To support the efforts of National Window Safety Week, sponsored by the National Safety Counci l on April 6-12, 2014, Simonton Windows reminds parents to be extremely cautious with open windows in the home.
"Adults can never be too vigilant when it comes to making sure that children understand the importance of safety around windows," says Matthew Minerd, director of marketing for Simonton Windows. "It only takes a few seconds for a child to push too hard against a screen in an open window for an accident or fall to occur.
"Parents can help safeguard children in the home by keeping furniture (including cribs) and anything else a child can climb on, away from windows. And, if your home or apartment has Double Hung windows, open only the top part of the window that children cannot reach, to allow for ventilation.
The organization Safe Kids Worldwide TM reports that unintentional falls are the number one cause of non-fatal injury for children, and 43 percent of fall-related injuries are among children ages four and under. Plus, children are twice as likely to be injured in a fall-related injury at home than at a childcare facility. The organization reports that children fall out of windows more frequently in large urban areas and low-income neighborhoods.
Simonton Windows offers these safety tips for windows in the home:
Tip #1 - Remember the primary purpose of a window screen is to keep insects outside. Never push on screens, as they will not support the weight of a child or family pet.
Tip #2 - Lock windows when not in use to protect against intruders and make it more difficult for curious young children to open windows.
Tip #3 - Do not paint or nail windows shut. Every window in the home that is designed to be opened should be operational in case of an emergency.
Tip #4 - Refrain from nailing or attaching decorative lights to the interior or exterior of window frames.

SACRAMENTO The most shameful habit of California legislators arguably is their annual summer shakedown of lobbyists. But it finally may be ending, at least in the Senate.
Senate leaders rocked by the corruption scandals of two fellow Democrats are hoping to quash the unsavory practice of coercing campaign contributions from special interests while high-stakes bills are pending in the Capitol.
Outgoing leader Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento) and his designated replacement, Sen. Kevin de Len (D-Los Angeles), intend to push for a Senate rule banning peak-session fundraising, according to sources who asked not to be identified because they aren't ready to officially announce the landmark move.
Tentatively, the plan is to black out fundraising starting in late May, when budget negotiations kick into high gear, until the harried end of the legislative session around Labor Day. The ban would be lifted during a four-week vacation recess in July.
"We want to stop people from raising money when they should be focused on the public's business," one source says.
That reason is good enough. But there's also a more important one: PR. The current system portrays an ugly image and emits a rotten stench.
When a legislator leaves a Capitol committee room or house chamber where he has been casting deciding votes with many more to come and walks across the street to a watering hole to hold a fundraiser attended by lobbyists, it just plain stinks. But it has been happening for decades.
August is notorious. There may be a dozen fundraisers scheduled each day the Legislature is in session, acting on hundreds of bills within hours.
It's legal corruption.
By law, legislators and donors cannot discuss legislation while checks are being written. That could be construed as a quid pro quo and bribery. But these are political pros who understand the body language of subtle shakedowns.

Data centers are large facilities filled with servers and other equipment. In the United States, data centers are responsible for more than 2% of the country's electricity usage, according to researchers at Villanova University. If the global cloud computing industry were considered to be a single country, it would be the fifth-largest in the world in terms of energy consumption, according to Ed Turkel of Hewlett-Packard's (HPQ, Fortune 500) Hyperscale Business Unit.
Nearly half of the energy data centers consume goes to cooling the equipment using fans and other methods. That's "just wasteful," said Jill Simmons, director of Seattle's Office of Sustainability and Environment.
That's why the city of Seattle is working on a project to make use of the heat data centers produce. The city plans to route heat from two local data centers to to help warm 10 million square feet of building space in the surrounding area. The project is still in the conceptual phase, but Simmons said the city hopes to have it in motion "within the next year."

The plan is to take the water that cools the data center and pipe it out to buildings nearby. The system will also rely on water heated by energy from sewer lines and electrical substations.
The construction cost will be borne by private utility Corix, which will recover its investment through rates paid by customers over a 30-year period.
"Our hope is that the rates will be competitive with the rates of other utilities, and hopefully better over time," said Christie Baumel, energy policy advisor at Seattle's Office of Sustainability and Environment.
Seattle is following the lead of other cities around the world, including Munich and Vancouver, small portions of which also use heat from data centers.

The new, slimmed-down Minnesota Senate office building project won the OK of the Senate Rules Committee on Monday, clearing the way for construction to potentially begin this summer.
Financing continues to be held up by an outstanding legal challenge, but Monday's approval was the last substantive authorization needed for the project.
"Once the lawsuit's resolved, the building will be ready for construction," said Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, DFL-Cook.
He said he'd like construction to begin before July 1 to reduce the risk of disrupting the related Capitol renovation process.
Minority Republicans have criticized the project as wasteful and insufficiently vetted, and Monday's committee approval was on a partisan 8-5 vote -- Democratic-Farmer-Labor members in favor; Republicans opposed.
In January, the Senate Rules Committee had approved a plan that was attacked as too lavish.
On Friday, the House Rules Committee endorsed a revised plan that increased the space in order to house all 67 senators and their staff members instead of just 44.
But it reduced the overall cost, in part, by cutting an off-site parking ramp and making the on-site ramp user-financed.
The cost to taxpayers dropped from $94 million to $77 million. And it was that new plan that was approved by the Senate Rules Committee on Monday.

The proposal from ONeill Properties Group (OPG) of Upper Merion would include two, six-story office buildings with a separate, six-story parking garage with about 900 parking spaces. A new, 240,000-square-foot building would be connected to an existing, 75,000-square-foot office building.
One of the tenants we are talking to has 1,000 employees, said Brian ONeill, the CEO of OPG. We have a public space that can be used as an amphitheater for this tenant. They want a building that has a large amount of office space on each floor.
This building is all glass that is very light. There is an employee life center on the top floor that has meeting spaces, an employee gym and an outdoor space.
A steel mesh with backlighting will cover the garage buildings exterior. It makes it a sculptural work of art, he said. The building is designed to almost float in the water. This is about bringing as much light into the building as we can.
ONeill did not name the potential corporate tenant for the building and garage.
This is a company highly dependent on technology, he said. It is an international company.
An atrium area between the two office buildings would have a five-story high window wall that could have large glass garage doors that could be opened in good weather.
Board Chairman Richard Barton questioned how the glass connector between the two buildings would be built. Continued...
Engel said the front facade would have architectural breaks every 50 feet to qualify the builder for additional building size.
