GLASGOW, Scotland, April 3 (UPI) -- The Commonwealth Games will open July 23 in Glasgow, Scotland, with a bang, specifically, the demolition of five nearby 30-story apartment towers.
The Olympic-style sports competitions opening ceremony will include the explosive demolition of five of Glasgows six remaining unoccupied Red Road Tower apartments in what organizers call a bold and dramatic statement of intent from a city focused on regeneration and a positive future for its people.
The buildings, once the tallest residential structures in Europe and home to 4,700 people, will fall in 15 seconds after 1,250 kilograms (2,755 pounds) of explosives are detonated, in an event expected to be seen on television by a billion people.
In the televised demolition, Glasgow is proving it is a city that is proud of its history but doesnt stand still, a city that is constantly changing, regenerating, renewing and re-inventing itself, said ceremonies director Eileen Gallagher.
About 900 homes newer the site will be temporarily evacuated during the event.

Demolition gang heralds new era in Walmgate

The old Press buildings are being demolished to make way for student flats
FROM construction to demolition - these pictures show how The Press' headquarters in Walmgate has come full circle in just over a quarter of a century.
Back in the 1980s, the then Yorkshire Evening Press was based in Coney Street alongside the River Ouse, where City Screen is based today.
But the site was outdated, with increasingly difficult access for the newspaper delivery vans, and so it was decided to relocate to a new HQ.
Any temptation to move to an out-of-town site was resisted, in the belief that the local newspaper should remain in the heart of the city - ideally within the city walls.
It so happened that MFI, which in those days was a booming furniture retailer, wanted to move out of its base in Walmgate to a bigger store on Hull Road and The Press acquired the site.
In 1988, York construction firm Shepherd set about building a huge new printworks and office complex, and staff moved in the following year.
In recent years, the changing face of the newspaper industry has left increasing parts of the site unoccupied, particularly after the printworks closed down and printing of The Press was transferred to Bradford.

Home builder Hans Hagen avoided building houses on spec in the housing boom. He saw the market getting overbuilt. And he's more of a custom builder anyway. There's a customer in hand before the first nail is fired.
But rising demand is changing his business. Workers here in Blaine are framing a house that Hagen started to build on spec. He didn't have a buyer lined up. But he knew he'd sell the place quickly. "People come out and say, 'I need something immediately.' Could be transferees or it could be people looking to downsize or whatever," Hagen said. "We're simply filling that niche."
That kind of talk hasn't been heard around here in a while. When the housing market crashed eight years ago, new home construction ground to a halt. Builders who had framed up houses before lining up a buyer got stuck with homes that wouldn't sell. Weak demand for new houses forced many builders out of the business.
Those who survived the worst of it are now enjoying a rebound. Many of the foreclosures that flooded the region in the Great Recession have been wrung from the market. That's put the supply of used homes for sale at a 10-year low, according to the Minneapolis Area Association of Realtors. New home inventories are slim, too. There were 421 finished vacant new homes for sale in the fourth quarter of 2013, less than a third of the supply available during the same period nine years earlier, according to the consulting firm Metrostudy.
That means home buyers are hungry for options, which they can find from builders who've got a few new houses ready to go.
Even just a few years ago, "the market was telling builders, 'Stay away. We don't need your services. We don't need you to build homes,'" said housing economist Elliot Eisenberg. "Times have turned."
Eisenberg said he's glad to see speculative building return. He compares it to the auto industry making cars without having customers lined up in advance. That's largely the home builder model in normal times, he said.
One impediment, Eisenberg notes, could be banks' long memories about unsuccessful loans they made.
When the housing market crashed, builders and developers couldn't find any buyers for the homes they'd built on spec. Banks were left holding the bag.

Tending your numerous social media accounts has very likely left you feeling overwhelmed at some point. Staying connected and being an active network participator requires a lot of time and can easily become an exhausting flurry of updates and posts. If youve ever wondered what it would feel like to step inside that blizzard of data, the following art installation made that happen.

For this years TED conference Vancouver, artists Lauren McCarthy and Kyle McDonald teamed up with experimental marketing agency MKG and Delta Airlines to create an immersive, 360-degree digital infinity of social media called Social Soul. Visitors stepped inside a room covered entirely by mirrors, which reflected their social media stream along with their body. The system then used custom algorithms to analyze visitors Twitter feeds to assign a conference soul mate based on interests. Once the person stepped out of the room, both parties were sent a tweet and encouraged to connect offline.
Social Soul is an immersive digital experience inspired by the question: how does it feel to be inside someone elses social media stream? MKG explained.
