Kilsheimer defeats Land in Apopka mayoral race; Lynum, Hill in runoff

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

APOPKA, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

Voters in Apopka have elected a new mayor.

Joe Kilsheimer, 56, has defeated 93-year-old incumbent John Land. Kilsheimer captured 54 percent of the vote to Land's 46 percent.

Tuesday's runoff election was called since neither Land nor Kilsheimer got a majority of the nearly 5,000 votes cast during last March's mayoral election in what was a four-candidate race. Kilsheimer and Land were the two top vote-getters.

Land had run unopposed in the last dozen years.

Also in Apopka, Sam Ruth has defeated Linda Ann Laurendeau, 51 percent to 49 percent in the race for Apopka City Council.

Apopka has a population of 44,000 residents.

Lynum, Hill will face each other in runoff for Orlando Council seat

In the city of Orlando, there was no clear winner in the race for the District 5 City Council seat. Juan Lynum was widely considered the favorite, but he will have to go to a runoff election after not getting more than 50 percent of the vote.

The race has been closely watched, because Juan Lynum is the son of longtime City Commissioner Daisy Lynum. She qualified to run for reelection early and it discouraged many challengers. In the last hour of the last day of qualifying, Juan Lynum entered the race. The following Monday, Daisy Lynum withdrew from the race, seemingly clearing the path for her son. Juan Lynum says he never just assumed he would win.

    Cashew plantations destroyed

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Representatives of 50 families in Ratanakkiris Andong Meas district filed a complaint with rights group Adhoc yesterday alleging that a Vietnamese concessionaire is responsible for destroying about 50 hectares of cashew plantations.

Sorl Penh, 58, a representative for the villagers from Nhang commune, said yesterday that locals had been relying on the land for nearly 20 years but had been unable to stop Company 72 from clearing community land since March 14.

About 20 to 30 of us tried to stop their vehicles. They stopped while we were there, and they continued clearing when we left. We do not know what to do since the authorities also could not find a solution for this [dispute], he said.

Andong Meas district governor Norng Darith said district authorities had attempted to solve the issue three times already but had failed.

Some villagers stopped using the land eight or 10 years ago, but when the company tried to clear it, they stopped the company and said it was their own, Darith said.

Company 72 has already been implicated in a land dispute involving the clearing of some 10 per cent of a 1,000-hectare forest in neighbouring OYadav district, said Chhay Thy, provincial coordinator for rights group Adhoc.

This company did not obey the policy of economic land concessions, because it has cleared community forest and farmlands. But still there has been no legal measure set to punish them, Thy said, adding that the firm was overstepping its 6,000-hectare concession in OYadav.

Contact information for Company 72 is not publicly available, but OYadav district governor Dak Sar confirmed with the Post in late March that the companys concession partly overlapped with the villagers forest.

    Space is her canvas

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Smitha Zachariah loves to play with textures, colours and light. Space for her is like a canvas. You guessed right Smitha is an interior designer.

After a course at Shristi School of Design and a Masters in Textiles from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology Smitha started SZ Design. However, it wasnt designing clothes but interior designing that captured her heart.

A lot of textile and colours do come into my designs, says Smitha. In fact, most of my work is textile oriented.

It has been three years since I got into interior designing, a decision made out of sheer passion. But, today, I look back and see that I have learnt a lot on the job. All I need is an empty space and my brain starts working. First its the natural light that I want to play with.

Smitha elaborates about how she adapts her designs according to the spaces she works with. If I am working on an old building then I try to bring in a modern twist to it by using bright colours. I like to experiment with straight lines too; the colours I choose are dependent on space. I choose earthy tones for heritage properties. When it comes to modern properties, I try to create designs with vivacious colours such as hot pink, green or blue.

About her work in the city Smitha says that the most challenging space for her design was the Bombay Attic, a lifestyle store. It offered a small space. My challenge was to bring in the wow factor, for which I again brought it colours and textiles. I am also fascinated with prints on textiles. The mens lifestyle store pudulifestyle is the other project she worked on where she used large black and white pictures against pale walls. Besides this she has also designed residences and corporate offices.

The reason, Smitha says, she is fascinated with design is because for me it is all about lifestyle. For me style is all about colour. The core point is that I enjoy what I do. Ten years down the line I see the same fire in me for design.

