Sean Kidd, co-owner, Kidd-Luukko Corp., Worcester

    - April 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Sean Kidd and his business partner Robert Luukko recently moved their roofing business from downtown Worcester to a commercial building they built at 23 North St. in Worcester. The building and warehouse space totals 8,400 square feet. The company employs 16 people, including an architect, and that number can increase to as many as 25 during the building season. The Kidd-Luukko Corp. earns approximately $4 million a year, with about 5 percent to 10 percent of its business in residential construction. The company is working now on the roof of the former Telegram & Gazette Building at 20 Franklin St. in Worcester.

What is your background, both in business and in construction?

"My background is actually in residential construction. I started very young, at a very young age, working for my father and, in turn, for his father, my grandfather. It was a family business, putting in subdivisions and residential homes. My training goes from clearing the land right down to putting paint on the walls at the end of the process, and every step in between. At some point in my mid-20s, I moved over into commercial construction, and was introduced to the differences between the two, between residential and commercial, and the nuances that separate them. And it was at that time that I met my partner, Robert Luukko, and we dabbled in some different commercial stuff for a couple of years. And that's when we decided to form this company and focus specifically on one specific trade that we felt wasn't getting the attention that it deserved. Roofing became kind of an after-thought in a lot of ways to the construction process, when it was, we felt, one of the more important processes."

Considering the amount of snow that fell in Worcester County this year, were there many roof collapses this winter?

"There were a number of roof collapses, similar to the events we had several years ago. Weather patterns are changing. Things are hotter than they've ever been, but they're also colder than they've ever been. And this weather is creating situations on roofs that may have been around for over a hundred years without a problem and now the snow loads are just too heavy and it is a very real problem that people need to address before it causes serious damage."

Tell us about the various kinds of shingles and other roofing materials you use.

"It's very common in the roofing industry that people claim to do all types of roofs, but ultimately, as you get into it, they really only do shingles and maybe a little bit of rubber. Our company actually works with all major roof types, such as asphalt shingles, but we also do a tremendous amount of flat roofing with rubber membranes, PVC membranes. We do a lot of architectural metal, and what we've done is aligned ourselves with the premium manufacturers of these products, and so they train us. They provide support to make sure that we're doing it right and that the customer is protected for the duration of the life of the roof."

As a small business owner, what are some of the challenges you have had to overcome?

"I think anybody who watches the news is perfectly aware that this economy has been terrible and is still terrible. There are a lot of opportunities here and there to run a successful business, but it has been very challenging. Nothing has been easy. I've heard a lot of people say that they're working twice as hard for half the money, but I think that we've made a lot of good decisions, a lot of good investments, and they seem to have paid off."

What got you interested in opening your own roofing company?

Business: AVDomotics offers one-touch, automated home

    - April 6, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Two Flagstaff brothers are helping to design the homes of the future.

Charlie and Andy White, both Flag High graduates and sons of retired Flagstaff astronomer Nat White, own AVDomotics in Sedona. The company specializes in creating home and commercial automation systems that can be controlled from a touch screen or a smart phone.

We can automate nearly anything. It just depends on what the customer wants, Andy White said.

The company has programmed everything from a security gate to the new collaborative classroom in Northern Arizona Universitys School of Communication.

The NAU classroom separates students into groups, Andy White said.

Each student has a computer, which is connected to both the universitys network and to a series of larger monitors in the room. The teacher can call up the computer screen from any computer in the room onto one of the larger screens. The students can also share screens between groups.

The NAU system is also connected to an Apple TV that allows the teacher to pull up movies, music, video and more, from iTunes or Netflicks. The device also allows a teacher or student to connect to the system with a hand-held tablet computer or smartphone and project its screen onto one of the monitors.

As many as 32 devices can connect into the system and four images can be shown at the same time on any of the computers or larger monitors. Students and teachers can also control the system through a series of touch screen tablets at each group table or at the teachers podium.

The brothers bought the company from its previous owner about six or seven years ago, Andy White said.

AVDomotics also built the high-tech theater at the new Grand Canyon National Park Visitor Center. It also designed the lighting for the Hotel Weatherfords annual Pine Cone Drop.
