Kiama councillors have deferred adopting a new policy on tree preservation and management to allow further investigation into safety issues and tree species.
Kiama council has long been known for its strict stance on tree removal, however last year councillors voted against two staff recommendations to keep a Norfolk Island pine in Pheasant Point Drive and a fig tree in Bong Bong Street, moves described as a "turning point" for the council.
Councillors voted to defer adopting a new tree policy until May.
Cr Dennis Seage said one of the major problems with trees in Kiama was ageing gum trees and there was no mention of this in the draft policy.
"We need to document that common sense should prevail when it came to safety for residents," Cr Seage said.
"There is a perception that if an arborist or tree preservation person attends for a native tree it is a foregone conclusion the application for removal will be refused."
Cr Warren Steel asked for the council to investigate casuarina trees.
"For a matter of interest casuarinas are completely banned in the state of Florida ... they are ahead of us," Cr Steel said.
In a high-profile court case in 2002 Cr Steel was fined $5000 after he chopped down three casuarina trees and one eucalyptus tree at Bombo.

As cold as it got this winter in the Chicago area, it probably did little harm to a tree-killing bug that is costing some communities millions of dollars.
Some people who are on the front lines of the battle against the emerald ash borer had hoped the third-coldest winter on record might have been their ally.
In Oak Lawn, where nearly 1,500 ash trees ultimately will be removed because of the beetle infestation, ash borer larvae still were thriving despite a season that had its share of below-zero temperatures.
Matt Basile, the villages forester, recently checked some ash trees in his community and didnt see any evidence of the cold affecting the bugs.
I was hoping the cold would kill some of them and maybe buy us some time, he said Thursday. It doesnt seem like it made much of an impact, from what Ive seen.
First confirmed in Illinois more than seven years ago, the tiny green beetle has been blamed for killing ash trees throughout the Chicago area. Some Southland communities, such as Tinley Park and Orland Park, expect to spend millions of dollars in the coming years removing thousands of infested trees and replacing them.

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- Several East Bay cities appear to have won their battle to stop PG&E from cutting down thousands of trees.
The utility company says it needs to remove all obstructions to nearly 7,000 miles of gas lines from Bakersfield to Eureka. The city of Walnut Creek is leading the local fight.
It may only be a temporary reprieve, but the mayor of Walnut Creek launched a petition drive to stop PG&E from removing trees and it appears for now, PG&E got the message.
Walnut Creek Mayor Kristina Lawson led the effort by creating a Change.org petition, when she learned what PG&E had in mind for her city -- the removal of 735 trees from public and private property.
As part of its $500 million Pipeline Pathways program, PG&E wants to clear obstructions from more than 6,700 miles of pipeline in Northern California. It's a safety project that grew out of San Bruno pipeline disaster in 2010.
In some places, the tree removal has already happened. Earlier this month, PG&E took out a line of trees along San Lorenzo's Duck Pond Park.
In Concord, the trees next to Len Hester Park would be among more than 700 chopped down in Mayor Tim Grayson's city.
"They have said that their project pre-empts all local ordinances, which pretty much puts our trees and especially our heritage trees in danger of their pathway," said Grayson.
In deciding to halt the program at least temporarily, PG&E spokesman Debbie Felix told ABC7 News, "We share the cities' deep appreciation for trees. They've raised a number of issues and we are listening."
Without the community opposition, the tree removal would have started in Walnut Creek in May.

The Giroud Tree and Lawn bucket truck recently rolled into the parking lot at Glenside Library for Big Truck Day. Joining 8 other work trucks, Giroud volunteers, Joe Hock, Matt Giroud and Taylor Klein showed children how the bucket truck works and what kinds of tree service jobs Giroud Tree and Lawn does with it.
It was a great day, says Matt Giroud, Giroud Tree and Lawn Crew Leader. The kids were so excited to learn about the truck, see how it works and actually get a view from the drivers seat.
In addition to Giroud Tree and Lawns bucket truck, children were able to get hands-on tours of Cheltenham Townships recycling truck, backhoe and police SWAT vehicle, Glenside Volunteer Fire Companys truck, AAAs tow truck, JDM Materials cement mixer, Giant Foods Peapod truck, and the Montgomery-Norristown Librarys bookmobile.
This was our second year for Big Truck Day and it was a great success, says Stephanie Campbell, Head Librarian at Glenside Library in Glenside PA. Over 300 parents and kids enjoyed getting a close-up view of the trucks that do all sorts of important jobs.
