consumer spending and sales for restaurants, food and drinking establishments, says Morea. As these key downstream markets continued to expand, demand for pest control services in Canada rise accordingly. In addition, federal and provincial regulations for food service establishments provide a steady stream of demand for pest extermination services. During the past five years, pest control operators are increasingly targeting residential customers and diversifying their service lines to take advantage of untapped markets. This trend is expected to accelerate over the next five years, partly because greater regulations aimed at some over-the-counter pesticide products are expected to take effect, limiting competition from substitute products.
Over the five years to 2019, the Pest Control industry is expected to continue its upward trajectory. In the five years to 2019, industry revenue is forecast to rise. Bed bugs are expected to become increasingly prevalent in both homes and commercial establishments, resulting in strong demand for pest extermination professionals, particularly in urban areas. This will foster strong product development over the next five years, particularly in the areas of heat-based solutions, given their increasing insecticide resistance.

RENO, NV - The owners of a Spanish Springs home had every reason to believe their dogs were safe and secure when they left them Saturday morning.
But they returned to a horrible sight; their Shih Tzu lay dead on their living room floor, their Pekingese just inside the home and their black lab in a bathroom, the pit bulls standing over her.
After tearing through three fences, the pit bulls had entered the home through the dog door.
Experts at Washoe Animal Services say that detail is unusual, but they have seen it before.
"Last year we had some incidents out in the Spanish Springs area where coyotes were jumping fences and in a couple of instances went through a dog door and killed pets inside," says Animal Services Field Supervisor Bobby Smith.
Smith says it's more common to see skunks and raccoons use a dog door to enter a home.
They can offer human intruders access as well.
"It's fairly common, yes," says Reno Police Officer Tim Broadway. "I would say two or three times a month we get reports that a home has been burglarized through a dog door."
Neither man, however, would tell you not to install one of these doors. They say you should do your homework and use the locking security doors when needed.
"Look at the customer reviews for strength," says Broadway. "Look at the available products, the metal doors to cover them up to keep anybody from making entry."

A police spokesman said Poly Auction requested them to "withdraw the case and that they do not need police assistance."
Police are treating the case as lost property and will not follow up on it unless a new lead emerges.
Poly said it will launch an investigation and assured that all auctioned items were insured and would be compensated according to Hong Kong's insurance laws.
"Snowy Mountain," by renowned Chinese artist Cui Ruzhuo, was bought at a sale by Poly, the world's third-largest auctioneer, at the Grand Hyatt Hotel on Monday.
CCTV footage showed a security guard appearing to accidentally kick a tube, believed to have contained the painting, into a stack of rubbish, which was then shipped to a landfill.
The incident raised concern over whether Poly had been acting professionally in handling artworks.
After being sold, the painting was placed with other sold items in a corner of the hall that night.
The person in charge, returning the next morning to pick up the valuables, then discovered it was lost and reported it to police.

HK police search landfill for US$3.7 mil. Painting
Hong Kong police on Wednesday searched for a valuable painting mistakenly dumped in a landfill after it sold for US$3.7 million at auction, reports said.
"Snowy Mountain" by the Chinese artist Cui Ruzhuo, which was a main feature of the spring auction by Beijing-based Poly Culture this week, was dumped by cleaners at the luxury hotel hosting the sale, the South China Morning Post said.
Grand Hyatt hotel cleaners were suspected of dumping the painting, which sold on Monday for more than HK$28.75 million (US$3.71 million), along with rubbish that was taken to a landfill, the paper said, citing an unnamed police source.
Police suspected the painting was thrown out by cleaners after viewing security camera images but would not rule out the possibility of it having been stolen, media reported.
Police said a theft case was reported on Tuesday by an auction house staff member regarding a painting, without further details.
A Grant Hyatt spokeswoman would not confirm if the painting had been dumped as trash but said hotel staff did not handle items sold at the auction because they were too expensive.
She said that organizers would hire their own security and contractors for such events involving "high-value" items.

