Mike Trout noticed it right away during batting practice. The center-field wall in Angel Stadium, which was 400 feet away from home plate last season, is now 396 feet. The distance to straight-away left field, which was 365 feet last season, is 347 feet, and right field moved from 365 feet to 348 feet.
"At first, I thought, 'Why did they change it?'" the Angels center fielder said. "Then I thought that maybe they remeasured it in the off-season."
Neither is true. The dimensions of the outfield wall remain exactly the same as they were last season. But the location of several distance markers were moved laterally, to account for the placement of new advertising banners.
That gave some the impression the fences were moved in and caused confusion for fans who noticed the changes during Saturday night's exhibition game against the Dodgers.
"Nothing has changed," said Eric Kay, the team's director of communications. "The positioning of the numbers on the wall has moved the ones in left and right field are tighter to the lines and the placement is reflected in the actual distance in those spots. It's confusing, but it's just a change in angle."
Rehab report
Reliever Dane De La Rosa (forearm strain) threw an inning in minor league games in Arizona on Thursday and Sunday and will throw a simulated game Tuesday. Barring a setback, he could begin a rehabilitation assignment, probably with double-A Arkansas, by this weekend. He hopes to join the Angels by mid-April.
Left-hander Sean Burnett (sore elbow) has thrown three bullpen sessions in the last six days and hopes to face hitters in a simulated game Wednesday before reporting to extended spring-training camp in Arizona. There is no timetable for his return.
"It's frustrating, disappointing, to not be activated for opening day," the reliever said, "but it's going in the right direction."
Left-hander Brian Moran (sore elbow) continues to throw in Arizona but has not yet progressed to a mound.

No, the fences have not been moved in at Angel Stadium. (Kelvin Kuo / Associated Press)

It might seem a little easier to hit a home run in Angel Stadium this season than it did in 2013, but it wont be.
The dimensions of the outfield wall remain exactly the same as last season. But the team has moved the location of several distance markers on the wall laterally, giving some the impression that the fences were moved in and causing confusion for fans who noticed the changes during Saturday nights exhibition game against the Dodgers.
For instance, the distance marker in straight-away left field went from 365 feet in 2013 to 347 feet this season. The marker in straight-away right field went from 365 feet to 348 feet, and the one in center field went from 400 feet to 396 feet.
But nothing has changed, said Eric Kay, the teams director of communications. The positioning of the numbers on the wall have moved the ones in left and right field are tighter to the lines and the placement is reflected in the actual distance in those spots. Its confusing, but its just a change in angle.
Perhaps the new distance markers will give hitters some kind of psychological boost. Angel Stadium is known as a pitchers park, and hitters often complain about the marine layer that seems to knock down long drives during night games early and late in the season.
Teams combined to hit 157 home runs in Angel Stadium last season, an average of 1.94 a game, which ranked ninth among American League parks.

NEW YORK -- We've got Bryce Harper, Derek Jeter, Giancarlo Stanton and David Ortiz. We've got Fat Joe, Sway, Melanie Iglesias and Chris Distefano. Put them together, and you have the ingredients for a new kind of sports-culture show that premieres on MTV2 at 11 p.m. ET tonight.
"Off the Bat from MLB Fan Cave" is executive produced by Ortiz, the 2013 World Series MVP from the Red Sox. Included in the first half-hour episode is a segment in which Iglesias, the "Girl Code" star, goes with Stanton to a junkyard for a home run demolition derby. Distefano visits retirees to get advice for Jeter, who will be making his final Opening Day start on the night of this premiere.
Harper is the first studio guest on the show, which uses the MLB Fan Cave in Manhattan as a studio. He spent a couple of hours on Tuesday taping for the show. In one segment called "Cutting Off," contestants sit in barber chairs and have their heads shaved if they don't answer Harper trivia correctly. They greatly underestimate his career hit total to date, and he corrects them with the right answer of "261."
"I think baseball's very excited to be able to partner with MTV and see that other side of a lot of the players," Harper said. "It's a lot of fun, and I'm excited to be with a lot of celebrities and do certain things within the game of baseball."
Harper, 21, said it is important that baseball finds new ways to reach his generation of fans.
"It's a lot different now. I think Facebook, Twitter, social media is huge," he said. "Being able to enjoy it with the fans, fans make this game, being able to enjoy that with them, they see your personalities, see certain things. I think it's good for the game. I'm excited, and I think a lot of guys are."
Harper and the Nationals are 1-0 after their 9-7 victory in 10 innings over the Mets on Opening Day. He said this Nationals team is different than the ones before: "Being able to have a shot at a World Series title, it's going to be a lot of fun this year. I think a lot of guys are into what we're doing. One through nine, our lineup is incredible. One through five, our staff is great. Our bullpen is unbelievable. We just have to go out there and play the game we know how to play, and we'll see where we're at by the end."
In the meantime, you can expect to see a lot more of Harper off the field, not only in "Off the Bat," but in an upcoming Gatorade campaign that relaunches its "Fierce" products. He just joined the Gatorade roster of athletes, and his new campaign starts on April 10.
"I'm very excited to be able to partner up with Gatorade, and being able to be part of a company I have been [using] my whole life," Harper said. "I've been able to grow up with Gatorade and drink that before games and during games, and it is something I want to do now. Being able to get with a company that is so into sports and baseball, and just going full force into everything, is a lot of fun.
"The Fierce campaign is coming back, and a lot of people are excited about that, especially me, because I love all the Fierce products. ... All their products are unbelievable, all the nutritional things they need to put into it [that] they do. It's exciting being able to partner with the company."