The Printed Page: Tour Interior Designer Sara Story's Enticing Texas Retreat

Calling interior designer Sara Story's family home in Texas Hill Country eclectically inspired might be a bit of an understatement. Though San Antonio's Lake|Flato Architects, who also built a home for Story's father two decades ago, made basing decisions on the site a primary concern, Story worked with them on the project, drawing the heavy limestone aspect of the sprawling compound from the renovated farmhouses of Provence, France, where her family often summers. The living room (above, left) is anchored by a steel fireplace surrounded with panels of eggshell veneer by Chapeau Design, while the master bedroom features a Marc Phillips rug, a vintage Pace Collection bench from Lobel Modern, and custom nightstands, also by Chapeau. Architectural Digest recently toured chez Story, which has singular architecture and savvy decoration on display in equal measure.

Photo by Pieter Estersohn/Architectural Digest The kitchen is stocked with custom-made Wyeth counter stools, a Gaggneau fridge, Dornbracht sink fittings, and a range by Lacanche.

Photo by Pieter Estersohn/Architectural Digest The children's bedroom is decked out with a chartreuse curtain of Toile de Tours cotton-viscose by Georges Le Manach, the Chow Chow rug by Marc Phillips Decorative Rugs, and the 'About A Chair' chair by Hay from Karkula.

Photo by Pieter Estersohn/Architectural Digest A sandblasted concrete-paved loggia connects the children's wing to the main house. Story designed the sofas and lounge chairs herself, and brought in Mood armchairs by Bivaq from Karkula, a Gloster Bloc sectional sofa, and Boffi's Air ST ceiling fan. Angies List: Necessary Home Improvements

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    By Jim Donovan

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) Many of us dream of adding a bathroom fit for a luxury hotel, or creating a backyard that looks more like a resort. But chances are you may have to spend your money on upgrades that arent nearly as glamorous.

In this weeks Angies list report, Jim Donovan looks at several home improvement projects you cant ignore.

Robyn Meslin was not happy when she learned she needed to repair the wiring in her new home.

The basement was pretty much a nightmare. So there were open electrical boxes down there, switches that didnt turn on and off, anything that we could figure out, explained Meslin.

Unfortunately, there are projects that have to be done around your house that you are never going to talk to other people about updating wiring, replacing your roof these are the kind of things that are required to keep your house in good condition, but they are not fun and exciting, but if you dont do these things its really going to hinder the value of your home and its resale value, said Angies List founder, Angie Hicks.

They may not be exciting, but here are few projects you should never avoid, like repairing your foundation. You may not be eager to repair that slow-growing crack up the wall, but foundation issues cant be ignored. Have it checked out before its too late.

Another important project is removing mold failure to get rid of it can cause health problems. Make sure to hire a remediation company that pinpoints the source of the mold.

And of course, dont forget your electrical wiring. Rewiring a home or modernizing an aging electrical system is not cheap, but it is much safer.

You cant brag out it. Hey, I got a new electrical panel! Ooh! Its more fun to pick out drapes or decide on colors or say, Lets put hardwood floors throughout the house, but really if it all burns down whats the point? said Meslin.

Business models that make the Internet of Things feasible

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

For some people, its too early to plan mass consumerization of the Internet of Things. Developers are contentedly tinkering with Arduinos and clip cables, demonstrating cool one-off applications. We know that home automation can save energy, keep the elderly and disabled independent, and make life better for a lot of people. But no one seems sure how to realize this goal, outside of security systems and a few high-end items for luxury markets (like the Nest devices, now being integrated into Googles grand plan).

But what if the willful creation of a mass consumer market could make the technology even better? Perhaps the Internet of Things needs a consumer focus to achieve its potential. This view was illuminated for me through a couple recent talks with Mike Harris, CEO of the home automation software platform Zonoff.

Harris doubts that individual device manufacturers can crack the home market. First of all, they have trouble reaching their potential customers and establishing trust. Second, they arent attuned enough to customer needs, which include devices you can drop on a stone floor without breaking and services you can bring up by pressing a single button.

Most importantly, they are not manufacturing devices that play well together but the whole premise of smart homes is that the lights, thermostats, phones, TVs, etc., easily interoperate. Furthermore, the Internet of Things is really a cloud service; few applications can get much done just using the devices themselves and no single manufacturer can provide a comprehensive solution that all devices will talk to.

So, Harris sees three major types of companies driving the Internet of Things in the home:

Harris thinks the laurels will go to large, well-established companies that take the time to choose high-quality devices, educate consumers, and enforce interoperability. This may be less fun than wiring up your bicycle to glow in the dark, but it can ultimately bring many benefits.
