City Diary: Mutiny on the top decks of Centrica over bonus-gate

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

After impeccable" sources told these pages that the energy chief will exit Centrica by the end of the year, he updated with a broad smile: Chief executives can stay too long in their jobs.

    ----------------------------------------------------

Nick Candy, one half of the uber-prime Candy & Candy property fraternity, may have announced a return to profit at his interior design business this week.

But a source tells Diary that the Candy brothers have a challenge on their hands in the 10m-plus market.

Another set of brothers, Christian and Alex Stocker, are building up their Sons & Co property developer thanks to 200m backing from HBRE, the real estate company run by entrepreneur James Caan, and his partners in the Gulf.

If Sons & Co does succeed in stealing oligarch market share from the Candys in Mayfair and surrounding postcodes, the success will be particularly sweet.

The Sons & Co branding was devised by one Alex de Blonay, who previously lent her branding skills to Candy & Candy.

Looming new sewage regulations can improve public health

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

One of the many tasks of public health is to protect drinking water as safe water is vital not only to health but also to economic development.

The ancient Romans developed a series of aqueducts and public latrines with the intention of making sewage go away. Their technology was innovative, but not very effective. Disease from contaminated water continued to spread widely.

This idea of simply making sewage go away prevailed until the very end of the 20th century.

In the 1950s and 60s, we experienced rapid economic growth and people by the thousands wanted to move out of the city to areas where there was no public sewer system. To accommodate this urban sprawl, we installed on-site sewage disposal systems that utilized leaching trenches and dry wells that were often deep enough to contaminate the aquifer. If waste water drained away quickly, that was considered good and we had little regard for where the sewage went.

Today, we realize that we need to do what is necessary to make sewage safe before it goes away. In Ohio, statewide rules are being developed for home sewage systems. No longer will we install sewage disposal systems. The plan is to install sewage treatment systems.

The new rules are still being finalized through a collaborative effort of private industry and government, and they are expected to be finalized for 2015. Their task is to protect the water supply through use of modern technology and better-trained contractors while providing more options for the homeowner or those who wish to build new homes.

The rules will require better use of the soil above bedrock as it contains micro-organisms that digest harmful bacteria and viruses contained in raw sewage. In order to determine what technology will be installed, we expect that all new and replacement septic systems, including those with expired approvals, will require a soil evaluation by the health department or a soil scientist.

At the same time, we expect a decrease of the required depth of soil which will allow us to install mostly modern leaching trenches instead of above-ground systems called mounds. Modern leaching trenches are not as deep and will have minimum length requirements along land contours which will make it more challenging to install a replacement system. A detailed plot plan will also be required for all new and replacement systems.

We expect the encouragement of the use of green technology. Water from bathing, showering and washing clothes will be allowed to be recycled through irrigation systems. Incinerating and composting toilets may also be installed in order to reduce the volume of waste discharged into the environment.

Installers, services providers and pumpers will have to show that they are trained to work with modern technology by passing a statewide test, having certificates of training for specific systems and completing continuing education courses. They will also be more accountable by having proof of general liability insurance and a surety bond.

Mother returns to St. Louis to hold vigil where her son was fatally shot in 2012

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the end, St. Louis just represented too much heartbreak to Carman Weber.

Her mother was murdered here in 1986, when Weber was a teen. Then, two years ago, her son was gunned down.

Weber worked as a Metro bus driver at the time, and her route took her by the murder scene. Finally she decided to move.

St. Louis has too many painful memories for me, said Weber, who now lives in Austin, Texas.

But she returned on Tuesday with a small amount of hope, that a candlelight vigil tonight, on the second anniversary of her sons death, might somehow elicit a tip in the case.

Antonio D. Duff, 24, was shot 12 times as he sat in his vehicle in the 4900 block of Warwick Avenue on April 9, 2012. It was 1:30 p.m., not the middle of the night. People were sitting on their porches.

Crime scene investigators collected more than 20 shell casings from the scene. Residents told police Duff was seen talking with his killer before the man fired numerous shots into Duffs Lincoln. He sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head and body.

But police got nowhere with gathering more information on the case. Weber hopes a candlelight vigil at the murder scene at 6 p.m. today can change that.

I pray to God that he puts it on someones conscience to tell somebody what happened, she said. I pray this prayer every day. For someone to get killed in broad daylight and no one says anything is wrong. I cant believe that all of those people sitting on their front porches said they didnt see anything.

Nona Porch recalled as great lady, leader

By CHARLES WHISENANT Wednesday, April 9, 2014 8:11 AM CDT

    The Arab Tribune

Wynona Parker Nona Porch was remembered this week as a civic leader in Arab for many years. Porch, 92, died Sunday at her residence in Cherokee Ridge.