Dont look now, American Canyon homeowner, but your lawn is out to get you. In fact, both lawns, front and back, are conspiring to do you in even as you read this. Your plots are plotting.
Right now those innocent looking green expanses are arguing over the method of homicide and which of them gets to bury the body.
Currently, the consensus is for stabbing: After all, lawns have plenty of blades. But poisoning is also an option. Over the years, your lawn has collected lethal quantities of pesticides and weed-killer.
But, you protest, what have I ever done to my lawn to deserve such malevolence? I love my lawn. Dont I feed it, water it, trim it, and remove unsightly weeds?
Its not what youve done, grasshopper, its what youre going to do.
The lawns motivation for this murderous plan is the same as that of megalomaniacal supercomputer Hal 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey: self-preservation.
Grass isnt as green as it looks. The old sod knows about your plan to let it die of thirst this summer. The lawn is planning to strike first, before it gets too withered.
Dont deny it, you know its true. The drought is going to force you to choose between you taking a shower or letting your lawn have it. I dont know about you, but I view a shower as a daily necessity, especially in warm weather. And while its a matter of comfort for you (and those around you), to the lawn its a case of survival.
And as much as you might try to share a cup for you, a thimbleful for the lawn at some point you will realize you are only prolonging the agony. You know how it is with grass: Give it an inch, it takes a yard.
And as the summer wears on, the choices are likely to get even more difficult.

Philadelphia, PA (PRWEB) April 10, 2014
It's spring lawn care time and many Philadelphia homeowners are itching to see lawns come alive. Unfortunately many lawns will need significant help to be green and healthy after the brutal winter. Giroud Tree and Lawn provides the steps homeowners need to take in its new Spring Lawn Care Checklist and lawn treatment program comparison video.
The key to a healthy lawn lies in simple actions that include professional evaluation, custom lawn treatments and lawn repair.
No two lawns are alike, explains Mike Taraborrelli, Lawn Care Manager at Giroud Tree and Lawn. The soil and other growing conditions can be radically different from one neighbor to another and even between different areas of the same lawn. The best starting point is a professional evaluation to determine the reasons for poor lawn health and appearance.
A professional lawn evaluation by a PA Certified Lawn Specialist will target the main factors that can damage lawn health including: 1. Poor soil: Improperly balanced soil pH, low organic matter levels, compaction and drainage can adversely affect even the most well cared for lawn. 2. Insects and disease: Non-beneficial fungi and insects are always present but not necessarily in sufficient numbers to cause damage. Properly timed controls when needed, resistant grass varieties, and healthy turf and soil are the best defense against these pests. 3. Nutrient deficiencies: lawns requires regular fertilizer treatments to replace nutrients utilized by the plant or not readily available from the soil. Get a lab test of the soil for a comprehensive analysis of soil health and nutrient content. 4. Improper mowing and watering: Lawns mowed too short can lead to scorching and lawn thinning, inviting weed and crabgrass infestations. Too much or too little watering impacts both plant and soil health.
Once the reasons for poor lawn health are determined, homeowners or the professional lawn treatment service should take the following actions. 1. Lawn Treatment Programs: The best lawn treatments are customized to fit the exact needs of each specific lawn. Additionally, the program needs to be aligned with a homeowners preference for traditional versus 100% Organic Lawn Treatments. For Spring, apply a lawn fertilizer treatment containing both quick and slow release nitrogen. Use a starter fertilizer formula if the lawn has been seeded. 2. Lawn Repair: Core aeration followed by organic compost topdressing will improve soil drainage, structure, nutrient availability, and reduce thatch levels. For many lawns, a lime application is required to get the pH in balance. 3. Tree Pruning: Thin and raise tree canopies to allow more light on lawn areas affected by excessive shade. 4. Weed and Crabgrass Controls: Catch crabgrass early by applying a preemergent crabgrass control to inhibit weedy grass germination. For weed controls, liquid products will provide better coverage to small weeds than granular materials. Apply while weather is cool and wind is still. Do not use non-selective weed controls such as Roundup in lawn areas. Always follow label directions when using lawn products. 5. Monitoring: Lawn care is never a one and done. The lawn treatment service company should offer regular service calls to stay on top of changes in the lawn throughout the growing season. This approach ensures the lawn gets the right treatments or service at the right time to achieve optimum health.
Professional lawn evaluation, custom tailored lawn treatment and repair services and careful monitoring are the essential actions homeowners can take now to build and maintain a healthy, thick, green lawn.
