MAHANOY CITY You may think weve heard the last of winters effects on us, but thats not the case in one Schuylkill County community.

A collapsed wall there has caused a road to be closed.

Tons of stone were dumped on Spruce Street in Mahanoy City. PennDOT crews had the job of placing the rock to replace a retaining wall that collapsed. Without the wall, the road could have slid and endangered drivers.

PennDOT blames the damage to the wall, in part, on the freeze and thaw cycle.

That the frost and all the cold weather we had this winter, and the rain was eroding it all these years, it got rotten the concrete and it broke away, explained Ed Sadusky of PennDOT.

Some drivers switched on their turn signals but were surprised they couldnt swing onto Spruce Street.

Its used a lot in our town. We do need it, its a vital road in our town, said Ann Locher of Mahanoy City

Contractors working at a house near the closed road were interrupted from time to time by out-of-towners looking for directions.

People would turn to go to Frackville and they wouldnt know what direction they were going in and they would stop and Id send them either left or right to get back to the top of the mountain or to 54, there to 924, said Peter Bowers.

The mold remediation in a Dekalb County school in Alabama was set to be implemented in summer. A post from whnt.com dated March 31, 2014 related the news. In connection with it, My Cleaning Products gave a tip how the public could kill mold quick.

According to the report, the mold problem in Valley Head School was made known to the County Superintendent Hugh Taylor last November. And to completely resolve it, it detailed that it was initially planned to be treated during the spring break.

However, it was said in the report that after a discussion with the maintenance supervisor and other state organizations, Assistant Superintendent Brian Thomas stated that the remediation was moved to summer. He cited that the rescheduling of the treatment will give them more time to fully address the issue.

Until then, the students were transferred to the mold-free areas in the campus, relayed the report. It added that portable classrooms would be brought in as well to prevent overcrowding.

A mold contamination has been an issue at Valley Head School in Dekalb County in Alabama for the past few months already. But instead of going with the original plan of treating the school on spring, officials re-scheduled its remediation for summer."

"Hugh Taylor, the DeKalb County Superintendent said he became aware of the mold problem last November. And following that, the students in the classrooms with mold were transferred to unaffected areas of the school.

To do that, MCP stated that one would need to prepare a mold removal spray. With it ready, it cited that a person could kill mold personally as soon as its presence is confirmed. And that, it pointed out, prevents the worst effects and costly mold treatment expense.

EAST OROSI, Calif. Jessica Sanchez sits on the edge of her seat in her mothers kitchen, hands resting on her bulging belly. Eight months pregnant, shes excited about the imminent birth of her son. But shes scared too.

A few feet away, her mother, Bertha Dias, scrubs potatoes with water she bought from a vending machine. She wont use the tap water because its contaminated with nitrates.

Every day, Dias, 43, heads to the fields to pick lemons or oranges, lugging a ladder so she can reach the treetops. She often skips lunch to save money for the $17.50 she needs each week to fill jugs with vending-machine water.

Four years ago, the family learned that it had nitrates in its drinking water, which Sanchez drank as a little girl. She started speaking out about her towns toxic water when she discovered that nitrates can cause blue baby syndrome, a potentially fatal blood disorder that cuts off an infants oxygen supply.

Now it really hits me, she said, because now its my baby.

Sanchez, 18, who graduated from high school last year, lives in East Orosi, a square parcel carved out of 160 acres of land in Tulare County surrounded by orchards in the shadow of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. Fewer than 500 people, nearly all Latino, live in this long-neglected town with no sidewalks, street lights, parks or playgrounds. More than half live below the poverty level.

NEW BERN, CRAVEN COUNTY -

Blue lights shine across Eastern Carolina.

The lights illuminating from the bulbs on peoples front porches, and even from organizations like CarolinaEast Medical Center.

Many of these blue lights symbolically represent New Bern Police officer, Alexander Thalmann, who died from injuries he sustained in a weekend shooting. The person accused of shooting him, Byran Stallings, was shot and killed by police on the scene.

The blue lights not only represent the loss of Thalmann but also the loss of all the New Bern Police Officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Prior to Thalmann's passing, two other New Bern Police officers were killed. Carl Mayo J.R. in 1960 who died in an motorcycle accident when responding to a call, and Donald Miller who was shot and killed outside of a hospital in Wilmington in 2001.

CarolinaEast Medical Center Police Chief, Johnny Cahoon, said the hospital is proud to participate, and show their support for all first responders who risk their lives to do their jobs.

"We are illuminating our front entrance in blue in honor of Alexander Thalmann, and to show our solidarity and support for the New Bern Police Department, and all of our emergency personnel and first responders," Cahoon said.

Many homeowners in Eastern Carolina are participating as well. Beth Hicks of Trent Woods is one. Woods has a son who is a firefighter. She says all first responders deserve to be honored and respected.

"Every time one leaves the house for a call you never know if they are going to come back home and so you just send up a prayer for their safety. They are our heroes. And people who go by and see it [the blue light bulb] maybe it will help them think of Officer Thalmann, and to send up a prayer, especially now for his family," Hicks said.