She was married for 61 years to Dr. Ellis F. Porch Sr., who died several years ago.

The Porches moved to Arab in 1954 to open his medical practice. They both immediately jumped into serving their new community.

Nona was one of eight children, raised in Marengo County. Her father was a rural route mail carrier who delivered the mail by horseback.

She used to tell us that he would come home frozen to his saddle when it would get really cold in the winter, said Jackie NeSmith, one of the Porches daughters. They would have to help him get off the horse and get him thawed. I always thought that was so interesting.

A Tomahawk guide to preparing for spring

A Tomahawk guide to preparing for spring

While easy is a relative term, there are ways homeowners willing to make certain concessions can keep the work and cost of a bathroom renovation to a minimum.

    Resurface

When possible, covering up what you have in the bathroom is much less expensive and less labor-intensive than tearing out existing fixtures and floors and replacing them anew. Resurfacing can extend to refinishing bathtubs to installing shower liners. Those who have unsightly walls or wallpaper that theyre just not ready to remove may consider using wainscotting to cover a portion of the room or even tiling entire walls.

It is important to note that resurfacing and covering up items in the bathroom should only be reserved for cosmetic fixes. If something needs to be replaced because it is damaged or mildew-covered, then covering it up is only hiding the problem and asking for more work in the long run.

    Scale back on materials

One way to save money on a bathroom renovation project is to choose less expensive materials. For example, you may not need to install travertine or marble flooring in a space where less expensive flooring like vinyl is adequate. Advancements in vinyl flooring have enabled this affordable material to mimic the look of more expensive materials at a fraction of the cost.

When redoing tile on walls and shower enclosures, many domestically-produced tiles rival the looks of more expensive imported alternatives. You may be able to save more by buying tile in bulk and using the remainder in other applications around the house.

Based on the 2014 Cost vs. Value Report, Homeowners are Saving Money with Bathroom Tile Refinishing According to NAPCO

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Skokie, IL (PRWEB) April 09, 2014

During the past 6 years many homeowners have chosen to remodel instead of move. Bathrooms are a frequent place they start. In many cases, the tile work is in good shape, but possibly a dated color. Instead of removing and replacing tile, more and more people are turning to tile refinishing. They get a bathroom with a completely new look at a fraction of the cost and no headaches.

According to the 2014 Cost vs. Value report by the website remodeling.hw.net, bathroom remodels return 72.5% when a home is sold. Thats enough of an incentive for many homeowners. If they have tile that is in good shape, but looks like it is left over from the disco era, they have only two choices. The first is to tear out the tile and put in new. The other is to refinish.

Replacing tile gives a completely new look but at considerable expense. Not only is the tile itself expensive, but the labor required to remove the old and put in the new can be considerable. Costs can easily run into the thousands and the entire job can take up to a week.

Tile refinishing gives old tile a completely new look but it in most cases it only takes an afternoon. According to Mike Ripp, refinishing trainer and director of technical support for NAPCO, A trained technician can prep and refinish the tile in most bathrooms in 4 6 hours. Mike goes on, In the end, the tile will look as good as new with a fresh new color. Homeowners really like that there is no demolition of the old tile involved. The cost is a small fraction of cost of replacement.

    Catholic Church Dedicated Friday

    - April 9, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Parish members of Our Lady of the Assumption Church built a new sanctuary to accommodate overcrowding. Friday nights dedication service for the new building was more of the same.

But, it isnt anticipated the church will see the 317 who attended but officials do pledge to have room for those who want to come home to the Catholic church.

The new church, for which the architectural plans and the key to was presented to Bishop Anthony B. Taylor, who also cut the ribbon to allow the throng of parishoners and visitors into the building Friday, will seat 175 to 200.

Thats more than double what the previous sanctuary seated, although the church was drawing about 120 for mass when construction began on the new building in August.

The original church had been dedicated on July 25, 1956 which was about three years following masses beginning in the city, according to church history. Initially, mass was held in a National Guard Armory, and later in a courtroom in the courthouse.

Fridays dedication was the culmination of a project that actually began as a fundraising project in 2008 while Father Don Tranel led the church. Tranel was in town for the dedication Friday and carried a Relic stone that was placed in the new alter in the church.

Tranel came to the church in 2006 from the Glenmary Home Missioners and in 2012 the church transitioned from a mission church to a Diocesan Parish, church history states.

In addition to the new church, the sign in front of Oak Hill Cemetery on Highway 10 providing direction to the church was also replaced with a new one on Friday.
