See better and be seen to avoid injury after daylight saving ends
After daylight saving ends this Sunday, more of us will be coming and going from our homes in the dark which can increase the risk of injury.
Two things you can do to reduce your risk of injury this winter are make sure you have good outdoor lighting, and wear high vis gear if youre out walking or running after dark, says ACCs Head of Insurance Products and Injury Prevention, David Simpson.
More than 6000 Kiwis get injured on paths and driveways around the home each year, and over 13,000 get injured while out jogging.
Mr Simpson says These days, theres lots of gear you can wear to help you be seen at night. Jackets, gloves and tights are all available with sewn-in reflective strips, or you can buy reflective strips and sashes to put over your running kit.
You can also get lightweight head torches, some of which are specially designed for runners.
Mr Simpson says theres a range of outdoor lighting products on the market, from relatively inexpensive solar-powered lighting to more sophisticated, mains-powered options.
A good way to start to make your paths and walkways safer is to identify where outdoor lighting could make a difference.
Grab a torch and go for a walk around your property at night, to identify where lighting could be used to the greatest effect. Think about where you may need a brighter light, or can get away with less.

Today he is the president and founder of Innerfaith Disciple House in Grangerland, however Chris Follett used to be on the fast track to nowhere.
At the age 11, I started smoking cigarettes. By 12 years old, I was drinking alcohol on a daily basis. By the age of 14, I was selling and smoking marijuana and began my life as a career criminal, Follett said. As you can imagine, it wasn't long before I saw jail. I was incarcerated the first time at 17 for possession of drugs.
By the age of 19, he was a resident at the Texas Department of Corrections.
For the next four years, Follett fell deeper and deeper into his alcohol addiction and his life was spiraling out of control, he said. It was when he hit rock bottom and tried to commit suicide that God used various family members to get his attention, he said. He made the choice to totally surrender his life to God, he added.
Innerfaith Disciple House is a residential Christian character-building and discipleship program for men 18 and older. The length of stay is a mandatory minimum of six months.
Innerfaith Disciple House is not a drug and alcohol treatment or rehab program, Follett said. Even though we reach out to men that struggle with drugs and alcohol, it is a discipleship program first and foremost. Men are taught how to walk faithfully with God in the same manner Jesus walked, through surrender, obedience and service, Follett said.
In addition to the three critical Christian character-building concepts of surrender, obedience and service, Innerfaith Disciple House presents biblical teaching that focuses its full attention on three life and death relationships that all men must come to terms with: mans relationship with God, his relationship with himself, and his relationship with others.
When a man has come to the end of himself, when he has hit rock bottom and his spirit is truly broken, whether through drugs alcohol, or lifes other hurts, habits, or hang-ups, he must be completely ready and willing to dedicate at least six months of his immediate future to bury his old, former self and become a new creation through Christ Jesus, Follett said.
The Old Man Graveyard, on the property at Innerfaith Disciple House, is the place where the graduates bury their old life of drugs and alcohol abuse for good, Follett said. To never dig that lifestyle up again and to remind them that they are a new creation in Christ Jesus, have been given a new life, no longer in bondage to drugs and alcohol.
Innerfaith Disciple House is a private non-profit ministry supported through the faithful donations, contributions, and tithes of others.

Innerfaith Disciple House helps men who have hit rock bottom
For 10 years, the Downtown Auburn Business Improvement District has provided a number of services to the city at theyearly tune of $40,000.
These services include garbage pulling, lawn-mowing of city parks and the installation and maintenance of flowers across downtown, said Connie Reilley, executive director of the Downtown BID.
The partnership has been conducted over two-year agreements and Reilley said the Downtown BID once again requires a two-year agreement authorized by the Auburn City Council so these services can continue.
However, the organization may only get a one-year deal this year.
The Auburn City Council will consider renewing the Downtown BID's contract for these aesthetic services on a one-year basis. The previous contract expired in December and the Downtown BID's funds will only last until June.
The renewed deal would call for $40,000 to be supplied to the Downtown BID from April 3, 2014 to June 30, 2015.
"That will do us for this year, but it would put us right back where we are now for 2015," she said.
Reilley said a two-year deal primarily benefits the Downtown BID's flower program. This year, the Downtown BID would have ordered flowers in February to be installed downtown in time for the Memorial Day Parade.
"If the funding stops in June of this year, I wouldn't have the money to water and maintain the flowers for the rest of the fiscal year," she said.
Reilley said such an agreement also provides the organization an additional year before negotiations need to occur again.

Downtown BID seeks two-year deal from Auburn officials toward city maintenance
WEST LIBERTY, Iowa West Liberty has a city manager, but officials are still working on turning that interim position into a permanent one.
Interim City Manager Lawrence McNaul, who is also West Liberty's Police Chief, was picked by the City Council on March 15 for the top administrative post, and the contract was expected to be an agenda item during last Tuesday night's council meeting but Mayor Robert Hartman reported City Attorney William Sueppel hasn't submitted the documents due to illness.
"My goal is to have a contract back next council meeting (April 15) to vote on," Hartman told the council.
The figures show West Liberty will save thousands of dollars by hiring a private contractor to mow Oak Ridge Cemetery, but the figures aren't as clear when it comes to Parks and Recreation property.
The documented cost to the city in mowing the cemetery last year was $27,500. The council Tuesday night approved a $15,400, one-year agreement with Grasshopper Lawn Care of Tipton to provide mowing services in the cemetery. But the council did not accept the $33,460 bid from Grasshopper to mow Parks and Recreation properties because the city's figures aren't as clear.
A memo from McNaul estimates the Parks and Recreation mowing cost for 2013 to range between $33,389 and $46,943. As an example, McNaul explained that a city employee mowing at the Dutton Athletic Complex might be called away to perform maintenance at a ball diamond, and the cost division between tasks hasn't been well maintained. The council accepted McNaul's recommendation for the Parks and Recreation Department to continue mowing for one more year, getting a stronger grasp of time, expenditures, and needs involved.
"We never kept a good record of time spent mowing," McNaul told the council. "It would be my recommendation this year that we keep it with Parks and Recreation."
The Bi-State Regional Commission exists to provide regional planning for the five counties it serves and to provide technical assistance for its members, the group's executive director, Denise Bulat, told the council Tuesday night.
Bi-State, headquartered in Rock Island, serves Muscatine and Scott counties in Iowa and Rock Island, Mercer, and Henry counties in Illinois. Around $380,000 of its $2 million budget comes from dues paid by members; West Liberty's annual dues are $1,080.
Bulat, a Muscatine native, told the council Bi-State was founded in 1965 to do transportation planning but expanded to do economic planning as well. "We prepare a comprehensive economic development plan for the five-county area every five years," she said. "We prepare the West Liberty Fact Sheet. We're working with WeLead (West Liberty Economic Development Agency) to update this sheet."