VIEW of Mount Banahaw, a protected area that continues to be under threat from intrusion and poaching DELFIN T. MALLARI JR./INQUIRER SOUTHERN LUZON
LUCENA CITY, PhilippinesThe theft of signs and fences that are supposed to help protect Mount Banahaw from poachers and intruders is keeping the job of forest guards very difficult.
Warning signs and advisories in strategic areas on the mountain would disappear as soon as these were put up, according to officials.
Steel wires that serve as a fence to mark prohibited areas are stolen.
Salud Pangan, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) park superintendent, said the theft of signs and steel fences was a common occurrence on Banahaw, a mountain still recuperating from years of destructive human activity.
To add to the frustration of forest guards in charge of keeping watch over Banahaw, the agency in charge of protected areasthe Protected Area Management Board (PAMB)barely has funds.
The PAMB has a P5 share from every P20 entrance fee that DENR guards collect from mountain visitors. The amount has not changed since 2004.
According to Pangan, the total PAMB share from the Integrated Protected Area Fund has reached P1.9 million. The funds are, however, not being released yet by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
We need the money very badly, Pangan said.
The disappearance of the signs and fence in Banahaw is causing confusion among mountaineers, pilgrims and visitors who are given access to the mountain, Pangan said.

Grand National. Click here to bet.
For every Ruby Walsh and Richard Dunwoody, who have both won the race twice with a completion record way above the norm, there is a John Francome or Peter Scudamore, multiple champion jockeys who failed to record a success.
Even Tony McCoy needed 15 attempts before Don't Push It won in 2010, so Sam Waley-Cohen must be doing something right.
Still very much a Corinthian, Waley-Cohen's record over the spruce fences is nothing short of phenomenal. He won the Fox Hunters' back-to-back in 2005 and 2006 on Katarino, trained by his father, Robert, and finished second on the same horse in 2008.
Given they were the only three runs the horse had in that four-year period it is even more meritorious.
In 2006 he pulled of a notable double by also winning the Topham Chase, another run over the National fences, on Liberthine. At the time Waley-Cohen had ridden over the National fences five times and won on three occasions.
Liberthine returned to Aintree a year later and finished fifth in the National itself.
More recently his Grand National ride has been the Martin Lynch-trained Oscar Time, runner-up in 2011 and fourth 12 months ago.
Perhaps we should not be surprised Waley-Cohen does so well at Aintree - in 166 runnings of the National the great race has been won 41 times by an amateur.
This year Waley-Cohen is riding the Nicky Henderson-trained Long Run, on whom he made history by winning two King Georges and a Gold Cup.

With the sun shining Saturday, people showed up in droves to the 11th annul SpringFest in Lake Villa as if to cast off spring fever and renew themselves.
The two-day show, sponsored by the Lindenhurst-Lake Villa Chamber of Commerce, had nearly everything for the rite of spring: house cleaning, maybe a new furnace after the old one had all but conked out, patching up a pock-marked driveway or getting it repaved, and perhaps a home equity line of credit to pay for home improvements.
This is a great community event. It brings people out, said Connie Meadie, executive director of the 240-member chamber of commerce.
We have 83 exhibitors this year. They offer to help whatever people want to do, she added, expressing hope this years attendance record would exceed last years 3,000.
Lakes Community High School in Lake Villa, where the show was held, was jammed with people Saturday. The mood was upbeat and people were smiling. Not just for adults, the show had children in mind by entertaining them with balloon-making, stilt-walking and face painting, among others. A Sunday highlight was the all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast sponsored by the Lions Club.
Its so good, so delicious, said an appreciative Ron Waltz as he sampled candies from Peters Amish Chocolate of Wilmot, Wis.

PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The Maryland State Highway Administration says single lane closures are likely as crews resurface a 1.6 mile section of MD 675 (Somerset Avenue) in Princess Anne.
The $260,000 resurfacing project begins Tuesday, April 1. It is scheduled to be complete by mid-April, weather permitting.
The milling work followed by paving will start at the southern limit of MD 675 where the highway merges with US 13 and continue northward to Broad Street. The project is part of an areawide contract awarded to American Infrastructure, Inc. of Fallston.
Motorists should expect single lane closures Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. THE SHA said this type of construction can also be noisy and disruptive. Crews will use cones and barrels together with a flagging operation to guide traffic through the work zone. They will also maintain driveway and parking access during construction.
